Terrible Kitchen Odors
Many kitchen fragrances make us hungry or bring back childhood memories. What about the opposite? Are there cooking odors that make you sick? I saw a show last night where a woman was sued because of odors emanating from her apartment, even though she had gone to herculean effort to prevent bothering her neighbors. That kind of living situation would make an impact (positive or negative) on those who could smell your food. What cooking odors make you run for cover?

When I was a child, I didn't like the smell of liver and onions cooking. I like it now. If cabbage isn't cooked quickly (I steam for a few minutes, then sautee a few more in olive oil or butter - no smell) it gets really stinky. Showing homes most of my life, I found that buyers were usually turned off by a strong smell of curry. Burned anything! My daughter frequently burns popcorn and that smell is hard to get rid of. At least no neighbors can be offended.
PerkyMac at 9:17PM on 04/13/08
omg our landlords are this crazy old couple and i don't know what it is that they cook but the smells from their dinners every night...blech! it's seriously triggered my gag reflex a few times. same thing with the chipotle on sixth avenue in the village...i've never been inside but it releases a smell onto the street that's absolutely poisonous.
i hate the smell of most foods when i'm not eating them, but when i am, then they're delicious!
billyburgwife at 9:32PM on 04/13/08
I forgot the lingering odor of fish. Doesn't bother me when I'm cooking it, but it doesn't want to go away. Have to remove the trash immediately after clean up, too.
I get literally sick from the smell of roasting (burning?) chestnuts.
PerkyMac at 9:37PM on 04/13/08
I'm used to seeing, hearing and smelling new, interesting, and sometimes unpleasant things when I visit my friend on his farm.
Once I was sitting with him in his kitchen, and something in a pot on the stove was giving off an awful stench. When his wife came in I asked what she was cooking.
It was raw wool being boiled to make felt!
srhcb at 10:06PM on 04/13/08
@SB......Even a wet wool coat stinks - I can't even imagine! I'll bet you were glad to discover it was something you wouldn't have to eat..........haha.
A friend of mine used to make wine and took the top off the barrel of a fermenting dandelion wine. I nearly passed out from the stench.
PerkyMac at 10:41PM on 04/13/08
@PM: "I'll bet you were glad to discover it was something you wouldn't have to eat"
Another time I was sitting at their kitchen table having coffee and playing with an odd looking hand tool, which turned out to be a pair of castration pliers!
I asked my friend why in the world they were kept in the kitchen, and he replied, "Better than having them laying around in the bedroom."
srhcb at 11:05PM on 04/13/08
@SB.......never saw the likes! I would have dropped them immediately as my jaw hit the floor. How funny!!!! Something like that would have saved Ms. Bobbit a little time.
I copied the link and I'm going to send them to a particular gentleman friend of mine. Shall I tell him these implements are on my wish list? He'll freak! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I wonder what multi-use Alton would get out of them? They are interesting, to say the least. First photo reminded me of the pliers to remove canning jars. The others might take some thought. Oh my, what dreams I may have tonight (nightmares, more like it). Funny stuff.
PerkyMac at 11:22PM on 04/13/08
The smell in my grandmother's house was indescribable. It was a mixture of rancid grease, overcooked foods (chicken, green beans, fat back, etc), and ash (from a wood cook-stove she insisted on using, even though she had an elecric one). She was also in the habit of not covering food in the refrigerator. The smell was horrendous. Needless to say, I did not eat anything that came from that kitchen. The thought of that smell still turns my stomach.
beth1 at 11:24PM on 04/13/08
@beth1.......it was your post saying you couldn't stand the smell of bananas that inspired me to start this thread. I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience at your grandmother's. I had one who was spoiled and rarely cooked (my mother did all the cooking when we visited) and one who was THE most awesome cook and grandmother in the world. I loved both dearly, but guess where I enjoyed myself more? I am a grandma now and want to create wonderful memories.
PerkyMac at 11:45PM on 04/13/08
@SB.......I knew those shears reminded me of something and it finally came to me.........my pruning shears for tree branches. Just different sizes. Of course a chain saw would.........oh, never mind.
PerkyMac at 11:52PM on 04/13/08
@billlyburgwife, too funny! i gag every time i pass that same chipotle!
cybercita at 11:54PM on 04/13/08
I'm afraid there are quite a few, so here goes:
*fish being cooked (probably, among the worst offenders as far as I'm concerned. Incidentally, I do not eat cooked fish);
*fresh bananas (yet, if I overcome this one long enough, I don't mind bananas in banana nut bread - but the flavour is significantly subtler there, and the texture of bananas is, well, gone);
*overcooked stinky cabbage. I also never cook cabbage for more than a few minutes, Perky. When I first made a vegetable soup with cabbage for my mother-in-law, she was surprised that a) it didn't take me 3 hours to cook it, and b) she could actually taste the vegetables. Now, my mother-in-law is one of those people who eats barely enough to not pass out for fear that she may gain an ounce. But if she comes over and I have this particular soup, she'll always have a bowl.
