Favorite thing to eat with mayo

Robyn's article about Chilean hot dogs and sandwiches gave me a big craving for mayonnaise, but I can't think of what I want to eat. What are your favorite things to eat with mayo? Sandwiches, salads, sushi? Anything unusual? Do you like the mayo flavor to stand out or do you use it as a base for some other flavor?

50 Comments:

Either a really good hamburger, which are rare (some pun intended), or with Braunschweiger on rye toast with meunster or provolone cheese.

Tomato. When I've got goo, homegrown summer tomatoes, I have been known to eat tomato and mayo sandwiches.

I absolutely love mayonnaise, and feel that it works well in almost every setting. I think I like it best with fried potatoes (chips, fries, friets, whatever you want to call them), because they are a nice, bland backdrop against which the mayonnaise can shine. The best ever mayonnaise to have with friets is an extremely cheep and trashy Dutch brand called Gouda's Glorie. It is very sweet, like all Dutch mayonnaises, and quite plasticky, and definitely not healthy, but it's delicious. For a pairing that will send it over the top, eat your potatoes and Gouda's Glorie mayonnaise with sate sauce and chopped onions: an unlikely but truly glorious way of eating a whole day's worth of fat and calories at once!

Chik-fil-a sandwich with two packs of mayo, black pepper, and extra, extra, extra pickles (no I'm not pregnant) and a sweet ice tea with extra, extra lemons (what? I just like tartness).

Or a BLT, with lots of mayo and black pepper.

Another vote for tomato & mayo sandwiches -- on white bread.

@kjgibson--that reminds me, my baby sister used to eat white bread and mayo sandwiches. Grossed us out, but she loved it.

A just-picked garden tomato and mayo sandwich with salt & pepper is one of the most heavenly summertime lunches ever!

I love homemade mayonnaise on fresh steamed asparagus. . . man, I think I'll do that tonight.

I like to add chipotle to mayo and dip artichoke leaves in it. Other than that, I like my own BBQ chix salad - 1 part mayo to 1 part BBQ sauce of your choice makes up the dressing.

I love mayo on veggies - artichokes, asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli... and definitely those tomato sandwiches!

A fried egg sandwich med. still holding alittle liquid yolk and a thick slice of tomatoes on a skillet toasted white bread with a generouse slathering of hellmans mayo...salt and pepper to taste

A leftover turkey sandwich:
bread (I'll even eat white bread sometimes with leftover turkey sandwiches),
turkey
Best Foods mayonnaise
salt & pepper.

HEAVEN.

Also, there's a sushi place in my town that makes a spicy mussel roll that is amazing! With great spicy mayonnaise...

Most sandwiches just mayo, a few mayo and spicy brown mustard. Goes great with tomatoes, ham, bacon, turkey, egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, potato salad. I have never put mayo in a cooked casserole. Something about cooking it makes me a little nervous. Don't know why. Doesn't make sense. Also never put it on fries or hot dogs. I've had it on hamburgers and liked it ok, but I never even think to put it on when I'm making them. I think using mayo as a dipping sauce is a Southern thing? Doesn't appeal to me.

A lettuce and tomato sandwich. All fresh ingredients, full-fat mayo on fresh Wonder.
Why, Perky mah deah have y'all nevuh seen Paula Deen?

Wow, I really love mayo but I try not to have it too often. Shrimp salad wraps, egg salad straight, carrot raisin salad, macaroni salad, tuna salad, BLTs, spicy salmon rolls, chicken salad sanwich with a slice of jellied cranberry on white toast. Fresh garden tomatoes sliced in half with a dollop of mayo and a sprinkle of sea salt.

Oh and also tartar sauce on fried fish especially sea scallops!

I used to LOVE cheese lettuce and mayonnaise sandwiches - cheddar, iceberg, miracle whip, and pepperidge farm white slice. Heaven.

Dipping stuff in mayo is not necessarily a southern thing...it's also a Belgian thing. The South doesn't have the market cornered on fatty food you know! :-) (BTW: I'm not Southern. I've barely even been to the South).

Mayo with sweet potato fries is devine, as is mayo mixed with ketchup on normal fries.

Mayo on chicken sandwiches, mayo on breakfast sandwiches... load it up!

On a toasted tomato sandwich or in egg salad. I can't imagine making egg salad with anything else.

A kielbasa sandwich with mayo, provolone and dijon mustard....sexy.

Someone else said sweet potato fries - yay! A little curry in the mayo on those please. Mmmm.

a crusty baguette with moist roasted chicken breast, avocado, ripe tomato, salt, and a generous serving of mayo - YUM!

A BOBBIE-extra mayo please. :) only thing I ever get extra mayo on. Other items where mayo is necessary:

Egg Salad
Potato Salad
Cheeseburgers
Cheesesteaks
Fries-but Ketchup is mixed in too
Ham and Cheese sandwich
Grilled Chicken Sandwich (if it's not the bbq kind)
Cheese Sandwich
Tuna salad
Chicken Salad
Broccoli Salad

Ok, didn't think I liked mayo all that much but maybe I do..:)

Nothing goes with mayo.

