Signs of Spring
Last night I had my first fresh artichoke of the season! (Steamed with a side of lemon mayo.) Spring has officially sprung in the frozen tundra of Minnesota.
What's your signal that spring has begun? Has it happened yet or are you still in the last legs of winter? How do your eating habits transition from winter to spring?

Ah...tomorrow will be the first sign of warm nice weather here in Chicago. It's been cold all week, and the week before we still had some snow, ew. The weather has been so confusing, we've been going back and forth on the blog about what to even cook. But, I think for me, artichokes would probably be a good start. I just discovered how much I love them so why not usher in spring that way too?

I've been eating asparagus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! It's way too expensive just now, but I can't get enough and I love it prepared a dozen different ways. I have strawberries in the fridge and I plan to attack them right now! I love spring, but my favorite season is just around the corner. I am so glad to bid winter good riddance.

Totally agree with the asparagus! I'm going to get sick of it soon!

My first Daffodil bloomed Wednesday (I didn't eat it) and the rhubarb is coming up. I'm looking forward to asparagus too.

What's a season?

Yeah - I live in Miami. No seasons here, but I can tell when the seasons turn by what's in the produce isle.

LivetoEat, do you live in the Twin Cities? Where are you finding fresh artichokes??
tacroy80 at 4:23PM on 04/04/08
I found a couple decent ones at the Richfield Lunds (Hwy 62 and Penn). I haven't really looked anywhere else because I've been too lazy to go grocery shopping!

PS tacroy- I stalked you a little bit here on SE and I totally remember Friendly's sundaes from my youth. We lived outside Boston, even though I'm a MN native. Are you new to the cities?

Fresh bamboo shoots in the market instead of the frozen or vacuum packed-kind! Mm...
Also tender asparagus!

the wonderful taste of the small bit of nectar that you get from the flower of wild honeysuckle.

Asparagus has been in the stores, and it's down to a buck a pound. It's still not growing locally, but that will come soon enough.
A few weeks ago, it seemed like all the veggies at the store looked tired and unhappy. Recently, the lettuce has been perkier, there are some nice looking green beans, and overall it's starting to look more promising.
The farmer's markets won't be open until May, but at least the grocery store veggies are looking better.

I'm with Perky and everybody else - it's asparagus time now! I can't wait for strawberries...

@Olddad
I was told by an older coworker of mine a few days ago that she used to do that as a kid. I want to try it, but I don't think I can find a honeysuckle flower I'd dare to eat around suburbia...

Springtime is quickly giving way to summer already in SE Louisiana. We've had local strawberries for some time, and the days are already getting hotter and the mugginess is creeping back every morning. I cannot wait for peaches, nectarines, and especially cherries. I've had my share of apples and I'm ready to move on!

I am with @Perky! I have been nuts with the asparagus and I bought 2 Huge boxes of strawberries today. When we were in California last year, I ate artichokes for lunch and dinner every day!!
crazyspice at 5:06PM on 04/05/08
The artichokes here still look horrible...and they're $2.99 a piece. However, I went to the produce market today and got strawberries for 0.99 a quart. Asparagus was very cheap and they had pineapples for $2.99? Now that, I can get behind.

i just polished off a bunch of asparagus, an artichoke, and a box of strawberries. i've been eating basically those things for the past week or two!

fuuchan, honeysuckle is a very tough plant and can grow almost anywhere. i have wild honesuckle growing in several areas around the house and have been told that i'm the only fool in the nation that fertilizes an invasive plant. if you know of someone that has wild honeysuckle you can plant a small stem and it will begin to flower in about 2 years. if you find a plant near you go ahead and try it, simply slowly pull the base of the flower out and there will be a glistening drop of nectar ready to be enjoyed.
mankind could spend trillions of dollars and still not duplicate the taste.
