Shipping wine from Europe?
Does anyone have any experience with shipping wine home from Europe? What is the best/easiest/cheapest way to do this? I'm going to France next week and I know I'm going to want to buy a lot of wine... packing it in my suitcase makes me nervous. Wine recommendations also welcome. ;)

I would think that the easiest way, if you are going to vineyards would be to have them ship it back for you. But I am not sure of state/fed laws to do so. I tried to ship wine to Europe to a colleague and I couldn't find anyway to do so. Try a google search on wine importers, you should be able to find out something, good luck :)

Shipping alcohol laws differ state to state--your local postmaster will be able to tell you what the limits and restrictions are for your state.
It is best to let the vineyards pack and ship the wines for you because procuring the necessary packaging materials is a pain and can get costly. The vineyards will charge you a fee, but still it's better than trying to do it yourself. Most vineyards will also require a minimum purchase, ie at least a case or half case befoer they will ship, again, this will vary from producer to producer.
My husband and I were careful to buy from vineyards with limited or no distribution in the US so that we didn't waste money shipping wine that we could buy from a wine distributor at home.
