Eats for a Sunburned Moron?

So yesterday, like the idiot that I can sometimes be, I sat outside too long and got a horrible sunburn (I was right in the middle of a really good book though!) I've spent the day at work whimpering, drinking water and rubbing aloe vera all over myself, but I have absolutely NO appetite (and I still look/feel like a lobster). I can't think what would be good to eat, something cool and refreshing maybe? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...also if anyone has any sunburn remedies to share, I'd love them.

Ask someone if they would please make you some Cold Cucumber Soup.

The only serious med for a sunburn is Panama Jack's After Sun Burn Relief. I sunburn easily, and it's the only thing I've found that actually works almost on-contact. Most department stores and pharmacies carry it.

Poached salmon (eaten cold), and cucumber salad. Both are extremely simple to make, wonderful cold, and will make you feel good. To finish, peach sorbet and a little dish of raspberries.

I always liked eating ice pops when I got sunburned. As far as the remedies, mix 1 cup skim milk, 4 cups cool water, and some ice cubes and dip a cloth in it. Cold compress = awesome. Also, a cool (not freezing cold) bath with half a cup of cooked oatmeal can help relieve the itching. If you don't like the oatmeal idea, you can add baking soda to a bath of tepid water, but instead of towling it off at the end, let it dry on you. Hope this helps!

Cucumbers with a light cream/yogurt sauce. Maybe if you drink Aloe Vera juice and it will cool you from the inside out? Prolly not.

I agree a cool bath with oatmeal (or Aveeno's oatmeal bath treatment in it) could help, and I'm sure a good strong drink would!

I can certainly feel your pain - it took me a good couple of years (read: at least 15-20, even after my absolutely worst sunburn, which happened when I was 7 or 8) to realise that I would never have a beautiful bronze tan, and that no matter how long or little I stay in the sun, I would still look (and feel, just like you said), like a freshly boiled lobster. So, I can tell you from experience:

*Do try Panama Jack that LunaPierCook recommended. I've tried all kinds of other remedies, from aloe vera to diced cold cucumbers (my Gran's idea. It did cool the burn area down, but so would any ice cold compress, I'd imagine), none of them worked nearly as well.

* For whatever reason, I could only eat cherries or cold yoghurt & cucumber soup (really easy to make, no cooking involved: blend together one part plain yoghurt and one part water --I use filtered or mineral --, garlic, salt, freshly ground black pepper and dill, to taste and 1/2 medium cucumber. Chill the mixture if not cold enough. Chop the remaining 1/2 cucumber and add to the soup. Eat!). Although, I'm quite certain some sorbet or Rita's ices (if you have them where you are. if not, any Italian ices would do) could be lovely, too.

You could always look for foods high in vitamin E, which is good for your skin-- raw sliced mangoes, raw spinach, kiwis, broccoli, and peanuts/almonds/sunflower seeds. Feel better soon!

I like to eat lots of melons - cantaloupe or water melons...

Also, I like Haagen Dasz Strawberry or Mango Sherbets... they're so cooling and refreshing.

And for the sunburn... I go for the natural aloe vera. Take a few "leaves", cut them open to expose the clear gel, get rid of all the green because it stains... and rub the gel all over you... it's messy, but it works. I live in the Caribbean by the beach and I forgot to put sunblock on the top of my feet and I am feeling your pain too.

Hope your appetite's back and that you feel better...

I live by the beach in Southern California and am quite fair. I slather on the 45 SPF, but still occasionally get burned. I swear by keeping a bottle of aloe vera and a jar of cocoa butter in the fridge. I put on the aloe and then rub on the butter.
As far as food goes, I make a Thai peanut sauce and toss it with slaw veggies (cabbage, shredded carrots, julienned red bell pepper, chopped cilantro and basil, sometimes a sprout of some kind, sometimes jicama). I make my sauce with smooth peanut butter, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, fresh giner, fresh garlic, fresh lime juice and a dash or two of hot sauce. Sorry to say, I have no idea of the measurements, other than I start with about a cup of the peanut butter and add the other ingredients to thin and to taste.
Hope you feel better soon!

poor baby. make a couple of cups of really strong tea. just regular tea. and pour it in a cool bath. The tannins in it will take the sting out of the sunburn.

We just got back from the beach where my teenage daughter used a "protective" tanning lotion instead of the SPF 85 sunscreen that I brought along. She has lobster legs.

In addition to the topical remedies like aloe gel, you need to make sure that you are not dehydrated. I've been forcing gatorade and clear fruit juices on my daughter. All she wanted to eat was some cold fruit for the first day afterwards.

Oh, and vinegar temporarily takes the sting out of sunburn. And it makes you smell like salad!

@embolini9 - you have my deepest heartfelt sympathy! I did that in Jamaica last month. Peeled for 2 weeks! Sending *hugs* your way, uh maybe not! Ouch......

ditto the vinegar suggestion from Library Lady.

Preferably apple cider vinegar, don't know why, but that's what I was told. Depending on how extensive the burned area, either take a cool bath with cider vnegar in it and soak for 15 minutes or soak a cloth in some vinegar poured over ice and place the cloth on the affected area to relieve the sting of the burn. It has something to do with the pH of your skin, but it works.

Drink plenty of water, take advil, and spray solarcaine.

@brooke29 - Rita's Ices are certainly good for what ails you! They make a wonderful dessert after a BBQ.

@embolini - I feel your pain. I got a horrible burn while I was pregnant and blew up like a water balloon (which was of some concern to my OB/Gyn some thousand miles away).

Keep moisturizing and drinking lots of water. And if you get Rita's and it's too frozen to scoop, rub the container on yourself until the ice is soft enough to serve.

Drink gazpacho - full of skin protecting antioxidants (eg lycopene), rehydrating fluids, vitamins, fibre, minerals; also cooling and delicious.
Apply nothing to the skin but pure aloe vera and lavender essential oil to help the inflammation until the pain has dissipated.

These are all great ideas guys, thanks! I feel a LITTLE better today (at least I was able to sleep better, and my skin is no longer radiating heat) and I THINK it might be turning into a tan, with the exception of my forehead, which is currently peeling. I made myself some cucumber soup (PERFECT suggestion since I love cucumbers...it's actually a running joke at the office that I bring cucumber slices or sandwiches for lunch a lot) and had a gin and tonic and a lime popsicle and felt much better. I think I'll make some gazpacho tonight, I haven't done it in awhile. Thanks again, always wear sunscreen!!

Wear a watermelon on your head and eat massive amounts of prednisone.
