Posting abbreviations
I am posting this as kitchen talk because I have no idea how to fit it into a category. Yesterday I was asking some younger people to explain some of the abbreviations I have tried to decipher on this site. YMMV for example. I do not text on my phone so I remain in a state of confusion here. Could someone give me a basic list of what means what? I do know BTW. I thought LOL meant "lots of laughs". My husband just laughed at me. Please help me. I feel like the mayor of the village of idiots!

YMMV means "your mileage may vary" and applies in situations when there may be a different outcome, i.e., this recipe didn't work well for me, but YMMV.
LOL is "laughing out loud". What else would you like to know?

Thanks lemons. I thought it meant young men may vomit. I'm with you iz........some are tough to decipher.
I don't text either. All those that end in IL (MIL, FIL, SIL, BIL) are in-laws. DH is darling husband. IMHO - in my humble opinion. SO significant other. FP is food processor (I thought it meant fireplace). Those are a few that stumped me.

One that threw me at first was ISO, especially as the first word in a posting header.

I can't think of all the ones I have seen. IRL is one and why do you put @ in front of poster's names? I will post them here as I come across them. IMHO was one, but you answered that.
izatryt at 12:09PM on 04/13/08
@izatryt - IRL = in real life
@before a name - calls attention to a name when a person is being addressed, or so that it makes it easy for them to see when they're being referenced.
The one that drove me crazy for a while was IIRC, If I recall correctly.

IRL - I guessed it meant "in real life", as opposed to cyberlife.
Here is a google list of websites to help. I prefer to stay in the dark and guess, so I can't recommend just one. ;)

@PerkyMac - I just checked out your link. Wow! I had no idea there were so many. I would have never guessed IIRC.
Since I am my own "Kitchen Nightmare", the least I can do is get the posting lingo right.

@1st (you have a very long name!) - That site is wild! One could get quite an education there.

My favorite to use on cooking sites is: DBMNMR.
Don't blame me, not my recipe.
It's used after someone googles a recipe at another poster's request to let the requestor know that although the poster has posted the recipe, the poster did not originate the recipe and may not have prepared it.
Here are a few more that seem to work their way into my texting...
GM! = Good morning!
Y/W = You're welcome.
gr8 = Great
l8r= Later
