Are we running out of tomatoes?
Are we running out of Tomatoes?
I've not been paying attention to this story (there is a story, right?) so I'm not sure how bad things are. I recall seeing a news blurb here-and-there about a tomato shortage and rising costs... but now it's hit me personally. Recently it seems anything I order with tomato sauce or tomatoes in any other form, whole or otherwise, is being rationed like we're the sole survivors on a tiny island with a single tomato plant. From pizzas, Italian subs and just burgers and sandwiches... where's the tomatoes? Where's the sauce? Why is everything so dry?
I'm just complaining about fast-food... so I can only imagine what's going in the world of fine dining. Probably still the same portions, with a price increase?
Can somebody please give me the 'short'...simple-man's version? :)
Thank you.

If you Google the words "tomato shortage" you'll find mention of such a thing in news reports from 2004 and 2006. It looks as though it happens in waves. It looks as though things are Ok in Leamington, Ontario though where Heinz has their biggest plant.

I think we're probably safe, but I know the prices have gone up slightly. It's also (at least in the north east) been a very cold spring, so the tomatoes will probably be a bit late this year, unless it gets warm very quickly!

I have two right here on my kitchen counter.
I was thinking about auctioning them on eBay but if you contact me VERY SOON I can offer you a special price!

Seriously, dude.
But if you don't want to buy my two beautiful tomatoes we'll just have to wait for more tomatoes to be grown based on our Ruler of Tomatoes and Apples: McDonald's.
If they can keep the apple business in Washington state up and booming surely they can do the same for the tomato business.
Chop chop. Oops I just ate one.
