what kitchen smells effect you the most

They say that memory and scent are strongest linked. What smells trigger memories for you the most strongly. For me it's the smell of olive oil and sauteeing onions and garlic.

Back in the 50's my mother used to give my grandmother home permanents in our kitchen. I guess that smell had the biggest effect. In the food world, I'd have to say Mom's Pot Roast. (It deserves the caps).

Well, I love all the smells while the cooking is going on. Its afterward that makes me ill. I can't stand stale cooking smells. BLECH. And fry an egg? I will wretch like nobodys business.

@grampart........My mother was a hairdresser who worked from home, so our kitchen (whole house actually) often smelled of permanent wave solution which would bring tears to your eyes. Later years, the smells I recall most are baking bread, apple pies, cookies, etc. Cooking smells were onions and garlic, steak under the broiler, but my favorite is still chicken on the spit, being basted with butter. That smell called me home.

Turkey. I have not consumed turkey since I was forced to eat it as a kid. I have never cooked a turkey, nor will I ever cook a turkey! That greasy cooking smell from my youth turned me completely off.

bacon being fried on early sunday mornings
mom's shish kabobs grilling out back
stuffed mushrooms at thanksgiving
onions being sauteed (sp?)

I didn't really like eating when I was a child, but I loved being in the kitchen with my Mum and Gran, and I loved kitchen noises and smells. To me, they were magical, never unpleasant. Smell of fresh herbs, especially, dill, coriander (aka cilantro), purple basil, parsley always remind me of my childhood. Freshly minced garlic, onions being sauteed (yep, listener!). My Gran seemed to always have something baking - cakes, biscuits, eclairs... So "baking" smells always trigger my fondest memories as well.

waking uo to the smell of coffee, my coffee maker is on a timer : ), and the smell of bacon frying, and toast toasting. Coming home from church and smelling the 'roast' of whatever. Bread baking!
Cooking outside, we use charcoal .. just the smell of charcoal smells great!

My Mom made homemade applesauce almost weekly. We ate a lot of applesauce! Cheap, local, and tasty. Apples cooking smell like home to me.

fresh bread!

SB (has some rising right now)

butter and vanilla.

Bacon frying, onions carmelizing, garlic sauteeing, pies baking, pot roast braising, chicken roasting, rib eyes smokin', coffee brewing...I guess I love all the armoas in the kitchen (even brussel sprouts).

Yes, fresh bread.

I just removed a couple loaves of Whole Wheat from the oven!

The smell of Mexican chorizo cooking up will always remind me of my dad. My mom wasn't big on cooking homemade foods, but she always made killer fried potatoes. I made some for dinner last night and it smelled like my mom was cooking in my kitchen.

Sauteing garlic and a close second, onions. Nothing says "there are going to be some good eats happening here!" like those two aromas.

On the good side, I love the smell of basil and roasting garlic. It's a fair indication that something good is coming. On the down side, I hate the smell of bananas.

Probably my favorite is baking bread, although that wasn't a childhood memory. Unless going to the bakery down the street counts :-)

I never liked pot roast (or the subsequent stew) when I was little, but I loved the smell, it reminds me of my mom cooking Sunday dinner after church. And apple pie baking, my mom always made crotzie, which was my favorite part.

Onions sauteeing and windex, for some reason, reminds me of my best friend's house. Her mom sauteed onions for EVERYTHING, and windex was pretty much the only cleaning agent they used - she'd spray down the kitchen table with windex after a meal or a snack. It's weirdly comforting.

Thanksgiving smells: turkey roasting, zucchini and onion sauteeing, STUFFING!!! Those are the cooking smells I remember.

I HATE the smell of fish in the kitchen, especially when it fumes up the whole house. I find it nauseating. I also don't like the way onions smell, yuck.
