meals for a new 1st time mom

I became a grandmother over the weekend, folks - a big 10 lb, 3 oz baby girl! I want to make some easy and filling meals to send up to my son and DIL (who's recovering form a c-section), but need to make things that are 1. healthy and substantial, 2. easy transport & cleanup, and 3. not spicy as she's nursing the baby. Also, they're not big on pasta, but are meat lovers.

I am too excited to think straight and have brain freeze. Any ideas out there? What did you appreciate when you were recovering from surgery?

How about individual chicken pot pies, homemade? You can make alot, and they can freeze them. Make some chicken breasts, and sides(mashed potatoes, cousous, rice, vegetables) put them in individual aluninum containers, so they can be mixed and matched, put on a plate, and microwaved. Meatloaf or meatballs are also portable and will keep well. Soup(lentil, chicken, etc.) can be put into containers, and transported. Congratulations!

Roast chicken or turkey, meatloaf and ham provide so many easy meals and sandwiches, and even breakfast meat. Pot Roast with veggies & potatoes. Breakfast foods for sleepy new parents, like muffins, coffee cake, pancakes, waffles, french toast and maybe berries and maple syrup. Roast a lb. of bacon - that is easily reheated. Quiche and frittata
are also easily reheated. Bring the soups already frozen - no spill worries! A basket of fruit and a couple of salads and they're set for weeks!

Congrats on being a Grandmother!!!! Your life will never be the same. I know and I'm so happy for you and them.

Congratulations! That's wonderful!

Since she's nursing and had a C-section, steer clear of broccoli, cauliflower and other gas-producing veggies for a while. Give their stomachs time to settle down from the surgery and stress of birth. Stick with more starchy and filling veggies, dark green leafy salads like fresh spinach and romaine, plus green beans and carrots. Give the veggies a quick steam, then they can be reheated without getting soggy.

Check the meat counter for flat-iron steaks. They can be grilled, pre-sliced at an angle across the grain, and refrigerated. They can be reheated for a main meal or a steak sandwich. They are so tender and flavorful. They're not too expensive right now, since it's a relatively new cut of meat.

"The flat iron steak is a cut of steak from the shoulder of a steer. The design of the cut of steak was created by researchers at the University of Florida and University of Nebraska during the course of a study of undervalued cuts of beef. The study also found that this specific cut is the second most tender cut of beef, after the tenderloin."

Chicken or turkey salad is great to keep in the fridge for a quick meal. Chili freezes well; just go easy on the beans and spice. Make it a little sweeter instead of hotter.

Many congratulations! I hope all are doing well.

I'd do a lasagna for starters. If she doesn't use it right away it can be frozen.

To be honest, I'd try to do something with fresh veggies - I remember my c-section and what I wanted was something to cleanse my insides after that hospital stay. A nice stir fry with chicken and a light sauce.

With a beautiful baby of the size you've discribed, I'd find out what they've been eating and stay the course. It seems to have been working very well! Congratulations G-Ma...
