Foodie Movies?

I'm having a foodie movie party and was wondering what everyone's favorite food related films were.

25 Comments:

Chocolat is great. I've always wanted to recreate the dishes she makes!

Babbate's Feast
Big Night
Godfather 1
Eat Drink Man Woman
Ratatouille

There's also a movie with Jacqueline Bissett and Robert Morley (an oldie).
Can't tremenber the name but it would be a great addition.

Like Water for Chocolate... loved the book.

This is my all time favorite question to be asked on a foodie board.

Chocolat
Like Water For Chocolate
Babette's Feast
Eat Drink Man Woman
Tortilla Soup
Pieces of April
American Cuisine
Big Night
Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe

Chocolat - Johnny Depp and chocolate, what else do you need?
Babette's Feast - the ultimate "food prep" foodie movie. Even the way the general cuts his fig, I play that scene over and over. Big Night would have to follow close behind on "food prep."

The foreign ones - wherever possible, get them in the original language with subtitles.

Pieces of April and American Cuisine are sleeper faves. Both are food-based, both have good stories. Pieces of April is about the only Katie Holmes performance I can watch for more than 15 minutes.

And one more thing - the first time I watched Chocolat was with my daughter. I paused the movie and ran to the kitchen. I made the most luxurious hot chocolate with half and half and semi-sweet chocolate. She was thrilled when I brought it to the living room. It's a great memory.

The Big Night
Chocolat
Last Holiday (trust me, Gerard Depardieu as a French chef is great, and in real life he has written a cookbook too, recently)
Eat Drink Man Woman/Tortilla Soup (same film, different cast and settings, both worth it)
Mostly Martha

RATATOUILLE.

ahem.

The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover
Chocolat
Like Water For Chocolate
Babette's Feast
Eat Drink Man Woman
Tom Jones
The Joy Luck Club
Big Night

Ratatouille
Charlie/Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (both of them)

- Tampopo
- Udon
- Bulgogi

Simply Irrestible
I know most people hate this movie, but I love the way the people respond to the food in the movie. I know, I know, they're actors but still. I wish I had a recipe for those little caramely cream puff things b/c I want to eat them so bad!

Chocolat
What's Cooking?
Soul Food
Chocolat

Cassaendra has it right. Also, we just watched SOYLENT GREEN for my anthropology of food and cuisine class, which was an unusual but very relevant choice.

tampopo, eat drink man woman and babette's feast get my vote.

Check out Kamome Diner--it's a not-very-well-known Japanese flick about two Japanese women trying to start up a diner in Finland. The plot is slow and at times it's a little surreal, but it's good.

Another vote for Who I sKIlling the Great Chefs of Europe. Delightful music, great view of the late Phillipe Noiret's nekkid nethers, and the fabulous Robert Morley in a role specially written for him. And which mobster movie had the scene with thej slicing garlic with a razor blade to make pasta sauce in prison?

Tampopo for sure. The greatest food movie EVER!!!!!

@Lemons - I think that was Goodfellas but I'm not sure. Someone out there better versed in ganster movies chime in, please!

So many great suggestions here!
The entire film Goodfellas wouldn't really qualify as a "foodie movie", but remember that scene when they were cooking in jail? Loved it!

Great recs! Only other one I can think of is The Butcher's Wife. I loved the cooking/eating scenes in The Big Chill - to the sounds of Heard it Through the Grapevine. Sometimes, you gotta dance!

Was it Goodfellas where they were making fabulous Italian food in their private prison kitchen with the very best ingredients? There was one from the 70's or 80's that turned out of be XXX rated and I was in shock, but I forget the name. Shocked it right out of my head!

My favs are Chocolat and Babette's Feast.

I love scenes with people eating or cooking. Makes me want to cook and eat.

Of course: Eat, Drink, Man, Woman
Chocolat
Like Water For Chocolate (although the book's food scenes were more evocative)
Soul Food

I watched some Korean movie, don't know the name, but they were eating Jja jang myun and it looked and sounded (sssssslurp!) so good.

Tampopo, Ratatouille, and Babette's Feast express such passion for food. I watch each of them once a year. I'd also suggest Gurinder Chadha's movies. Bend it Like Beckham is built on aloo gobi, which Chadha cooks in one of the extras. Much less well known, What's Cooking? is worth checking out, its culture-clash clichés notwithstanding. For the same reason, I'd wouldn't mind watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding again.

Is it wrong to consider The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover a food movie?

Yes, that was Goodfellas with the cooking in the prison kitchen. BTW, the scene in BigChill (one of my favorite films) where they're cleaning up after I think the pizza meal and they're all dancing around - they did that in a single take. Mildly amazing.

I accept The Cook, The Thief, etc. My Dinner With André deserves a mention. Cool Hand Luke strays even further from the post, but who can forget the 40 eggs? Beans for dinner in Blazing Saddles?

Hm, can't believe nobody recommended Mostly Martha!

I love that scene in The Big Chill - the entire soundtrack for that film is flawless; and I also vote for Ratatouille and Eat Drink Man Woman.

I forgot my beloved Ratatouille. It came up last night when we were looking for movies on Blu Ray. Can't wait to see Ratatouille at home on Blu Ray!
