Mango allergy?

After having my face break out into a rash, a doctor determined that I am probably suffering from a sudden allergy to mangos as I eat one per day and probably touched the peel, and then touched my face, causing hives to develop. Apparently the peel carries oils similar to those in poison ivy. Has anyone experienced a mango allergy or a reaction to touching the skin? If so, is there any way around it or should I just stay as far away from mangos as possible?

my grandmother had a mango tree in her yard in florida, and when i was a kid, my cousins and i used to eat the heck out of some mango. however, my cousins used to get that same rash around their mouths. unfortunately, you may have to start wearing gloves while cutting it or have someone cut it for you.

My boyfriend has the same allergy- it's thankfully just the skin of the mango though. Perhaps you can relegate the mango peeling to someone else?

I could make my boyfriend peel the mango, but what if the oil gets on the flesh? What if it stays on his hands and then he touches my face? I'm just concerned now because hives on your face aren't fun! :)

My aunt has this sort of thing happen to her every time she eats mango, not the hives but the rash around the mouth.
Just to put it out there, last year I broke out in a skin rash TWICE after eating peaches from my local grocer, 2 seperate occasions, 2 different types off peaches . My bf had an allergic reaction to apricots twice last summer, also from a local grocer. Make sure to wash every fruit and veg really well no matter if eating the skin or not, cause the pesticides that grocers use are so thick and potent that they will remain on the food and on our hands and we spread it allover the place, I even make sure to always wash my hands after I come home from buying groceries...
When I was 20 I had an allergic reaction to something that I ate, it started of with a rash, proceeded by fever, hives, difficulty breathing. My parents had to take me to the emergency room cause me fever was so high and I was having so much trouble breathing. To this day I think it was the purple pepper my mom put in the salad the night before. I have seen purple peppers at the farmers markets every once in awhile, but have vowed never to eat one again. I hope that your allergy doesn't send you to the hospital, and if you have a feeling that it one day might, I would say just forget about the mangoes. There is so much other delicious fruit out there.

@allakarasik, thanks for the input - that's really strange about the fruit from your grocer - you just know it couldn't have been a coincidence. I always rinse my fruit before I eat it, but I don't use fruit washing soap, and that means that pesticide certainly could have remained. I don't think it's worth it to risk another reaction, even though mango is my favorite food in the world. I'm just glad I didn't have to go to the hospital.

first time i have heard of this... maybe people from the tropics don't develop allergies from indigenous fruits. Hope you feel better and find a way to continue to enjoy mangoes.

I would be so sad if I suddenly became allergic to mangos. Maybe they make a shot for that?

Huh, wierd. I found out if i'm cutting/prepping mangos and i pick the rind up to eat the mango off it, I break out in a rash around my mouth. Almost feels burned (high acid?). If i skip the knawing it off the rind bit and use a fork to eat just the flesh, I'm fine.

When I was a child and we went to Mexico to visit relatives, I always developed a rash around my lips. Everyone there has mango forks to spear the fruit on the side after it has been peeled, and the delicious fruit is eaten that way, usually with lots of juice getting all over one's mouth.

Finally decided that it was probably the mangoes, so when we went to the US we bought one, and I ate it and I developed the rash. I didn't eat another mango until about 20 years later. I was living in S. Florida and got the bright idea to bring some mangoes home from work. I thought perhaps I had outgrown the allergy. So many people there have the trees in their yards that they can't even give them away fast enough.

I decided to make a mango milk shake. I peeled it and got juice all over my hands and some of it splashed a bit on my knees because I was wearing shorts.

Sorry for getting into intimate details but this is important. I washed my hands what I thought was thoroughly, but I guess it was not. I went to the bathroom. Let's just say that the part of the penis exposed by circumcision developed a horrible rash. I suppose this could be an argument against circumcision.

So I had a bad rash here and there wherever the juice i.e. oils touched. I was vomiting and had diarrhea very bad. I did not seek medical treatment, but perhaps I should have.

So what brings us to June 8, 20008? I bought some yoghurt and didn't pay attention that it was mango. It had small, bite-size pieces and I tasted that old delicious but almost deadly flavor.

I am in a hotel room right now in Haifa, Israel, resting, taking fluids and trying to read up more on the subject. I went downstairs a few hours ago and saw the wonderful Israeli breakfast spread before me, and I could only have some green tea and plain joghurt until this nausea passes.I always thought I was good about asking if there were mangoes in a fruit salad, etc., but I got lax just buying a yoghurt.

Mango allergy can kill. Be very careful. Treat it just as serious as a penicillin allergy.

Hi!

I also have an allergy with mangoes just recently. I always have this allergy since birth. I just dont understand why there are some mangoes that does not cause any allergic reaction to me. I often eat ripe mangoes but, when I ate green mangoes, I started to have an itchy red spots all over my body. It will start on my palm, scalp, middle of my arm and 1 hour later, my whole body will have thesame effect. even my inner body will feel an itch. sometimes I collapsed and have hard breathing. and also cough and runny nose. Sometimes, It lasted for a week. but if I only took one mango, It will only last for one day. oh, 4 hour of itchyness until it reaches or covers the whole body. but if it already covered my whole body, it will just subside and eventually the itchy feeling will also subside. I am taking anti-histamine whenever I experience this.

As of now, I am looking for a way how can I remove this? so that I can enjoy eating mangoes. by the way, it is not just mangoes, It also occure when I ate tamarind, Averrhoa Bilimbi(bilimbi), strawberries, lemon, calamansi… I think all of sour fruits. and even a teaspon venigar (because I tried it if I reacts to venigar if I swallowed).

Hope someone can help me.

I too have a mango allergy. It all started about 15 years ago, my father rec'd a gift of a bag of mangos from a friend that returned from a trip to Florida. No one else in the family cared for them, I ate them all. About two weeks later I started getting itchy red bumps, first around my lips, then from the corners of my eyes down my neck, also in my mouth. Went to the doctor, got an Rx for white salve and was told to take Benadryl, I was "cured". A few weeks later, I bought a mango, one bite and my lips turned numb! The mystery was solved, the allergy was my new favorite fruit. About 5 years later I was at a wedding reception that had mango on the fruit/cheese spread, I took one bite (against the advise of my husband), numb lips. If I eat two slices I get a thin white line around my numb lips, a couple hours later I am back to normal. I tried mango once more time about five years ago, same reaction. Today I bought another mango, I ate about 1/4 of it, no reaction, I have Benadryl on hand, just incase, I hope I am cured!

Yup! my husband is super super super allergic to poison ivy. He peeled a few Mangoes one night... didn't wash hands very well, and yes, he too had mango rash on his "nether regions." Had to get some steroids to calm the whole thing down.
However, he can EAT mangos. Just not peel them. I do that.

We have just discovered that our 5 yrs old baby girl has the same symptoms, when she have mango slices, dried or mango juice its fine, but we noticed that from after her first timing eating it as child with her hands her face just BURST into a RASH and swelling in the same time but no signs on her body, we treated her and since then we thought it was the mango it self but after several trials of eating them and drinking the juice i thought about touching the peel after yesterdays indecent, she had it again after she just touched the mango it self not peeled she didn't even eat it that day.

so from now on we will peel it for her teach her how to do it in the future also. cleaning your hands also would be better before you lay it out to the child or to whom you love.

this Blog helped me to understand whats going on & i loved to share my experience also.

Regards to all
