30th Birthday Barbecue

My 30th birthday is on Sunday, and my fiance and I invited a bunch of friends and family to a local park for a barbecue to celebrate. We both love cooking and are going to be doing the grilling - any ideas for great sides or main dishes - pretty much anything? I've never had an "adult" party for myself, so help me out!

Buy bone in chicken pieces, they are affordable and good to grill. Make your sides in large quantity, fresh tomato and cuke salad in a vinegarette, potato salad, pasta salad, cole slaw. So some burgers, dogs, very good buns, if your doing ribs low and slow is your friend even if you do them in the oven first and finish them onsite.
Cold drinks hit the spot.

I'd go with Jerzees idea, but you can't forget sweet and spice BBQ beans and Ice cold watermelon, drunk style......

If you don't want to do the standard picnic fare...how about a kebab party....you can set up all the kebabs ahead of time. Use any kind of marinade you desire....I marinade everything in the same marinade. In the past I've done beef, pork & chicken cubes, shrimp, scallops.....and every veggie imaginable.
I've found that instead of putting meats & veggies on the kebabs together, I put all of one item on each kebab, then when you're finished grilling you can either slide the ingredients off the kebabs onto a big platter, or leave them on the skewers on a big platter. Serve them with pita or flat breads & various sauces....tzatziki, asian sauces......whatever strikes your fancy!

Ooh kebabs are a great idea - and I never put them on the same skewer either - they cook for different times at different heats!

BBQ beans also sound great, and I already have me mum on potato salad detail! Anything else?

Oh, and there will be lots of beer.

If you do kebabs, you can do fruit this way also, and even grill some of it.
Grilled pineapple is wonderful.
Skewer the fruits and serve with dips as well, like a honey/ginger/cream cheese, mint and sour cream with lime juice, etc.
Then you have a whole kebab theme. You can even do squares of cake on kebabs and grill them lightly so they have a toasty crunch that goes well with the fruit and sweet dips. Would hold up better than a frosted cake too.

Don't forget to have a cold water balloon/water gun fight at the end to cool off!
Happy Birthday!

who doesn't like a kebab?

bone-in chicken, marinated the night before in some adobo seasoning and OJ - instant mojo chicken! leg quarters are cheap and tasty.

we had a big memorial day BBQ and i made a spicy pineapple relish that turned out shockingly well and was a nice fresh sidekick for the grilled meats.
