Waffles vs. Pancakes
I missing JEP's fun questions. So, instead of talking about Aunt Sandy or any of the other Food Network stars. Let's talk about what would we rather eat... waffles or pancakes? Which is better? What kind of toppings?

Waffles for sure. Here is the end of an ode to waffles I once wrote. There was no celebrity chef there to consider as sexual conquest - it was, simply, all about the waffles.
Thick heart-shaped bittersweet double-chocolate waffles sensually topped with crunchy caramelized bananas. . . orange-almond-cumin waffles ladled with a rich heady creamy curried quail. . . oh! She loved his lemon thyme waffles luxurious with the fresh lobster claws holding hands on top, dotted with jewel-like aromatics in that pink vodka sauce. . . or the seven-grain waffle sandwich stuffed with Greek salad drizzled with biting tahini sauce. . .ah! There, those dreamy rosewater–peach waffles were dancing by her, twirling in the air with divine insouciance as she watched, the two round smiling matching curves of strawberry sorbet and lemon gelato glistening on top as they shimmered by in the night. So much waffle-y bliss! Mrs. Waffle slid further into dreamland with a sigh, dove deeply into dreamland, smiling in her sleep, and moving just a hint of a touch closer to Mr. W, she felt a spark. Just like water hitting a waffle iron that was ready to cook. She edged closer, ready.
I doubt if pancakes would work the same way.

I Looooooooove crispy waffles.
hammondcheese at 12:56PM on 04/12/08
Waffles, plain or loaded with fruit and whipped cream or ice cream. Butter and pure maple syrup is heavenly, add some bacon.....divine. Even as a sandwich holder. Sweet or savory. When I'm trying to fill a hungry growl and don't want too many calories, I just eat it straight out of the iron as I sip my coffee, and it serves it's noble purpose.
Pancakes plop in my stomach and stay there yelling nasty things at me for exactly 5 days.
PerkyMac at 1:02PM on 04/12/08
I like waffles best if I'm cooking them for more than just myself, but if it's just me I make pancakes (from a box, eek!) because I can make just one or two. I like Target's Market Pantry Buttermilk Pancake mix best. Not only is it inexpensive, but the pancakes turn out surprisingly like my homemade recipe.
A few years ago, my roommates and I had weekly "waffle parties" on Sundays and invited everyone on the block over. We provided waffles and had others bring toppings to share. It was fun to line up the four waffle irons and cook up lots of crispy waffles to share with friends and strangers (our friends started inviting their friends, who invited more friends, but fun was had by all)

I make pancakes with whole wheat flour, using unsweetened applesauce or pureed pineapple or pureed peaches instead of buttermilk. They feel significantly healthier this way:-) We love to start with a "savoury" pancake topped with fried bacon and egg (with ketchup), followed by a couple of "dessert" pancakes - topped with cottage cheese and strawberry marmalade for me, maple syrup for hubby. This is our Sunday brunch when we eat in:-).
I used to love waffles when I was little, but since we don't have a waffle maker, I now do without them (sigh), although I did tell hubby just a couple of days ago that we ought to get one. I do remember that I always preferred my waffles plain and crispy, never fancied the idea of toppings on my waffles,

