Paula Deen's jewelry

When Paula remarried she commented that her new husband would kill her if he caught her cooking with her rings on.. Well, now she's cooking with at least fifteen carats (non-edible) which brings me to the subject: Do you cook with your jewelry (especially rings) on? Mine come off as soon as I hit the door.

26 Comments:

For the thirty years I was married, my rings never came off. When he flew to another coop, I quit wearing any rings - gave them all to my daughters. Of course, I wasn't wearing the entire jewelry case from Tiffany's on both hands. Paula does keep a ring keeper on her counter, but often forgets to take hers off. We're about the same age and I get the forgetting part. ;-)

i take all my jewelry off (including my engagement ring) when i get home from work, except for my wedding ring. that never comes off, except for the occasional dip in a cleaning solution.

I never take my ring off unless I'm mixing something messy like meatballs or meatloaf....I'm always afraid I'm going to lose them if I put them somewhere...then I'd really be in trouble!

If i'm cooking, my rings come off. I dont care how many times you wash your hands, the settings can harbor bacteria.

I just lost my wedding ring this weekend because I did take it off to cook and its not in the the little bowl on the window ledge I keep it in.

I couldn't get my wedding ring off without considerable pain to my finger.

Rings off, and put in the same place always, something I learned the hard way. However, unless my ears develop extraordinary and heretofore unexpected knife skills, the four earrings stay in.

Cooking, washing dishes, cleaning the kitchen... Ring and bracelets come off and go into a ceramic soap dish that contains one of those spikey rubber things designed to keep the bar of soap dry. It sits near the sink and is used exclusively for this purpose. The rubber soap thingy ensures the jewelry stays in place, and keeps it prominently in view so I don't forget about it.

I hate trying to get food -- especially raw meat -- out of the nooks and crannies of my jewelry. Not to mention all the hand-borne germs they harbor that are likely to get into the food. Blech.

I don't wear jewelry.

I never wear jewelery in the kitchen - I'm too afraid I'll lose a ring or bracelet to a ball of bread dough. That said, I know plenty of cooks who wear jewelry while working, most of them just a wedding band. I know one cook who wears two rings and four bracelets all the time, even while trimming steak, and he's never had an issue.

I agree with mepolo -- my mom's lost more than a couple rings in her lifetime (including a diamond engagement ring at the bottom of the ocean, don't ask) mostly because she takes them off all the time! She has designated bowls by the kitchen sink, but they always get moved. My rings always stay on, unless I REALLY don't feel like cleaning meatball gook out of them (ew.)

I never cook with them on because I hate cleaning them. I put my rings in my drawer till I go out then they go back on. I do however wear a thumb ring that never comes off. Its solid and it is easy to clean

Unless I'm doing something really messy or possibly-unsanitary (such as meatballs, as embolini9 pointed out), they don't leave my fingers. However, I only wear a wedding band an a simple engagment ring -- not the entire David Yurman catalogue, *cough, cough* PAULA.

I only take my rings off if I'm mixing with my hands (i.e. meatloaf or yeast bread). Otherwise, I'm just too paranoid about misplacing it. I've almost washed them down the drain before when I left them on my cutting board.

I'm with sheeats and embolini9, on all the time unless meatballs or burgers are involved.
Of course, after buying this *bleep* house, I have stopped wearing my wedding set because of all the work (stripping wallpaper, painting, staining, painting, sanding, drilling, painting). I don't want to get paint on my rings--that's what I tell my hubby, anyway. It has nothing to do with resentment over all the painting and wallpaper-scraping. Seriously.

All jewelry comes off the minute I walk in the door. Years ago, I lost my original wedding band in an airplane of all places. That ring can never be replaced so the ones I have now are not sentimental.

Plain wedding band is the only jewelry that ever goes on, and it only comes off for fingers-deep, messy prep, and some kinds of pastry and dough work where it might catch (stretching pizza dough, kneading and rolling pasta).

Never, i cant cook with even a ring on!

I don't wear my rings while cooking. I barely remember to put them on when I leave home. As a result, people (neighbors, acquaintances, work associates, in-laws) pay undue attention to my left ring finger, probably wondering if I've forgotten my ring or if there's trouble in, um, paradise.

I used to wear my wedding rings ALL.THE.TIME...then I became a stay at home mom. Between cooking, cleaning, making bottles, cleaning some more and changing diapers, my rings are better off safely tucked away in jewelry boxes.

I take my rings off to cook, clean, do plant care, anything with goo or dust. They go in exactly the same place every time, on a ring keeper in a drawer. I am terrified of my engagement ring as it is a ludicrous diamond for a couple of our income level (it came from a late aunt who purchased it in a pawn shop in the 60's - has since been reset) and I always feel like it will end up in the bottom of the washing machine, or worse, so I am supercareful.

MommyBITTER always said it was gross to wear jewelry while cooking. The food could get stuck up under the jewelry and start to smell.

Paula has some serious bling. I don't think I could cook with all that on. I"m sure I'd blind myself or whomever was in the room with me at some point.

I keep my wedding set, watch and diamond solitare necklace on at all times. I rarely wear earrings, but do take them out if I'm working at my 2nd job in a camp kitchen. I think all VISIBLE piercings should come out of their respective holes in public kitchens, but at home it is totally a personal preference.

I had the diamond in my first engagement ring lowered because the setting was high and I kept getting guck under it. Said diamond now graces my neckline as a reminder of where I've been and how far I've come since the first marriage....the second wedding set has lots more diamonds in it and I'm not anticipating any marital woes this time around so they shall remain on the ring eternally. If only I hadn't lost one of the diamond earrings I wore on my wedding day. :(

I love all of my jewelry. I firmly believe in wearing some combination every day including my wedding set and a 6k aquamarine. You have it for enjoyment, so enjoy away! I must admit, all rings come off when diving into any type of ground meat. My simple solution to not losing them: I keep a cheap jar of jewelry cleaner in my kitchen cupboard, and that is the ONLY place I put them when cooking. Instead of harboring yucky meat residue, my rings get a mini sparkle treatment.

This is such an ironic thread for me because I just got engaged last weekend and have been debating this question. I'm completely paranoid about losing it (I have a history of losing jewelery) but I also don't want to be cleaning raw ground meat out of the setting. Yuck.

I wear latex gloves all the time. I mean, ALL THE TIME. I hate to smell or feel anything on my hands. If it is protein, its gloves. Bread dough, gloves. The only thing I don't mind is washing and prepping vegetables/fruit. Other than that, I am safely hidden in latex.
