For those of you with a Trader Joe's.....$2 buck chuck! Charles Shaw, I buy the cab and the merlot regularly, and the valdique when I can find it. I have no idea how they make wine for that price, but it really is good! And I never feel guilty for opening a bottle just to have one glass.

I have two - Woodbridge Sauvignon Blanc and Lindeman Bin 40 Merlot.

Vinho Verde's Sonalto. A lovely light sparkling white from Portugal that generally runs around $6 a bottle here in Central Texas.

I know that a lot of people immediately think of Franzia or Peter Vella when you mention boxed wine, but they have come a long way since the late 80's. Black Box & Hardy's are both brands that deliver an acceptable budget wine in a box. Specifically, we like the Shiraz & Cab varieties. We always have a box of something for when we want a quick glass or need a cup for cooking.
Otherwise, Yellowtail, Rosemount & Wyndham are all good everyday values in wine. You can get a bottle from 7.99-11.99 depending upon the variety. We like Australian wines, particularly reds....so we've found quite a selection in this price category.

TJ's has a fantastic $5 and under selection. I usually just select one based on their descriptions and it keeps me happy.
I'm also exploring the possibilities of Babycham: http://unarata.blogspot.com/2008/04/oh-sweet-mystery-of-life.html

Ste Michelle I love the washington state wines they seem to have a good full bodied taste and very reasonable pice tags.

For me, it's all about Vendange when comes to the cheap stuff...

I'm not a big wine drinker, but the yellowtail shiraz is reliably good. I'm poor (student loans) so I'm all about finding the

I heartily second the Charles Shaw, except in NYC it's "3 Buck Chuck." the chardonnay is so light, no nasty sting.
There's a delicious organic red called Luzon Verde, usually about $8, sometimes hard to find. Nice smooth flavor.
I actually tend to prefer the cheaper wines...go figure!

@StripfyChef
I so agree with that - when you can get his Valdigue grab a few bottles...
Ah so LOVEEE Trada Joes!

Vinho Verde, Portuguese white wine, If you can find Casal Y Garcia brand, should sell for no more than $9 a bottle. Serve it well chilled, excellent to drink on a hot summer day with some fruit and soft cow's milk cheese, It is a tad acidic and has a little carbonation to it.

Yellow Tail Shiraz and Smoking Loon Syrah, all the way! Also I like the Ravenswood Cab, but mostly cause of the label!
embolini9 at 3:10PM on 04/28/08
I'll agree with embolini9--read my mind!

Chateau St Michelle or Twisted River Late Harvest.
I need a glass of wine now.

I am incredibly picky with my wine, and I have found a new love - and the only white wine I will drink! (not even counting the great price, it is an AMAZING wine!)
Voga Pinot Grigio... runs about $9 a bottle or so. You can buy it pretty much anywhere now.
It looks like a cool VOSS water bottle (not what you would expect for a wine bottle), but is SO good. My husband actually bought me 8 bottles of it for christmas because he knows how much I love it! :o)

Anything by Llano Estacado, a great Texas vineyard. Their sauvignon blanc has won over lots of my snotty wine snob friends, too! :)

I like Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon a lot. It's nice and oaky, with a slight peppery finish. Good stuff.

Peachy Canyon Red Zinfandel. Straight out of Paso Robles, California.

For under $15 (~$14 last I saw), try Vinum Cellars "PETS" (petite sirah).

I'm SO GLAD I found this thread -- I've been in Florence for the past four months and have developed a serious red wine habit; here, you can get a fantastic bottle of Montepulciano chianti for less than three euro, but I was worried about what I was going to do when I got home. I'll have to write all of these down =).

There are so many great wines under $15 bucks out there; you just have to find a retailer you trust. I look wines that are food-friendly and still offer the complexity of their more expensive counterparts. For everyday drinking I'm a sucker for inexpensive Cote du Rhones like the Chateau Monfaucon and Chateau Mont Redon, especially from the amazing 2005 vintage. I also love Ruggeri Corsini Barbera d'Alba from Italy--it's bright cherry and violet notes and vibrant acidity are the perfect pairing for panini.

@2qrs......My very frugal Irish Mama loved her Bergundy wine and got more bang for the buck in a box. We called it her Box O' Happiness. ;)
I became a bit of a wine snob, but have just started a new med and any alcohol is O.U.T., so........back to perfecting my iced tea. Oh well.

BURGUNDY..........yikes, I hate misspellings!

Gnarly Head Zinfandel is an awesome red for 8 bucks! And I second Trader Joe's selection of under-five-bucks wines!
