Tasty vegan food in NYC, on the cheap

I'll be travelling to NYC soon, and am curious where one can find tasty vegan chow? Even better would be tasty vegan chow that isn't expensive.

puck. wonderful. thai.
babycakes. vegan baked goods.

sorry! it's pukk with two k's. on first avenue and east houston.

Actually, Pukk is on 1st ave between 4th and 5th streets. I highly recommend it - it's delicious, and completely vegan, to boot. (Hooray for Thai food without fish sauce!)

There are really good South Indian vegetarian restaurants on Lexington Ave between 26th and 28th streets – I highly recommend Pongal and Saravanaas. They’re not strictly vegan (there are a few things that have yogurt in them), but they are for the most part. However, you might want to call them to make sure they don’t use ghee (many of them use vegetable oil in place of ghee, but I’m not 100% sure of this).

There’s also Kate’s Joint in the East Village (Ave B on the corner of 4th) – good vegetarian comfort food that can be veganized.

i love kate's! even my most carnivorous friends are happy to go there with me. the area around nyu has a lot of vegetarian/vegan places too...red bamboo on west fourth and sixth avenue is really great vegetarian/vegan soul food (and a decent lunch special), sacred chow (i forget the streets but it's only a few blocks away) has an amazing vegan reuben (and lots of other sandwiches and a whole tapas menu - also has a good lunch special). quantum leap (there's one on thompson between third street and bleeker and another on first ave and twelfth) is really good, but they do put fish sauce in some of their dishes (like the pad thai) so you just have to check first (i'm a huge fan of their vegan sandwiches and milkshakes, and they've got some amazing dairy-free pies). mighty diamond just opened in williamsburg (take the L train to graham) - carribean style vegan food that's inexpensive, and they've got a backyard that's now open for summer! hope this helps and have a great trip!

oh! i can't believe i forgot: buddha bodhai is an all vegan chinese place in chinatown and they have amazing dim sum - get the barbecued "pork" buns - and it's even cheaper than "regular" dim sum and sooo tasty!

@billyburgwife, what's the address for the dim sum place? I'd love to try it.

Now that I'm thinking of vegan food, I have to recommend the Hummus Place. Some dishes have optional egg, but it's avoidable. They have the best hummus I've ever eaten, and the atmosphere is somehow both calm and communal. There are three locations, one on St. Mark's near Ave A, one on MacDougal St near Bleecker, and one on Amsterdam Ave near 74th st. (The St. Marks is my favorite.)

@ butterface: ohh i think it's on mott street (i'm reasonably certain)...in very central manhattan-chinatown location...i know we passed the park on the way there, and it's a few blocks away from jing fong (the other dim sum place we go to, but not vegan)...bah of course i forget the location of the restaurant when i respond to a post asking where to find food :( my husband's promised to take me there after my finals are over though so if i can figure it out i'll let you know :)
