New grill

My husband and I bought a new grill the other day. It will arrive on June 11, as it is huge, built into an island, and has to be delivered. I am eagerly awaiting its arrival. So here is my quandry: what to cook on it first? Should it be steaks, seafood, or something else? Any suggestions? What would you grill first?

Something expendable. I'm assuming you've never used it before.

Grab some chix parts (legs, breast, thigh), maybe a couple of burgers, and start slow. Once you get the feel of it, you can hoist a couple of excellent steaks on it or seafood.

@chiff - HaHaHa! Were you watching me last summer when I used my new grill for the first time? It was quite the experience. I even scorched my hair.

@izatryl - OMG! That sounds harrowing! Glad you have a sense of humor about it.

Truth be told, I learned a long time ago not to cook anything really expensive on or with something brand new. It's always good to "break it in" with something you won't mind losing. I can't see tossing 2 steaks totaling $50 on a brand new grill when they may turn into cinders. I'm ever so grateful that when I got my Cuisinart 22 years ago, someone suggested I buy a bag of carrots and a couple of onions and "play."

Maybe grill cheapie food like chix and burgers (feed it to the kids or keep it for later in the week) and if that works, immediately cook your steaks or more expensive items for the evening's meal?

These suggestions are so practical they make me sad! I can't help myself and would go crazy right off the bat...but I've always been a leap-first kind of girl.

Well I did go crazy! I bought 11 count shrimp (lots of it too) covered the entire grill surface. I was so thrilled and proud of my choice. I have bangs now. ;-D

Chiff is giving great advice. Do the chix and burgers and dogs. Get a feel for how hot it gets.

When hubby brought his behemoth of a grill home he also picked up two prime NY strips. Um, so it wasn't one of his proudest grilling moments. Anywho, the burgers fared much better. sort of. I am happy to report that his steaks are perfectly med rare nowadays and you shoulda seen the bratwurst perfection last week.

I'd go with skirt steaks, silver-dollar mushrooms, pizza doughs and chimichurri.

@all.......periodically, check the connection where the gas enters the grill. I had my grill on my deck just slightly pulled away from the house and had just started to pre-heat it. Luckily, my back door is all glass. I looked out and noticed flames UNDER the grill, and as my mind was processing that, they grew up and over and reached the first floor roof. I grabbed the phone on my way out and called 911. All of the knobs had melted. I couldn't get the knob on top of the tank to move. Talk about panic - I was afraid the tank would explode and there goes me and my house. Long story short, I did finally manage to turn the tank off (just under the flames) and didn't use a gas grill for many years after that. Maintenance is crucial!
