Fresh whole wasabi root, kaffir limes in NYC?

Does anyone know where to get them?

14 Comments:

I think you can get Kaffir lime at some places in Chinatown but I don't know of specific places. That probably wasn't too helpful...sorry!

I've seen whole wasabi root at Garden of Eden in Union Square.

Good luck on your search!

Hi Jacquie, I was just in Chinatown, went to a couple places that are famous for Thai and Indonesian ingredients(the one on Bayard, and one on Moscoe,) but neither had the kaffir lime. They occasionally get the leaves but didn't have them right now. They said I could go out to Elmhurst to look for them there, but damn, that's far away... I'm hoping to find them in Manhattan.

Wasabi at Garden of Eden? I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

I visit the store on Moscoe Street for my Thai ingredients but am generally looking for kaffir lime leaves and not the actual limes. What is it you're trying to prepare?

I have a cookbook from an awesome French chef called William Ledeuil whose cuisine is entirely focused around Asian aromatics. Just assembling my war chest so as to explore his recipes. Got my galanga, krachai, curcuma, lemongrass today. Still need kaffir limes, leaves, and wasabi...

The place on Bayard said they would have some leaves in about a month. (I think, the guy was very surly and barely comprehensible.) The place on Moscoe said they had the powder, and would maybe have leaves at some point but were not very specific, and they said I might have better luck in QNS. I am looking into buying my own tree.

I've seen wasabi at Sunrise Market in SoHo. They always seem to have it tucked into their fresh vegetable selection.

I was out today looking for kaffir lime leaves but didn't find any. Tomorrow I'm checking Kalustyan's at Lex & 26th, but they don't have much in the way of fresh produce, and I fear the limes are out of season right now.

If you know anyone who works in a restaurant, they can special-order some in from Sid Wainer & Son, a wholesale produce distributer.

If you can't find it try

Pacific Farms does a nice job. I ordered it and the rhizome came with a little grater. Very nice

This is a good site, too. I've used it for Thai curry paste and produce. Very dependable.

Thanks everyone!

This is a great website that offer the real plant and real wasabi powder.

A site I use a lot is food411.com - I have actually purchase both fresh wasabi and kaffir lime from resources on this site.

Yeah, the Thai grocery store on Mosco hasn't had Kaffir lime leaves the past two times I've gone... however, I did find some this past weekend at the Thai/Indonesian/Malaysian(?) grocery store around the corner, on Mulberry btw. Mosco & Bayard (West side of the Street). Just ask the guys in front, and they have them stored in fridges behind all the fresh fruit & veggies. $3 for a small bag.

Yeah as everyone else said, I've seen both the leaves and the actual limes at Bangkok Center Grocery (104 Mosco St.).

I've seen fresh wasabi at Mitsuwa Marketplace (595 River Rd, Edgewater, NJ). Its about $100 per pound there for the fresh root. I've never bought it, because I can't afford it.

The place on 104 Mosco street is where I went, they didn't have any, and said they never do, all they had was the powder. Are you sure that's where you saw them? Zach, thanks for the tip, I'll try the one on Mulberry.

Yeah, it was in the far cooler on the left side of the store (if you are looking in from the entrance). Granted, this was about a year ago, but they also say they get them in often on their website: http://thai-grocery.com/
