starting a food blog ........

.....i'm an assistant meat manager at a large grocery store and i want to start a food blog where i can give people tips on how to cook meat and also how to save $ when they're shopping for meat an i'm tryin to think of a catchy name for my blog....any ideas?

86 Comments:

This is not cute or subtle but how about "Ask the Butcher"?

Hmmm well whats your first name?

"Meaty Advice"
"Meaty Frugality"
"The Cutting Edge"
"The Cleaving Edge"
"The Fatted Calf"
"Running of the Bull"
"Tongues, Butts, and Pig Fat"
"From the (Beef) Heart"

Anyway, there's a start ...

"What's Your Cut?"
"Choice Selections"
Prime Picks"
"A Cut Above the Rest"
"A Butcher's Blog"

Out of all the previous suggestions, I think I would be most interested in A Butcher's Blog. It's simple and says exactly what it is, and it's immediately unique because, hey, not so many butcher's blogs out there.

@bodaciousgirl....my name's Matt......ok....thanks for the ideas....so far i like Tongues...Butts and Pig Fat and A Butchers Blog.....keep the ideas coming......also if i start this blog what would you like to read about?....thanks again !!!

'The Butcher Block'

I think it's a great idea to provide money-saving tips, Matt.

For beginners who might be doing a search and wind up at your blog, having photos of different cuts of meat would be good. Explanations of which cuts are good for braising, roasting, stir-frying, etc. would be beneficial, too. Give a demonstration (photo or video) of how to cut up a whole chicken, how to butterfly shrimp, or how to prepare a turkey for roasting, etc. It's basic stuff, sure, but a lot of people out there have to start somewhere in learning these things and it might as well be your blog.

A lot of people don't ever talk to the butcher. Instead, they go to the meat counter at the local grocery and pick up the pre-cut, pre-packaged items without really thinking much about it. So...let people know how a butcher can customize meat purchases and what a customer can ask for.

Give information on how to pick out the best and freshest products and how to look for "bad" product.

If you're inclined to do so, show the journey of how a typical steak (for example) gets from the cow in the pasture to the consumer's plate. That might be too much information for a lot of people but it's interesting to others.

Give freshness guidelines...how long you can store meat products in the fridge and in the freezer along with the best ways to prepare meat for freezing.

And recipes are always great. Show us how a butcher cooks and tell us what you think are the biggest and most common mistakes that people make in cooking different cuts.

Good luck with your blog if you pursue it!

Don't forget to devote an entry every once in a while to answering questions.
Good luck from someone who just started their own food blog...

"Wrestling Meat to the Matt"

Nah, never mind, forget that one ...

"Matt the Knife"

Hmm, I dunno ...

"The Matted Butcher"

ewwwwww ...

I agree: "A Butcher's Blog"!

"The Butcher's' Blog" or "The Cutting Board"

Matt, I have a question for you. My grocery store has a sign saying something to the effect of "please ask us to trim your meat to your specifications - we are always happy to help!"... Only when I asked to get a tenderloin trimmed of the silverskin before taking it home, the butcher acted sort of insulted. Is there a way to ask for additional trimming without it being taken the wrong way?
.

How about "It's a Caulfat Life" or

"Headcheese is Where It Ends" or

"Marrow Me"

I did a
search for butchers blogs and your right - not many at all.

I asked for your name because I thought you could use it in your title - but Matt's Meat sounds like a blog of a different nature...

I like a Butcher's Blog or how about Matt the Butcher. Your blog name doesn't have to have the word blog in it - it is obvious when people get to it what it is.

Need help with design of it? Let me know. It's half what I do.

