Food to gain weight on

For my upcoming job, I have to gain 15 pounds. I've got a high metabolism, so I'm going to need some dense dlicious ideas, and I do not want to be chugging down the protein shakes.
What are the most tasty calorie laden dishes you can think of?

36 Comments:

Ice Cream

Pizza

Macaroni and Cheese

Chocolate anything

Mashed Potatoes

Lasagna

(Can you tell I've been on a diet too long? LOL!)

I would try to eat high calorie things that still contain nutrition, since going the all-fast food route can lead to some unhealthy side effects.

Avocados, olives, olive oil (or any oil), coconut milk, tree nuts, nut butters ... they all contain a lot of calories, along with vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. Drinking your calories is easier than chewing them down, so make avocado smoothies or milkshakes, or Thai curry with coconut milk and peanuts or cashews. Even putting some extra olive oil on vegetables or greens can really increase calories.

Cheese and cream contain calcium, at least. Whole-wheat pasta alfredo would still pack on some pounds.

I would TOTALLY load up on as much pasta and cheese and cheesy pasta as possible. Doughnuts get pretty straight to the point, mashed potatoes, beer...you don't have to be TOTALLY unhealthy, but I'd definitely include carbohydrates and some sort of fat in every meal to gain weight quickly, because foods high in sugar make you bloat. Have fun!

Come spend a week with me. It's so easy I could cry (sounds like a country-western song!).

I have to agree with Brownie: ice cream.

Oh how awful for you! :) Here are some things I can think of:

pancakes/waffles
Bagels and Cream Cheese
Fries (loaded or cheese versions)
Chili Nachos
mashed potatoes
(bacon) cheeseburgers
Loaded Hotdogs
Alfredo anything
Ice Cream
Brownies
Pizza
Buffalo Wings
Lasagna
Creamed Spinach
Eat Bobbies! (turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce on a roll)
Add copious amounts of cheese to everything!

Let us know how it goes-and good luck!

Let us know when they're hiring again....

Think foods dense in fats and carbs: nuts, grilled sandwiches, sausages, bagels, whole milk products, and you can wash it all down with some beer..

Do you want to gain muscle or fat mass? In both cases, you need balanced nutrition, but in greater caloric amounts. Try making a turkey + BLAT sandwich (bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado), and drink whole milk with it for lunch. Nuts, seeds, and dried fruits are very calorie dense, so you could use them to top up salads, rice, or just to eat as a snack throughout the day.

@Perky: next line (warning, cheesy) - No mountains to climb or rivers to cross, you don't even have to try...

Ramp way up on the carbs, potatoes, rice, pasta, bread etc. Include gravies, red meats, fried chicken and the like. Cut back on the healthy stuff. You must be an actor? Problem won't be to gain it, but to reverse it after. Good Luck.

Now I know why I am not losing weight, I eat all of these things!!!

Remember Charlize Theron gained 50 pounds for Monster? One word: doughnuts.

@deeptabitha...........perfect lyrics. Gosh, we don't want any exercise after all, right? ;-D

Why do you have to gain weight? Are you an actor?

Actor... Bouncer... Pro Wrestler... Anorexic Personal Trainer... Unexplainably Health Concious Circus Fat Lady? At any rate, you don't have to go unhealthy to gain 15 pounds, even quickly:

Marinated, Bite Sized Red Meats (pork and/or beef)

Go Wild With Your Favorite Flavors For Marinades

Grill, Pan Fry/Saute, or Broil, Using Loads Of Olive Oil

Keep It Interesting By Serving It Over A Variety Of Starches
Like Pasta, Rice, Potato, Cous Cous, Polenta, And The
Like, With Plenty Of Butter (herbed butters keep it
interesting)

Toss A Very Modest Handful Of Fresh Roasted Greens
And/Or Vegetables, To Further Keep It Interesting. Grab
Greens You've Never Tried Before, And Balance Them
With Sugar, Salt & Pepper.

Be Sure To Keep It Interesting, Or You Can't Get There
From Here!

LAST TIP - Do Little Else... Only Eat, Sleep, Shop, And
Then EAT AGAIN! I envy you. Bon Appetit, Guten Apeiti,
Buono Appetito...

Wow, some fantastic ideas-thanks all!
I can feel the green hot envy though from all directions. I'm going to be a lifeguard, and I need some bouyancy and muscle mass.

@michichan - What kind of job requires you to gain 15 pounds?????

@michichan - Never mind, I just re-read your last post.

I have been struggling with keeping weight on all my life due to genetics, and the last few years chronic illness. I was able to put on 30+ much needed pounds the past few years with diet and exercise, and I'll admit I take medication that stimulates my appetite but I don't think you need to go that drastic!

I don't think it's so much what you eat as the frequency, I had insomnia at the time and was eating full meals at 3am. I try to eat about every 3-4 hours.

I know you said you don't want to be chugging protein shakes but what about Carnation Instant Breakfasts, or Ensure? I drink them for breakfast every day, they are not only a good source of calories, but vitamins as well.

Finally what I credit the most to my weight gain is learning how to cook really well. I started reading food blogs to stimulate my appetite and then learned how to make the foods I was craving, now I don't have to rely on others for food and I can make anything I want.