Pancakes
LoCo at 1:58PM on 04/12/08
Wheat battered pancakes with a drizzle of maple and two eggs over easy on top, good for the rest of the day...
Markbb at 1:58PM on 04/12/08
Pancakes. My mother would always make either waffles or pancakes on Sundays, and my brother and I would argue and harangue her to make our favorite--I liked pancakes, he liked waffles. I love whole wheat pancakes with blackberries, or buckwheat pancakes, or oatmeal whole wheat...All with high quality maple syrup!
Christina at 3:23PM on 04/12/08
I'd prefer to eat pancakes, but I'd rather make waffles.
srhcb at 3:34PM on 04/12/08
Waffles! Regular or Belgian-Oh sooo good (plain, or with mini chocolate chips, or strawberries, or peaches). I do not eat this food as much as I would like. Anyone see the Alton Brown episode where he explained about waffles and how you are to make them? Loved that one.
I can't leave out the childhood Saturday morning b-fast of Pancakes though. Grandma's homemade recipe was my favorite! But my mom would make homemade Buttermilk ones which were good as well...:)
Butrflygirly at 3:56PM on 04/12/08
This is a hard choice to make!
Sometimes you're just in a pancake mood, and sometimes you're in a waffle mood...
If I want something with a bit more crunch, something a little airier, I'll go for waffles.
But if I want something richer and heartier, fluffy buttermilk pancakes fit the bill better.
fuuchan at 4:25PM on 04/12/08
Pancakes all the way! Preferably whole wheat. In the colder months, my favorite is pumpkin, and in the summer, blueberry with lemon zest and cornmeal. But only on the occasional weekend -- as much of a sweet tooth as I have, I'd rather have a savory breakfast. Go figure!
CookiePie at 5:01PM on 04/12/08
Definitely waffles! Butter and syrup, fruit and whipped cream or peanut butter and jelly. It's all good.
izatryt at 5:08PM on 04/12/08
waffles/pancakes brownies/strawberry short cake prime rib/lobster
depends on my mood ...
NanaJoie at 5:17PM on 04/12/08
pancakes.. i've always found waffles too dry.
MadelynRodriguez at 5:34PM on 04/12/08
*karen.... good god! do you love your waffles or what?
*perky...five days! wow, that's not good.
Someone please explain the eggs on top of the pancakes, my husband does it and I don't get it.
evilchefmom at 5:36PM on 04/12/08
i defer to mitch hedburg, r.i.p., who once noted that pancakes are something you always get excited about, but by the time you get to the middle, you're just sick of 'em. i like pancakes when they have lots of things in them (my parents used to take us to brunch at a restaurant that had twenty-five different kinds of pancakes!) and i like to make them at home with bananas and walnuts (no waffle-maker, sadly). but given a choice, i think i'd always rather eat waffles. especially from the wafles and dinges cart (waflesanddinges.com). also: fried chicken and waffles at roscoe's...holla!
billyburgwife at 6:12PM on 04/12/08
waffles with raspberry jam. yum.
caley at 7:23PM on 04/12/08
I don't care for western breakfast food, but I do love Belgian waffles and get them once every few months at the cafeteria at work. They are made to order - $3.50 buys two huuuge waffles and 2 strips of turkey bacon. The only bad thing is that they load it up with waaay too much fruit (peaches, spiced apples, or cherries) and (fresh) whipped topping, even when I say, "just a wee bit, please."
While I do like pancakes, mainly for the syrup (mmm butter pecan), for some odd reason they leave an odd feeling on my tongue after I've finished eating, like it's been scrubbed. It's the same funky feeling I get when eating raw spinach, which is why I never eat spinach raw.
Cassaendra at 7:26PM on 04/12/08
Given a choice, waffles everytime.
Mmmmmmmmm!
I have got to buy a waffle iron! I think someone posted something about waffle irons a couple of months ago.
wookie at 7:28PM on 04/12/08
I've had a Vitantonio Premier Belgian Waffle Machine which has perfromed flawlessly for many years.
I'd also like to mention Granny Bunt Baking Mixes. The company is a non-profit commercial supplier that trains and employs disabled persons. They're distributed primarily through USDA Programs, but you can purchase direct via internet.
Their mix makes THE GREATEST WAFFLES!
srhcb at 8:21PM on 04/12/08
@evilchefmom: I think it's the creamy yolk over the pancake that gets me every time, but whenever I make my pancakes (about once a month, sadly), I usually put garam masala and cayenne pepper, as well as diced tomatoes and onions in my pancakes. Two of those, each with an egg over easy, is brunchfast heaven.
deepitbhatia at 8:36PM on 04/12/08
again, to credit mitch hedburg
a waffle is like a pancake with a syrup trap.
waffles everytime.
listener at 9:32PM on 04/12/08
As a breakfast food, I like neither. As a tasty lunch, dinner or dessert, Belgium waffles with fresh sliced strawberries and real whipped cream. Every once in a while I'll make apple pancake cake (apples, butter, brown sugar sauted in an 8-inch omelette pan. Throw in enough pancake batter for 6 regular pancakes, mixed with a bit of vanilla and cinnamon. Bake in 350 oven until done. Flip pancake on plate as you would an upside down cake. Serve warm. This as dessert when I'm in love.
chisai at 3:54AM on 04/13/08
both are great!
wizzie at 5:48AM on 04/13/08
Waffles! usually savory, I wonder about adding Garham Masala, Deep that sounds really good. Thanks for the idea ;)
huney_bumper at 8:49AM on 04/13/08
When I'm feeling crusty and multi-dimensional, waffles. When I am feeling uncomplicated and more "go with the flow," pancakes. :D
Way too much introspection today!
chiff0nade at 11:37AM on 04/13/08
Unless it's a Belgium waffle, I'll choose waffles every time. Their crispness is the best. I actually made my first one from scratch today. I used Cook's Illustrated's recipe and it was wonderful -- so light and fluffy. I no longer miss The Waffle House.
And for those who haven't tried chicken and waffles, you're missing out. I'll post about it tomorrow.
NuJoi at 3:56PM on 04/13/08
waffles, no doubt
with strawberries and whipped cream
or with syrup is good

