Long weekend in New Orleans...

Hi all

My husband and I are planning a long weekend trip to New Orleans for our 1 year anniversary and I was looking for some advice.

I know we need to go to Willie Mae's and Cochon but anybody got some other good places for us?

Also, will we need a car to hit all the spots we want to?

Thanks for any advice! It's the first time to NOLA for both of us.

Any good lodging recommendations will be very very welcome too!

First of all, where are you staying? I'd advise you to check out the NOLA chowhound board...there are a lot of good suggestions there. I personally love Herbsaint; the chef is the same as Cochon. I do love Cochon as well. It is in the warehouse district, which is walkable from the quarter...about a 15 min walk. Willie Mae's isn't walkable and would need a car and go when they open at 11:00 am. I love Surrey's for Breakfast. It is in the lower garden district. Very much a casual place and cash only.

We haven't booked a place yet but are deciding b/w

Place d'Armes Hotel
Drury Inn
Ramada

Any opinions of those place?

All is the quarter I'm assuming??? I don't have any suggestions on any of those, but my brother swears by the Queen and Crescent hotel which is a little bit outside the quarter. He likes the prices as well as the atmosphere. Since I live here, I really don't know much about the hotels. Sorry.

Cafe du Monde for Beignets (a must even if you don't like beinets).
Central Grocery for good parm and balsamic (wrap it and takeit home with you if you can, or ship it to yourself).
Antione's on Bourbon for the history. Many of the famous NO dishes were perfected there.
Commander's Palace in the Garden District.
Tee Eva's (a little walk-up) in the Garden District that has pies and pralines.
Go pay your respects to Marie Laveau in St. Louis #1 Cemetery, but beware of the current residents (several homeless people use it as a sleeping place). Use extreme care when walking under bridges (Especially the I-10 overpass at the Convention Center) and past alcoves, as they are frequently used by the homeless as well due to the city's lack of rescue missions and homeless shelters.

Just a note, Tee Eva's is not in the Garden District. It is uptown/Napolean area.

Eat at The Delachaise

Around when are you planning on coming? There's always some sort of festival going on and many are centered around food, so knowing a date would help. For instance, June 13 - 15 is the creole tomato festival and the seafood festival is June 7-8.

I second many of the recommendations above. I would also like to add in MiLa, a newish restaurant located in the CBD. (milaneworleans.com) It's southern and local classics made with locally sourced fare.

Also, you might want to check out Bacchanal. (bacchanalwine.com). It's a great wine shop in the Bywater with a courtyard out back. On Sunday afternoons, there's a local chef serving up delicious food for ridiculously cheap prices. And you can just buy a bottle or two of wine and get some glasses from inside. It's a great way to wrap up a weekend.

The last time we were there, we went to Bayona, Susan Spicer chef-owner, and had a very memorable meal.
We ate at many of the "must-trys" and we enjoyed the ambience and the food here the most. And the servers and hostesses were incredibly friendly and happy to recommend some other "must-try" places.
So charming.

We learned not to stay in the Quarter if you want to actually sleep. We were there recently for Jazzfest and had a spectacular meal at NOLA, Emeril's French Quarter restaurant. I am not sure if Stella's is still there or still as awesome, but just before Katrina we had a fabulous dinner there.