Everything goes with Miracle Whip. >:-)

@Butrflygirly: what's a BOBBIE?

@LiveTo Eat: It's Deliciousness on a roll-with a little crack added, I do believe. It's so yummy. Think Thanksgiving on a roll. Everything is fresh. Here's the site:

www.capriottis.com (don't know why you can't click, but it's a great sub shop)

Everything from there is good :) Well, everything i've had anyway. Capastrami is good too-but no mayo necessary.

I'm a little confused. Are we putting mayo on egg salad sandwiches or IN egg salad?

Peanut butter (chunky preferred) on rye with lettuce...no kidding.
Try it.

My favorite mayo is a Japanese variety called Kewpie.

It is insanely good - I love to fry up some shrimp or scallops with soy sauce, then pour a little mayo over it and let it get all warm and crunchy along the edges. Yummmmers!

A fried egg sandwich! I still can't believe it myself. I'm a fairly recent convert - but I don't think I'd ever go back. It's awesome.

nanner samitches wit mayo n salt !!!!

I add mayo to a lot of things. First off, I always eat fries with (regular) mayo. If I'm in the mood, I'll add a bit of ketchup and a very tiny bit of yellow mustard. Of course, mayo with the usual stuff like egg salad, chicken salad, tuna salad, lalala salad, ...

It's great with yakisoba, steamed asparagus, or on the side with chili w/ rice. I use Kewpie extensively for stuff like this. Wouldn't use Kewpie on sandwiches though. My mother did when I was a little kid (30 years ago). Of course, okonomiyaki too.

Spicy Kewpie is good with some of the sushi that I eat. I don't eat raw fish, but I would imagine it would be funky.

Salads, of course - shrimp, potato, egg, coleslaw (but not macaroni, ever). Actually, I can just eat a hard-boiled egg with mayo, don't even need to make a salad out of it. A very thin layer on a slice of rye bread underneath a slice of, um, bologna (yes, this is my guilty junk pleasure). Basil-favoured home-made mayo - with crabcakes...mmm!

Either used in tartar sauce, or a great pesto mayo slathered on a mozzarella, basil, and tomato panini ... delicious!

I have to say artichokes are my favorite thing to eat with mayo. That and fish baked with homemade lemon/garlic/black pepper mayo on top. The mayo bakes into an airy and crispy crust and keeps the fish especially moist.

I definitely agree that mayo is a wonderful condiment/sauce. I like it in many types of sandwiches, egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, crab cakes. . . I sometimes eat mayo with french fries.
You can make all different kinds of mayonnaise flavors too - curry mayo, spicy mango mayo, tabasco mayo, etc.

Who know that so many people love tomato & mayo sandwiches? Are all of you east-coasters?

The tomato sandwich is simple and perfect, and about the only time I ever crave real mayonnaise .

My favorite thing to eat with mayo is seafood. To about 1 cup of low fat mayo I add 2 t. soy sauce, 1 T. sambal oelek, 2 t. sesame oil, 4 chopped scallions and one 6 oz. package of cooked lump crab meat. This mixture I then combine with about a pound and a half of sauteed shrimp, squid and scallops (in any combination). Run the whole thing under the broiler until bubbly and brown in places and serve over hot white rice with Asian style pickles. It's absolutely awesome!!!!

When I was younger, my dad would boil a chicken and we'd dip the meat in mayo -- yummy! Sometimes he mixed in a little soy sauce w/the mayo and that was even better. I rarely eat chicken now, but sometimes I still crave this unusual pairing.

Hey butterface, we do grow and eat tomatoes on the east coast! I love miracle whip, new yorker american cheese, and a juicy tomato on white bread...............HEAVEN, I wish it was summer!

Hey! I'm an East Coastie...I've never heard of this tomato & Mayo sandwich. Maybe because I HATE tomatoes? But, I'm friends with people who do...Where on the East Coast is this popular?

I grew up on fried egg sandwiches and still love them to this day and I like them with just mayo. Once in a while I will put on sprouts and tomato. I also love mayo and I like it on both sides of the sandwich. Another favorite are Vidalia Onion sandwiches (a James Beard classic). They are just good white bread preferably cut into circles with mayo and a thin slice of Vidalia onion. Pimento cheese and olive is also a good choice with just a smear of mayo.

A dip for artichokes: equal parts mayo and sour cream with curry powder. Yummmmm.

I like mayo on white bread with american cheese (deli sliced, not "singles"). For a while there, it was my favorite hangover helper. But it was just so yummy, I've kinda incorporated it into regular rotation.

During homegrown tomato season, I'll slap a few slices onto my cheese and mayo sandwich. East Coaster here.

In college my favorite sandwich was a peanut butter, strawberry jelly, banana and mayonnaise sandwich: Toast the bread, put mayo on both inside parts, then the peanut butter on one side, the jelly on the other, and then bananas. I know it seems disgusting, but it's absolutely delicious!
