New Mexican Eats
My friend and I are driving around New Mexico for a week in June.
Any recommendations for food (low / high) we want to make sure we don't go see a whole bunch of stuff but only eat Lara bars all week.

If it was me, I'd spend the week in search of the perfect chili relleno. Something like this. http://tinyurl.com/6ogd3a

Will you be in Albuquerque? You MUST eat at the Frontier. Cheap, fast, and outta control.
Church St. Cafe in Old Town, also nice. Sit on the patio and relax with a coffee and some huevos rancheros.
Try Route 66 Cafe and Barelas in the Valley.
Oh, man. So many good places!

Everything in New Mexico has green chiles in it yum! Look for some roadside stop to bring home pineapple green chile preserves or other weird southwestern concoctions.

Santa Fe: Tomasitas (green chile chicken enchiladas w/blue corn tortillas),
The Shed (red chile cheese enchiladas)
Las Cruces & Deming: Si Si Senor
Canutillo: The Little Diner (truly one of the great secret Texmex restaurants in the country)
El Paso: Jurado's, Carnitas, El Malenchi, Julio's

Albuquerque (where I live): Go to Mary and Tito's on 4th Street north of Menaul for authentic New Mexican family cooking served by the family. It is in a sort of industrial area and only serves dinner very early. I think they may close at 6:00 PM. It looks like nothing but park in back and give it a try.
Also, Sophia's further north of Fourth is great but not necessarily so New Mexican. Neither is pricey.
Look at nmgastronome.com. It is a beautiful site and he has never led me astray as long as I go for scores 20 or over.
Don't be afraid to try the little places, especially if they are surrounded by lots of cars. Big places with lots of cars may or may not be so great.
Enjoy. Eary June is beautiful summer weather here.

@Tokyorosa: I think you mean the Barelas Coffee House on south
Fourth Street. Yep, a good one.

Cafe Pasquale in Santa Fe is one of my all-time favorite restaurants, for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Try to get your hands on some Hatch green chiles. They make the best green chile sauce and will be dirt cheap if you can get them in NM.

*If* you end up near El Paso and are a steak fan, take the extra hour to drive to Fabens and go to Cattleman's. So good.

Thank you so much for the gastronome site...it makes me salivate. We're hoping for a road trip from MO to Tucson in the autumn, preferably during chile-roasting time, and this will be a lot of help.

Try the M&J Sanitary Tortilla Factory in Albuquerque.
Although it doesn't sound appetizing, it is great.

@lemons: The chile roasters usually start just before Labor Day and go through September. They set up in grocery store parking lots. It smells so good on those first mildly cool days. I associate that fragrance with switching back to hot coffee from iced.
If you come in early October you will still find some weekend roasters if it's been a good season. (You know they say farming is gambling with Mother Nature!) Late season roasters often have some red in the mix. Even tastier in my book.
Balloon Fiesta is October 4 - 12 this year. Either enjoy it -- it's beautiful -- or stay away from Albuquerque. Hotels will be jammed and the traffic awful.

@BlueIris: Definitely not aiming at balloon fiesta; I prefer to generate my own hot air, or let the chile roasters do it! So looking forward...

In Santa Fe -
Tecolote Cafe is possibly my favorite breakfast place ever, eggs with bacon smothered in green and red chile, oh god yes.
La Choza is also a personal favorite, which I usually choose over Tomasita's when visiting friends there.
Horseman's Haven - I've never managed to go (closed for renovations, etc...) but everyone I know there says they have some seriously hot green chile.
Also, a word of advice - try both the red and green chile individually but try asking for "christmas" which is both on your meal. it's a pretty damn good flavor combination as well.
branny at 12:16PM on 05/19/08
@Branny- I've been to Horseman's Haven(on Cerillos Rd in Santa Fe) their green chile is HOT!!! I can usually stand the heat.. but the mild is even pretty scorchy! But we all loved it. (Nearby on Cerrillos is the Jackalope Market- lots of fun southwest shopping to be had here.
Off topic tip- if you are in Santa Fe the Georgia OKeefe Museum is free on Fri. nights- check their website for details.
If you see a handwritten roadside sign for frybread- don't be shy- GO GET SOME! Yum!