I always feel crusty and multi-dimensional.

Karen - that made me laugh out loud!
CookiePie at 4:42PM on 04/13/08
There's no other way it could be, Cookie Pie - with a crusty grandmother and a multi-dimensional mother. The recipe tells.
I am also toothsome.
Now I do realize that foodies do not like the word "toothsome" but that's not my problem. Not mine nor any of the toothsome waffles in the world.
It can not be imagined, really - a "toothsome" pancake. It simply does not work.
Waffles rule.
Karen Resta at 6:22PM on 04/13/08
waffles for me, too. i like crispy.
when i was traveling in holland and belgium i basically lived on waffles from street carts, with the occasional bag of frites for variety.
cybercita at 7:09PM on 04/13/08
RE: karen: foodies do not like the word "toothsome"
What's not to like?
tooth·some (tthsm)
adj.
1. Delicious; luscious
2. Pleasant; attractive
3. Sexually attractive or exciting.

Pancakes....with pure maple syrup....I love living in WNY....just picked up some fresh syrup for the season!
mepolo at 8:40PM on 04/13/08
90% of the time I'll go for waffles, but every once in a while I need a good batch of pancakes. But I'm better at making waffles than pancakes....
I really want a belgian waffle iron, instead of the thinner one I have, but since I only make waffles every couple months, I can't justify it.
cmtigger at 10:16PM on 04/13/08
srhcb - I don't know what's not to like but toothsome is one of the top words that shows up when wordyfoodies start rating foodwords. I like it - it reminds me of Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, but I've heard rants about the word that sound as if there are people who would like to shackle it to an IHOP menu and toss it into the deep blue (where obviously the mere thought of the caloric weight on that IHOP menu would sink it to the bottom of the ocean forever).
I'm trying to be nice this morning so have found some pancakes I do like: Crepes, which have pulled themselves out of the usual pancake mold, shaped themselves into a bearable lightness of being then tossed on some elegance; and ableskivers - which always remind me of cute little round robins.
I also like the pancakes Mu Shu Pork is folded into. :)
Karen Resta at 8:18AM on 04/14/08
Oooh this is tough! I love both of them, but when it comes down to it...I guess I'm going to go with pancakes. There are so many different kinds and they're just so darn good. Thanks for keeping the JEP spirit alive! I hope that doesn't come across as morbid, I hope she is doing well!

pancakes- spread nutella on half, place sliced strawberries and roll. eat hot dog style!
it's my favorite way to eat crepes also, but i like the extra umph of pancake. mmmm carbs
machellebelle at 11:02AM on 04/18/08
Shall we throw crepes into the mix? :)
They have the pancake taste and those delicate, crispy edges and you can eat them when you're not just in the breakfasting mood/ roll them up with whatever.
I vote crepes for the win. Especially those street vendor ones, yumm.
jazzinx at 11:19AM on 04/18/08
I love to eat both pancakes and waffles. Waffles slightly more than pancakes.
I love making the batter for both- pancakes are so easy, but folding in egg whites for waffles is fun!
BUT. I prefer cooking pancakes strictly for the fact that you can turn out a griddle-full of lovely small fluffy pancakes in the same time it takes to make one or two waffles. Sure you can hold waffles for a little while in the oven but it's not nearly the same as having them hot from the iron. When I make waffles, it's like we all eat our breakfasts seperately and that's not as fun.