"Some Bones About It"
"Gettin' Meaty Wid It"
"The Butcher's Block"
"Charcutamilitude"
"Losing My Marbling"

oops, I defer "The Butcher's Block" to being the suggestion of MelsDiner. :-D

"In a Pigs Eye"

"Bandsaws, Bellyfat, and Bacon"

"This Cow was Bound for Glory"

"Bull-Hockey"
"Featherbrains and Cowhide"
"Veggies Need Not Apply"
"The Informative Meathead"
"Breaking Through the Bull"
"How Bacon Goes with Everything"
"Milking My Cow Sense"

@lunapiercook & karenresta.....you guys are KILLIN me here...laffin out loud n my wife's givin me strange looks....lol....@bodaciousgirl....lmao....matts meat dont quite sound right...does it???...@texasdeb....the butcher was probably either lazy or you challenged him to something he knew nothing about...lol.....i personally love when "foodies" ask for something special.....an love talkin to foodies about preparation an stuff.... the customers that bother me are the ones that pick up a tough steak like a chuck steak and ask me if its good on the grill, when i tell them that it's probably not they want to argue with me

onepercent99, I love your blog already.
That line about trying to argue you into somehow making all steaks equal and also grill-able is beautiful. :)

LunaPierCook obviously has meat on his mind more than I do, but I'll continue to try to find more names.

There's

"Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thymus"

"My Tenderloin Memories"

"I Cryovac the Whole Night Through"

"Got Tongue?"

"Mission: Meat!"
"Diners, Drive-Ins and Sirloin"
"The Galloping Tenderloin"
"The Essence of Proteins"
"The Naked Butcher"

Karen, odd how we came up with something having to do with tenderloin almost at the same thyme. ;-)

my friends at work would never lat me live down "TheNaked Butcher"....lmao

Sorry, I've got no name ideas for you, (and how could I possibly compete with what has already been suggested?) but one thing I'm always curious about is what cuts have multiple names. Very confusing if you shop at different stores.

... naked butchah ... must keep items out frum cleavah ...

Here's a question, Matt: Are ya' good yet or do we need to keep going? Cuz ya' know we can ...

@luna....KEEP IT GOING....cant remember laffin so much....
@sarajane...a lot of cuts have different names.....just depends what part of the country you shop in.....i'll be glad to answer any specific questions tho.....email is onepercent99@hotmail.com....

"Tripe is Not an Option"

"Tips on Tendons"

"Fit to Be Spatchcocked"

"Marbled and Hung"

onepercent99, I am not nearly creative enough to help as much as some of the folks on this thread. I just want to say that I think your blog sounds like a great idea, and would be super-helpful for folks like me that aren't all that experienced with meats - I usually stick with the safe/basics that I know and would love to learn more and venture outside - also, money-saving tips when it comes to meat are a GREAT idea. (congrats again, hehe!). Keep us posted if you do start one - I'll definitely visit often!

One last one. No, two. My mind is turning into scrapple.

"My Brain on Ballontine"

"Lights; Livers: ACTION!"

"Livers and Thymus and Bulls, Oh My!"

"The Gizzard of Ox"

"Go Ahead and Grill Me"

"Cold Shoulders and Rumps Galore"

"Custom Cut-Ups"

Karen and Luna, please don't stop, this is so hilarious. So far my favorites are:
"Go Ahead and Grill Me," "Losing My Marbling," and "Marrow Me."

I love this idea! And whenever you do get the blog up and running, please let us all know!!! And I'd like to put my vote in for "Butcher's Blog," too!

How about:

"All About Meat"
"What's Your Beef?"
"Bad Meat Good Meat"
"All That Meat Can Offer"
"Meet Your Meat"
"The Beef on Beef" or "The Beef on Meat"

and from CSFont

"Savings and Lion"

.........or Savings and Loin?

Maybe "Home on the Loin"?

"Nothing Fishy"

"Chop ... Chop ... Moose!"

Ooops! That last one was supposed to be

"Savings and Loin"

!!!

I mean Loin - Bad Typo!

Or you could go the Meat = any word you want. Like if you like, say Neil Young:
Everybody Knows This is Meat, After the Meat Roast. On The Meat, Tonight's the Meat. Meat Never Sleeps or Roast Never Sleeps, Landing on Meat, This Meat's for You, Harvest Meat, Are you Meat?, Prairie Meat, Living with Meat.

I think you get the meat, I mean idea.

Neil Young Discography

this is so fun.......gettin a lottalaffs here...ok.....say i open my own meat shop......i got this great slogan for it......but i have to apologise in case i offend any1...."Matt's Meats....you can beat my prices......but you can't beat my meat !!!!......whaddaya think???