*cheap balsamic vinegar being reduced - while the end result is syrupy and spectacular, you don't want to plan a visit to a friend round the time she engages in this particular endeavour, trust me on this one!
*beets
*papaya
*ripe cantaloupe
I can't be convinced to take a bite of any of the last three items for the life of me, the smell is way too off putting!
Oh, and microwaved popcorn -- smells absolutely sickening to me, which is probably why I pop my corn in the cast iron pot. OK, I'm done now:-)
brooke29 at 12:01AM on 04/14/08
Potted meat or deviled ham. The very smell of it makes me flee the kitchen. I've never liked the smell, even when I was young.
Canned tuna. I lived and went to school not too far from the Starkist plant in American Samoa. After what I saw and smelt, I never want to eat canned tuna again.
Oily fish like mullet and flounder. Bad childhood memories; even now, I can't stomach fishy fish. Uncooked fish, and fish that doesn't taste strongly of fish (like fresh salmon, tuna, and swordfish) don't bother me.
Zucchini, onions, and celery seed stir fried in a cast iron pan. My mom loved this dish when my brother and I were kids. Luckily, she refrains from it now that we're both adults (I secretly suspect she made it to torture us kids for being monsters).
jenilowrance at 12:52AM on 04/14/08
I can't think of any edible food that disgusts me, but rancid oil and spoiled milk products would top the list of things I don't want to smell when I'm going to someone's house.
dbcurrie at 1:21AM on 04/14/08
Ha. I am glad I am not the only one that can't stand the smell of microwave popcorn smell (mostly at work). It just lingers!
I hate the smell of:
- onions, raw and being cooked
- garlic, raw and cooked
- oven (gas) -- never had a problem until I conceived...I would throw up every time my husband would turn on the oven. The feeling still lingers, but not so violently.
- any rubbish that's been sitting for several hours, like fish, soda, etc.
- cardamom (I love lassi, but I don't care for the smell of cardamom being cooked)
- most coffees when it's being ground and brewed (at home), and esp. when it's been sitting on the burner for HOURS (at work). I love iced coffee, so I have to tolerate the smell of grinding my beans and brewing it. :P
Cassaendra at 7:17AM on 04/14/08
in better times the smell of canned tuna hit my gag reflex everytime. these days just about everything hits that button, especially meats of anykind, in any state from raw to burned and everything in between. but even raw veggies have set me off.
huney_bumper at 7:28AM on 04/14/08
The smell of cooking butter makes me gag. And what goes with that is the even more disgusting smell of microwave popcorn.
Not a fan of fishy odors either, so I never, ever cook fish in my kitchen. Shellfish is fine though.
@huney - that's quite a sensitive nose you've got there. How do you even eat? I feel for you.
chisai at 8:21AM on 04/14/08
@PerkyMac - I live in a small studio apartment and I have to have every fan in the place running when I fry fish.
BITTER at 8:57AM on 04/14/08
@huney......you're not pregnant? I'm keeping you in my prayers sweetie.
PerkyMac at 9:04AM on 04/14/08
Definitely fish. I've always hated fish but when I was younger my parents cooked it a lot - and every other night in the summer at our summer house. BLECH.
Also I LOVE brussels sprout, but have to keep a window wide open and a fan going whenever I cook them. The other night it was too cold to open the window for long when I made them, and I literally almost got sick, I had to leave my apartment!
embolini9 at 9:05AM on 04/14/08
@embolini9........do you roast your brussel sprouts? I haven't noticed any particular disturbing odor, but possibly it doesn't bother me. I used to steam mine, but since I first tried roasting, I've never looked back.
PerkyMac at 9:21AM on 04/14/08
oh no guys, i think i've smelled the one of the worst things in the world cooking and that is "chitlins", i don't even know if i spelled it right. i was 10 and i went into a carry out in washington d.c. and they had them boiling on a stove. right back out the door i remember going with my parents. AWFUL, AWFUL SMELL!!!!!
jobug_tincher at 9:23AM on 04/14/08
@SB.....I sent your link. He thought it was a "come on". MEN! ;)
PerkyMac at 9:30AM on 04/14/08
@Cassaendra, here's another vote for coffee tha's been sitting on the burner all day. Yuck! I also hate the smell of those fakey-fakey flavored coffees. It just permeates everything.
I hate the way the house smells the day after frying food. That smell clings pretty bad, too. Usually only happens once a year, after making latkes. But if we could arrange for Hanukkah to be in a warmer month so I could open all the windows, I'd be ok with that.
