Snickerdoodles

In my attempt to bake my way through the Blue Ribbon Baking Book, I recently made a recipe for Snickerdoodles for the first time in my life. Strangely enough, although I have been baking all of my life, and have made countless varieties of cookies and other goodies, I somehow managed to never even hear about these cookies!

They turned out really well (apparently). Everyone seemed to like them, and I guess that they cme out the way that Snickerdoodles are supposed, which is nice, since I didn't really even have a photo of what they were going to turn out like (although one can suualyl make a good guess based upon the recipe).

My question is this: Where did that name come from? I got confused, because I thought that they would have peanuts in them, like the Snickers candy bar, and pbviously they do not. Does anyone know their story?

@ Traveller - I've heard several ideas about the origin of snickerdoodles over the years and so I checked Wikipedia to see what's been compiled there. Although much of the content there is user-generated and best viewed with a bit of skepticism, The Joy of Cooking is cited: "The Joy of Cooking claims that snickerdoodles are probably German in origin, and that the name is a corruption of the German word for "snail dumpling" (Schneckennudeln, or cinnamon-dusted sweet rolls)."

Snickerdoodles were a favorite growing up and are one of my husband's favorites. I used to take them to work and they were always gone before lunchtime. A couple of people were known to grab half-a-dozen and hoard them in their desks for future consumption.

Your comment on another thread has me contemplating going back to school for another degree. Heck, I'll pay tuition and study again just to have access to the world's largest cookbook collection! :)

I think one of my cookbooks claims snickerdoodles as a Pennsylvania Dutch recipe, which of course makes them German.

We make them fairly often since they are so simple & kid friendly.

I would think snickerdoodles have been around a lot longer than the Snickers candy bar? I never made that connection, but snickerdoodles were one of my childhood favorites. I thought the name had to do with the smile (snicker) it put on my face and the cracks on top looked like doodles to me. Made perfect sense, still does. Must be a kid at heart even though I'll be middle aged tomorrow, if I live to be 120!

I had never heard of snickerdoodles either until about a year ago. They're not bad - perfect for someone who doesn't like chocolate.

Specialty's (the one at 369 Pine St. in San Francisco) is trialing Snickerdoodles... I'll go try one now that my appetite is whet :)

@MelsDiner: No need! They are currently trying to (very slowly) compile all of the recipes online!!! I have no idea how far along they are, since I think that it's just one guy and a computer screen, but who knows, maybe it will get done!

@Traveller - Ah, what a relief! Thousands of dollars saved! Now to live long enough to enjoy the completed project. In a weird masochistic kind of way, I kind of envy the guy who's uploading all those recipes. I have a feeling I live nowhere near where this project is being undertaken, but if I did, I would happily volunteer to help.

@MelsDiner: It's in Denver, if you are interested. :) Oh, and thanks very much for the Joy of Cooking reference! I have never been onto the wikipedia thing, but I guess that it's nice to know that it can be helpful, at least in some areas!

@Traveller - Thanks for the info. I live in a state that's not too far from Colorado. Maybe I can convince my husband that we should move. :)

Keep us posted as you continue baking your way through the Blue Ribbon Baking Book. I will have to try cooking my way through a book sometime, but I wouldn't even begin to know which one to pick. Too many cookbooks, too little time.

@Traveller -- where in Denver? This is where the world's largest cookbook collection is???? OMG, I may be getting giddy at the thought.

Tell me more, pleeeeeez!

@dbcurrie: Apparently, one of the librarians at the University of Denver passed away and left her entire collection with the university. That is the story, anyway.