With Cleaver Go I

"Lardy Lardy It's a Party"

"This Chine is Your Chine, That Chine is My Chine"

Whoa, someone's having a good time!

Come to think of it, I'd read a blog of suggestions for a meat blog.

Ok, here we go, I asked Matt who is fave singer was and the answer was Harry Chapin, so this is what I came up with for him:

“Sunday Morning Meat”
“A Better Meat To Be”
“Cat’s in the Meat” or “Meat’s in the Cradle”
“Meat is Red”
“Mr. Meat”

“Victuals & Bovine” (I had a little help from a thesaurus for that one, Victual is pronounced ‘vittle’, meaning something fit to eat, and you know what a bovine is. This is a take from the album Verities & Balderdash which I’m sure you have heard of.)

Here is the definition page for Victual click on the little speaker icon next to the word.

@Matt, I've actually seen that slogan numerous times over the years. It seems to work until someone complains!

Slept on this for a bit, so ...

"Chewing the Phat"
"Fat's in the Cradle"
"Meating with Matt"
"Stuffing Your Sausage"
"The Butcher of [wherever you are]"
"The Connective Tissue"
"Along the Flanks"
"Roasting Rumps with Matt"
"The Lean Two" [if there's someone blogging with you]
"Rapping It In Bacon"

Maybe I should have slept longer ... ;-)

I just skimmed the suggestions, but I like "The Butcher's Blog," "Matt's Meats" and "Mr. Meat."

Please pardon me if these are duplicates:
Matt the Butcher
Matt on Meats
Meet Matt's Meats
More Meat with Matt

"Leave No Kidney Behind"

"One Man's Bandsaw and Butts"

"Carcasses and Plastic Wrap: A Journey"

Or there's always "My Name is not Chuck and No You Can't Grill That". :)

Or on a more serious note "A Butchers Book of Days".

"Talkin' T-Bones"

"Le Chat Viande"

"Grilling the Butcher"

"The Creative Meatery"

"The Care and Feeding of Your Meat"

Ooo ... KR, I like that one ...

MY NAME IS NOT CHUCK
... and no, you can't grill that.

Got a good funkiness to it.

Hi Matt....I'm not going to add a title....you have so many great ones already! Good luck with the blog...I can't wait to check it out.
I was hoping you'd weigh in about my brisket question on another thread.
thanks!

Hey Matt, I don't even eat meat and I'm fascinated with this blog idea! I can't wait till you get started and I hope you'll come back and leave the link. Good luck!

How about "Keeping My Thumb on the Scale?"

- Make sure to check the domain name's availability. There is no point getting to excited about a name, if somebody else is already using it.

- If the name you want is already registered, check to see if there's a developed website, or just a parking page, or nothing (dead page).

- If there's already a developed website at the address -- it's time to move on and find another name. The odds of the person selling their baby for any type of 'realistic' dollar amount is very small. And you can't blame them.

- If you find a parking page, or a dead page, then it's time to do a whois lookup to find and contact the owner. I recommend using www.DomainTools.com but there are plenty of whois sites you can use.

- Send a SIMPLE, SHORT message to the owner, and make sure to include something like... "TheDomain.com for sale? Please reply." .... in the subject line. This will catch the attention of the domain owner, and show it's not spam.

- Keep it simple. Chances are you aren't Donald Trump and neither is the other guy. I had luck purchasing 2 domains with this exact letter....

-------------------------------------------

Hello. :)

Would you please consider selling me this domain name?

I can send $XXX cash, immediately via PayPal. I am a verified member and can promise a quick easy transaction.

Thank you for any reply.

Good luck finding your name. I hope you get something you are happy with.

Butcher's Wrap/Rap

@FFC, If he's just throwing a blog on wordpress.com or Blogger, getting even close to a decent domain name is simple. Still, SteamyKitchen was there for a while until she bought steamykitchen.com. It really depends on how things turn out for him.

OMG--I haven't seen so many food puns in one place, ever! And my dog thinks I'm crazy because of all the guffaws!

Anywho--my two cents follow.

Carniverous Habit
Carnivore's Corner

Despite all the really funny suggestions, I liked the Butcher's Blog the best. You could use some of the funnier ones as a subtitle or a tagline or the alternate name or the headings for some of your posts.