The last one that really, really drives me nuts is when people light heavily scented candles to cover their cooking smells. I would really rather smell the food. And I'm not totally sure here, but it might be a sin to try to cover the smell of homemade tomato sauce and lasagna baking with "honeydew mango mist."
I'm just sayin'
Kerosena at 9:36AM on 04/14/08
I've found a great way to eliminate garbage food odors (aside from the garbage disposal) by, and I know you'll all think this is weird, putting bones, shells, packaging from meats and fish in a bag in the freezer. No more smelly garbage and it doesn't stink up the freezer either.
Yes, I am strange. Keep most of my financial records in the dishwasher.
bessfour at 9:40AM on 04/14/08
@bessfour......do you buy a new freezer when that one is full? Sorry, couldn't resist. I have once a week pick-up and in the summer, it can get nasty to open the can to add another bag.
If you don't use your dishwasher, that might also be a great hiding place for valuables. I'll bet most thiefs would look in the freezer first and get a huge shock!
PerkyMac at 9:48AM on 04/14/08
PerkyMac...LOL
bessfour at 9:52AM on 04/14/08
@PerkyMac - I fry them. I think the combination of the sprouts and the frying is what does it - even though they're delicious (a little olive oil, salt and pepper, and afterwards some grated romano cheese, MMM!) Sigh, I guess that's the price we pay.
embolini9 at 10:30AM on 04/14/08
I agree with microwave popcorn. Someone at work used to make this vile "corn on the cob" variety and one morning, when I was feeling a bit tender, it actually triggered my gag reflex.
Liqours like rum and brandy also do it for me.
donnadw at 10:45AM on 04/14/08
thanks Perky but NO Not preggers Thank God! chemo tends to make your sense of smell more pronounced so I still manage to eat and I'm thankful everyday I wake up with a stuffy nose ;)
huney_bumper at 10:52AM on 04/14/08
Re stashing the bones and stuff from meat in the freezer, my mom has been doing that for years - mainly because she gets animals in her garbage cans. But in summer, I do the same thing because ANY strong smell of garbage makes me vomit, literally. I have a very sensitive gag reflex.....
I'm with hating the smell of microwave popcorn - I worked in an office once where someone incinerated a bag of it (the fire dept was called - she was a tad clueless) and the odour was appalling. Another bad one - burnt liver. A friend once picked me up in her car and I hopped in and just about lost it - she had just taken their living room curtains to the cleaners after her mother forgot a pan of liver on the stove and went out. Thankfully there was no major fire but the entire place reeked.
We purchased an outdoor fryer simply to keep the smell of fried fish and other foods out of our house. But to this day, my husband has to take the garbage out - winter or summer!
Maureen at 10:57AM on 04/14/08
@huney........that was my fear. Hope you don't have too many treatments left. I had already started to pray that you'd be healed. We're here for you!
PerkyMac at 11:06AM on 04/14/08
@Kerosena: I hate that too. I mean, why cover up cooking smells-unless it's burnt (which makes matter worse IMO)? If you ask me, I think Lasagna should be a scented candle...:) Love my Italian food!
Smells that turn me off:
Anything burnt-in the oven or microwave
Fried Food-you can't get rid of the smell (my SO's friend likes to fry food over our place-the smell is just terrible)
Broccoli Rabe and Garlic-love to eat it, but it is god awful smelling while being cooked
Cabbage-enough said
Asparagus-makes me want to hurl on the spot
Whatever the people beneath me in my first apartment would cook-I did not think any human could consume whatever was being concocted. It was some Indian dish they were a fan of. Just awful
Ok, I'm done now.
Butrflygirly at 11:26AM on 04/14/08
@huney.... I'm terribly sorry. Treatment can be a bitch. A friend's father had the same reaction when he when thru chemo. It lightened way up when the treatment stopped.
chisai at 11:56AM on 04/14/08
Thanks guys, no biggie really. I have recomended this site to a number of ppl to help stimulate their appetite, and lift their spirits;) ya'll are a ray of sunshine in a gloomy day ;) thanxs
huney_bumper at 12:06PM on 04/14/08
@huney-our thoughts are with you! Hope the chemo helps heal you real quick- too bad it has to suck so much in the process!
bisbee at 12:16PM on 04/14/08
@huney: completely pressed post comment before I was able to add my thoughts for you.
I've seen too many people I know go thru that treatment. I hope you have more good days than bad. My thoughts and prayers are with you for a full recovery. I'm glad you are able to find something to add some light to your days! Humor and things to look forward to go a long way...Take care!
Butrflygirly at 12:24PM on 04/14/08
@huney - praying for your full and speedy recovery. And hope that you have a stuffy nose till the end of your treatment:-).
brooke29 at 12:25PM on 04/14/08
@brooke29........way to go! Wishing her a stuffy nose! I hope that gave huney a big laugh like it did me.