Good Luck!

In addition to eating certain types of food and eating more frequently you might also try this practical tip for weight loss called "talk to the paw" but simply reverse it - adding rather than minus-ing.

I second the Ensure suggestion - when I was in high school I was very sick for about a month and dropped almost 20 pounds (at my lowest I weighed in at 114 - I'm 5'11"). Because I was so ill I couldn't keep food in my system, and all I could eat was Ensure, rice and chicken. I later branched out into saltines and peanut butter...god that was a horrible time in my life! Anyways Ensure definitely helped, it's easy on your stomach, pretty tasty, and definitely helps you gain weight.

Sorry - need to correct my last link because it now goes to a story on meatballs. Which actually is also a good idea. Eating meatballs for weight gain. Because really who ever gets tired of them? Healthy too.

But anyway here's the corrected link .

Very good answers above.

I also recommend Fettuccini Alfredo and Montecristo sandwiches. Absolutely delicious calorie bombs.

Hmm.... I would drink coke and follow the other suggestions. Oh, yeah no lean proteins. Bring on the bacon, rib eyes, and all the butter you can choke down.

Anything with cheese... cheese for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks...

Add nuts to everything - pastas, stir frys, rices, for snacking...

Do like Hispanics do and do not skimp on any fried foods... try this sandwich, it's awesome!!!

I also agree with the Ensure suggestion... I had to take them a while ago to gain some weight and they worked. Also, take vitamin supplements - they opened up my appetite and gained a few pounds too...

Since you're a lifeguard, you'll need to stay healthy, so stay away from junk food. Eat peanut butter (or almond butter) right off the spoon. Help yourself to lots of tree nuts. Try split pea soup. Have lots of guacamole. And I'll second the recommendation for coconut milk -- try making banana smoothies with it.

Have calorie dense snacks between meals - nuts, cheese, chocolate
Stimulate your appetite with a pre-dinner drink and yummy cheesy appetizers
Cook your veggies and top with butter/oil
Do you get tested for pot at your job?

Peanut butter, my friend, and all it's derivatives (satay sauce, peanut noodles, PB truffles, etc.).

Avocado shakes are another good idea, like someone mentioned. You can even fit more than one avocado in each shake!

Eat granola, double up your starches (pasta sandwiches, etc.), add some healthy fats and you'll be 15 lbs heavier in no time.

French fries! If you're non vegetarian, go for poutine. French fries are so fattening. Or go for those 1400 onion blossoms from Outback or something.

Love all the suggestions (and am green with envy) but, as put simply by my diabetic father, the only way to lose weight is to take in less calories than you burn. Likewise, the only way to gain weight is to take in more calories than you burn.

I would think the simplest and least heartburn/high cholesterol/negative outcomes later on method for this would be to eat as you normally, do, except for the following mantra:

Always. Have. Seconds.

@fritesandfries - 2,300 calories. I know, I know, I've eaten them too and my jaw is still on the floor. I'm taking my recovery one day though, and I should be able to look at fried food again sometime in the next seven years.

Pasta Salad:

2 boxes tri-color rotini
1/2 pound hard salami, cut into strips
3 different colors bell pepper, chopped fine
1/2 red onion, chopped superfine
1 can black olives, sliced
1 can Parmesan cheese (yes, the stuff in the can, because it coats the salad - the real stuff just falls to the bottom)
1/2 bottle Kraft Free Zesty Italian dressing (yes, free, because the salad can last in the fridge for a week and not get soggy)

Is it healthy? Yes, fairly. However, I can never stop eating it, so on my third 2-cup serving (or before) it fulfills my mantra above. =)

@myself - one day at a time :)

3500 calories per pound

So to gain 15 pounds in a month, you need almost 2000 extra calories per day.

Easiest way is to drink milkshakes (the real kind) with lunch and dinner. A large one is over 1000 calories.

Or the large Starbucks milkshake like drinks.

Not to be a party pooper, but honestly, this really isn't a nutrition forum--if you're a skinny, growing teenage boy and you want to bulk up, I would continue whatever weight training and swimming training you're doing to prepare for being a guard, and let your appetite take care of itself. I know a lot of guys who tried to beef up, and then when they stopped growing and they continued eating it didn't really help their athletic performance.

To gain muscle weight (and muscle 'holds' water which will add to your ability to stay afloat) if you're not happy with how you're developing, I'd see a trainer who could prescribe a nutrition and lifting plan, probably with lots of 'clean' protien. Just eating more won't necessarily improve your athletic performacen.

I'm not sure that a forum dedicated to nutrition as opposed to a forum dedicated to food would have answers that were necessarily more credible unless there were some sort of authority level of those posting answers to the questions that could be defined and then checked and even then I'm not so sure that could be done or would be done as a usual sort of thing . . . i.e. a doctor could post information and someone could check the phone book to be sure there was such a person but then without telephoning the doctor him or herself to ask them if indeed it was them who posted the information really there are no assurances.

Grain of salt. Is a good seasoning.

@embolini9: my waistline is expanding just thinking about it.
