Wacky kitchen inspirations
What odd things have you tried that worked?
Here's my latest: I was planning on baking some bread, not unusual since I bake almost all the bread we use. But when I opened the fridge to grab the jar of yeast, I spied the leftover refried black beans, and thought, "hmmmm, I wonder what that would do in bread?"
And yes, I dumped the beans into the bread dough. And yes, it was a success. The flavor was subtle and I doubt anyone would guess what was added, but it was good.
So -- what crazy things have you done -- by accident or on purpose -- that actually worked out well?

I was sauteeing shrimp (sans garlic) reached for the red pepper flakes and promptly poured cinnamon over the shrimp. Turned out to be a pretty damned good new taste sensation.

I have a friend in Pittsburgh to whom I send care packages all the time. They contain everything from alderwood smoked salt to citrus flavored jellied candies (from the local touristy FL citrus shop).
Last time I sent him a package, I had an inspiration. I made him a scone mix that was savory (1 tbsp. of sugar and no sweet spices) and all he has to add are cubes of ham and cheese. He hasn't made it yet so I have no idea how it will turn out.
I've done savory stuff before like smoked salmon cheesecake for an hors d'oeuvres spread which everyone loved.

I keep a list of all the bizarre inspirations I've had. Some of them I've made, some of them are waiting for the right time. The list is several pages long these days.
I think one of my favorites is tomato-basil waffles topped with a creamy ham béchamel. It was ridiculously good. I'm hoping I get an ice cream maker soon, because I'd like to try my hand at tomato sorbet topped with pancetta and fresh mozzarella.