I'll agree with those who hate the smell of microwave popcorn. I hate the taste, the tongue feel - everything about it.
I wish I had a garbage disposal. I'm going to start freezing the smelly stuff too @bessfour - until garbage eve (night before pick-up).
PerkyMac at 12:42PM on 04/14/08
I'm with the microwave popcorn group too...what an awful smell.
I also don't like the smell of boiled cabbage....too many memories of bland ham & cabbage dinners growing up!
huney....keep your chin up....good luck through the rest of your treatment!
mepolo at 2:08PM on 04/14/08
I once had a roommate that cooked fish in her bedroom on a george foreman grill.
My grandmother had a roommate who had a side of pork (preserved, I believe) hanging in their closet. Everything smelled like ham.
sarahj at 3:15PM on 04/14/08
Occasionally on a Sunday morning I will make lox, eggs & onions and stink up the house for the whole day. Or better yet, kippers & onions. My partner thinks it's all vile and disgusting but I love it...brings back memories of my grandmother.
RichardCrystal at 3:59PM on 04/14/08
ok ya'll can hang me now, but about micro popcorn, I detest it unless its burned I know I know, but I love the taste of burned micro popcorn. the smell not so much. I'm gonna hide in the corner now ;)
huney_bumper at 4:01PM on 04/14/08
@huney.......my daughter does the same thing, and I swear it's on purpose although she never admits it! p.s. she came out on the other side of what you're going through with flying colors. You have lots in common!
PerkyMac at 4:12PM on 04/14/08
@ huney: Proud of you for coming clean about the burnt popcorn. I've made a few confessions here myself.
Keep on fighting the good fight!
Kerosena at 4:13PM on 04/14/08
@RichardCrystal......are kippers the same as the canned kipper snacks? My mother and I loved them and ate them straight from the can or made sandwiches with them. We liked them packed in mustard - like sardines. Rest of the family ran for cover. Do you eat them with raw onions?
PerkyMac at 4:21PM on 04/14/08
@PerkyMac: Kippers are split, cold-smoked herring. Or, alternatively, a super-cute puppy with an adorable vocabulary. He says things like "I'm going to draw a bath," which were especially cute when repeated by my baby brother.
sarahj at 5:17PM on 04/14/08
only ONE smell bothers me......hazelnut coffee........i have a really strong gag reflex but that'll do it every time...lol
onepercent99 at 6:19PM on 04/14/08
I once had a putrid smell and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Turned out to be russet potatoes that fell in the back of the pantry and turned to a black liquid. Oh so nasty. At least it wasn't the dead animal I expected to find somewhere, even though I have no animals.
PerkyMac at 10:26PM on 04/14/08
i'm with you guys on these:
microwave popcorn. eeeew!
hazelnut flavored coffee. why, why, why????
okra. especially canned, which my father used to like to eat. blech.
once i spent christmas with some friends who were cooking chitlins. i don't pull out the jewish card very often, but i used it as excuse not to eat them... the smell was PUTRID!!!
cybercita at 10:51PM on 04/14/08
Not really a gag reflex, but I absolutely HATE the smell of the fake hickory smoke scent that you'll find in some bottled BBQ sauces. It gives me a headachy feeling. If I open a bottle of sauce and I smell that odor, that's the end of the sauce for me.
Actual hickory smoke is okay, though.
dbcurrie at 1:31AM on 04/15/08
OMG Perky I had the same thing happen with the tater, and you are SO right! I thought something died in the back of my pantry! It took scrubbing three times with bleach before I couldnt smell it anymore and then I think it was more the bleach fumes than anything else. I also have to agree with the coffee suggestion, any flavored coffee smells nasty to me, also I forgot the biggie, canned asparagus! My mom used to eat that mushy nasty stuff on toast, it always made me feel sick, and convinced me I hated asparagus at least until I tried the real stuff.
huney_bumper at 7:29AM on 04/15/08
I can't believe potatoes can smell so...fishy.
Bleech. I just ate too...
Cassaendra at 1:05PM on 04/15/08
I have a new one, also a puzzle. A friend brought me a huge bag of lemons from Costco and I didn't have room in the fridge (he brought me a ton of produce), so I left them in the bag on the counter for 2 days. I could see the perfect lemons in front, but the plastic at the back was not see-through. Three lemons had turned to smelly green dust! Mystery smell solved. There was only one other that I had to cut off part of the rind, but I scrubbed all the rest, and put them in a bowl in the fridge. I hope they don't freeze - no room in the crisper.
I have a question for you. Would you zest lemons that had been exposed to that green dust? Should I spray them with a bleach solution and rinse? Should I trash them? What would you do?
PerkyMac at 11:29PM on 04/16/08