Like for your bio: Grilling the Butcher
For recipes: Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thymus
For links to others: The Connective Tissue
Photo Archives: Lights, Livers, ACTION! (featuring your carving technique or deboning step by step pics.)

(Those listed were not necessarily the funniest, just the ones that I could come up with a category)

Good luck with your blog. I look forward to your launch!

Now this is what is SOOOOOOO great about fellow food bloggers. Look at all the suggestions, commentary and creative juices flowing all over the place. Where else would one find this kind of LOVE, SHARING and SUPPORT. Best of luck with your blog. I suggest that you tenderly marinate it with inspiration, add color and flavor and present it with lots of love.

Mark

If there were a vote on the favorite from the suggestions so far, I'd have to go with LunaPierCook's:

Grilling the Butcher

(I have a really naughty one in mind if you were a female ... it's the possessive form of a name of a character in a 60's TV show and that's all I'm going to say......haha.)

"Where else would one find this kind of LOVE, SHARING and SUPPORT."

Oh, PTHTHTHTHTHTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!

;-)

"The Connected Butcher"
"Red is the meat ... Pink is my finger ..."
"Butchering by Stubby"

Carnivore Cravings

Having pretty much run out of ideas for what a butcher's blog should be named, ideas are now springing to mind as to what a butcher's blog should not be named.

I would not suggest using
"An Embarrassment of Stitches".

:(

Similarly ...

"The Smelly Butcher"
"Bust My Chops"
"Bull Testicles for Dinner"

Leave it to Cleaver
Meat of the Matter

"Lovely Matthew, Meater Maid"

[LPC wonders if that's a little too much ...]

Stop & Chop
Swap Meat
Choprite
The Rolling Bones
crafty carnivore
Glad to meat you
Meat and greet

Good luck, and let us know the outcome!!

i really like "the galloping tenderloin."

or how about:

Beef is the New Black
The Butcher Diaries
I Brake for Beef
You Can't Beat This Meat

I think "A Butcher's Blog" is the perfect name for the content you intend to share. The local butchers in a family run grocery store where I live are my most valuable resource. I love MelsDiner's suggestion of showing us how a butcher cooks along with the best cuts of meat to use for a specific cooking method.

abutchersblog.com is currently available.... so register it asap and become the pioneer in butcher blogging. Fantastic idea & good luck!

You should keep it simple, but make known who you are and what you're blogging about.

How about "Matt on Meat"?

@gibson and anyone else that would like to help me here....where can i register that name?...thanks

I also like "A Butcher's Blog" the best, but if you go w/"The Butcher's Block", how about "On the Butcher's Block"?

@onepercent99 ... I use godaddy.com for domain registrations and hosting. They also have tools for installing WordPress as your blog right there in the admin tools. Best service I've been able to find. Throw me an email if you'd like more info: dave(at)micuisine.com

I also highly recommend godaddy.com.

Nobody asked me, but if you ever get to be a star on the Food Network you ought to be called "Matt the Knife" as suggested above.

I see a lot of "votes" for A/The Butcher's Blog. But I kind of hate it. It's way too typical. IMHO, I think you should pick something that is a bit unusual/catchy, but not way out there.

"Matt the Knife" is a good one. Nice going!

And that would be another good topic for a butcher's blog: knives.

Some of those name are pretty awesome. I like the idea of keeping a simple but catchy name, nothing too silly.
As for the possible content:
I don't eat meat, but my boyfriend, who knows nothing about cooking or food or meat, does. I try to teach him what I know to make him more adept to cooking meat, but one area I can't really help him in is buying the stuff or figuring out what to do with different cuts. I think it would be helpful to someone like him to see some section where the subject is catagorized by cut. Perhaps including recipes and techniques for each.
Perhaps keep at least some of it simple and geared toward people who don't spend too much on groceries (like my boyfriend).
Good luck!

Clever Cleaver

Clever Clraver Comments

Matt's not been in here in a couple days, but it looks as though it's going to be "A Butcher's Blog". Yeah, he's pretty jazzed about getting it going!

Happy for him, but don't like the name. The Butcher's Block is better than that. There were so many great suggestions! One more:
