Sriracha and Ketchup!

Ok, ok, before you judge- I'm sure WE ALL have strange things we like to snack on. I love to cook and often cook some pretty elaborate meals, but I sometimes find myself eating some pretty strange things. This is sacrilegious, especially given the fact that I'm Mexican, but I ever since I was a kid I've liked to dip homemade quesadillas in ketchup. It's like a comfort food. Whe I'm out at a Mexican restaurant I'll use salsa, but here at home it's ketchup. Lately, I've become obsessed with dipping quesadillas in a mixutre of ketchup and sriracha! It's my new passion. I can dip anything in this mixture and love it. I'm so convinced of the wonderful flavor combination that I'm considering bottling the stuff! Well, not for mass consumption, but I was wondering if anyone would know if there could be some adverse effects from mixing these two products and keeping a squeeze bottle of it on hand. I'm not afraid of any kind of chemical reaction, I'm just concerned that one flavor may do something horrible to the other flavor after being bottled up together for a few days. Any thoughts?

just keep it in the fridge.....i LOVE ketchup and sirracha with fried chicken livers !!!!

I can't imagine it would be a problem. At a restaurant in San Jose, CA (I don't remember which one, it was a "just okay" Japanese-style lounge-type place) they make a "house sauce" that is sriracha and catsup and serve it with fries and as their bbq style dipping sauce

I LOOOOOVE sriracha. With anything. Including ketchup!

And I don't think anything would happen if you pre-mix. All the vinegar in both of those should keep everything fine and dandy.

I can't see a problem here. By the way, have you tried sriracha on popcorn?

You know, PumpkinBear, I never thought of doing that, and now I wonder why I hadn't. I love sriracha, I love ketchup. Sounds like a match made in heaven. I can't see any reason why combining them would be a problem. I don't refrigerate either one of them (is that bad?), because the last thing I want on my fries is cold ketchup. Fries, which I am sure would be AWESOME with the mix. Which I kinda have to go and do now.

You rock, girl.

whispering.........what is sriracha?

I refrigerate opened ketchup. Not necessary? I think it says to on the bottle? I'll have to look.

@Perky - Sriracha is a hot chile sauce that I think is originally of Thai origin (somebody correct me if I have the country wrong). It can be found in most grocery stores and definitely in all Asian groceries. It's also called 'rooster sauce' by some folks because of the rooster logo on the bottle.

@perky, it does say to refrigerate... but it actually isn't necessary...the amount of vinegar and salt keep it from going rancid anytime soon. I have often kept some mustards and ketchup at room temp with no problem.

@Perky - Sriracha is also pretty garlicky, besides the heat. It's very tasty.

Huey Fong Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce

I've never refrigerated my ketchup, but then I buy small bottles that don't last much longer than a month or so. If it were a condiment rarely used, that sat around for six months at a time, I might think differently on the matter.

Thanks all! I might try it and cut it with ketchup so it isn't too spicy for my acid reflux. Good way to use up the ketchup too. I love chili sauce and use that often instead of ketchup. That's about as spicy as I can get.

Mmmm...sriracha. So good on so many different things. The first one being seafood. Darn right amazing on grilled shrimp that's already seasoned with a little wasabi powder.

Great addition to chicken and pasta...Or the chicken with the pasta...

Never thought to mix it with Ketchup. Interesting.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves the stuff. I promise, it's SO good with ketchup.

@Mel's Diner, is your name a reference to the historic Mel's in Hollywood? I love that place!
@Chisai, tell me how it goes! I'm anxious to have another ketchup and sriracha convert.

@PumpkinBear - I affectionately call my kitchen Mel's Diner as an homage to the 70's television comedy "Alice." I do virtually all of the cooking here and sometimes my husband acts like this is a restaurant i.e. he thinks I should prepare all of the meals made to order, when he wants to eat them, so to give him a reality check I jokingly say, "What do you think this is, Mel's Diner?" What I would really like to say is "Kiss my grits," the line immortalized by Flo in "Alice." LOL I guess I should come up with a more flattering name for my kitchen, now that I think about it!

Thanks for reminding me that I need to buy a bottle of Sriracha. I tossed the last one after a lengthy power outage and have forgotten to pick one up. I'll have to try it with ketchup. I've made cheese quesadillas before and eaten them with Sriracha so I'm game for anything. Sriracha wings are a good thing, too.

@Pumpkin - Ketchup and Sriracha on French Fries - awesome. And how could it not be? Spicy, garlicky, tomatoey, fries were made for it.

Forgot to add - I have officially names such mix - Ketchacha. Groovy, yes?

VERY groovy, Chisai.

You've made me laugh, Mel. Men, rather than being forever grateful and curteous of a woman who's cooking for them, act as they always do: Like jerks. Can't live with them, can't live without them ...
