I wish they would! I was hooked from the first episode of the original Iron Chef!! I haven't seen or heard anything regarding running the original series. I will stay tuned to find out. (Unless I retire from this site as earlier threatened)

The Japanese version is way more entertaining, although I like the American version because the food they prepare is more along the lines of what I would eat. Believe me, I have searched the listings many times to see if they were airing the old Japanese episodes and never find them. You can't even rent them on Netflix, which probably means you can't see them anywhere. I hope someone out there knows how to find them...

Original Iron Chef all the way. I hate Iron Chef America. It's boring.
evilchefmom at 9:34PM on 04/09/08
Go ahead and call me naive, but when I found out how much of the "show" is fake, especially that the food the judges taste is prepared afterward by staff, not even the contenders, I stopped watching. I always thought it was more sport, but I believed it was an honest contest. I'll never watch either version again.
@crazyspice.......don't do it girl! You are a valuable, intelligent, witty contributor. I always look forward to seeing what you have to say. I'll have to look around and see why you're so unhappy you'd leave us. ;-(

No competition! Original.
karenita at 9:57PM on 04/09/08
It occasionally comes on late night TV, i think the 2AM slot on Food TV Canada (correct me if I'm wrong, but thats usually around the time I do happen to catch it on TV)
deepitbhatia at 10:02PM on 04/09/08
For certain the original. I watched for the great dishes and Chairman Kaga's wardrobe. Seriously, I enjoyed the different perspective on food the show provided.

@Perky - You won't have to look too far. ;-0
crazyspice at 10:42PM on 04/09/08
Original, of course! They used to air it at 4 am once a week (and don't ask me how I happen to know this:-)), but it hasn't been on in a couple of months. I really miss it!
@crazyspice - I hear you!
brooke29 at 11:28PM on 04/09/08
PerkyMac, I think Crazyspice wants to leave because of all the bickering everyone is doing-----all over Sandra Lee. I too would hate to see Crazyspice go. There are a few of you I look for, and even though I rarely say anything, I enjoy what YOU all say. It seems there are a few who can't tolerate SL, and if everyone doesn't agree with them, they get verbal diahrrea (spelling?)all over everyone. Sorry. This is about Iron Chef, huh?

@JudyV........very pleased to make your acquaintance. I had a teacher once who used to accuse her students of mental constipation and oral diarrhea. Some threads can seem that way, too. We all are occasionally guilty, especially if something feels personal or hits a nerve. Usually, once it's over, everyone tries to play nice, or they leave the playground. Yes, it can get pretty childish too. I'm glad you enjoy, but don't be afraid to jump in the water (pretend there's an awesome pool, k?). There are some really terrific people here! Let's encourage crazyspice to stay and play!. I hope to get to know you, too!!! p.s. I stayed out of the SL discussion because I've ranted and raved about her enough already. ;)

I like Iron Chef America because it uses ingredents I'm familiar with, so I can better imagine what the stuff will taste like. And every now and then, there's some new concept or combination of ingredients that inspires me.
I used to watch the original Iron Chef once in a while, but I didn't actually notice that it was gone. I guess there are just enough other things to fill my time.
dbcurrie at 12:23AM on 04/10/08
It seems to me the Japanese version disappeared from US television shortly after Fuji TV ordered the shutdown of all the show's fansites because of so-called copyright violations. Personally I watch the American version whenever Batali or Cora are competing. And frankly, I've never really seen it as a true "competition", merely entertainment. I mean come on, it's not as though there's any kind of prize for the "winner".
LunaPierCook at 5:10AM on 04/10/08
original Iron Chef was great TV! although I hate to admit it I like the american version too. I dont car if its fake, I watch it for the fun of seeing how some of the chefs react to stress. and lets face it Morimoto is amazing.
And off subject, @crazy Please dont take off. Some people like to argue just for the sake of stirring things up.
Everyone has a right to their opinion, and if you dont agree with someone, just be nice about it, or shut up on that thread. The personal attacks are way out of line. This is supposed to be about food not a forum for showing off how smart you are by trashing others.
huney_bumper at 7:25AM on 04/10/08
@huney_bumper, nicely written! Maybe there's a way to say just that in the terms of service?
LunaPierCook at 9:19AM on 04/10/08
@crazyspice: Please don't leave. We all love reading your posts, and hunoey_bumper is right, everyone has their own opinion, but we really should just be respectful of them, even when we disagree.
Traveller at 11:19AM on 04/10/08
yep the original was far superior.
bobbob at 11:44AM on 04/10/08
@crazyspice - don't you dare go anywhere. Too many people look forward to reading your posts to have you just dump us over SL silliness. [/foot stomp]
Old Iron Chef, hands down. It was glorious in its kitchiness, so wonderfully over the top. I had a massive crush on Rokusaburo Michiba, the show's first Iron Chef Japanese and I would always giggle when they tried to show Hiroyuki Sakai as a real playboy ladies man.
chisai at 12:08PM on 04/10/08
@crazyspice: You are not allowed to leave-I will not have it, I say! (hands on hips, foot stomp) I always look forward to your posts and to see what you have to say.
@PerkyMac: Just look at the thread re: Change of Heart...you will then understand the threat to leave. It made a newbie like myself afraid
@huney_bumper: Well done. (clapping)
I agree with the majority. Old Iron Chef rules. Iron Chef America is boring.
Butrflygirly at 12:44PM on 04/10/08
I loved the original Iron Chef for entertainment value and a sort of... cultural education. I used to watch it late at night, cradling my crabby newborn, semi-delirious from lack of sleep. It was a trip. :) Wish it was on somewhere...
I like the American Iron Chef for it's instructional value. I learn techniques and ingredient combos that are far more applicable to my cooking than the Japanese version was. I also love to see Jeffrey Steingarten rip on a chef in his own unique style, though that doesn't seem to happen as much these days.
Anyway: I'd Tivo the former, but only watch the latter if it happens to be on.
pieninja at 2:08PM on 04/10/08
@PerkyMac, thanks, and thanks for the encouragement. I've been pretty intimidated by what I've been reading, and reluctant to comment. Who am I kidding? Ya'll scared me silly! One day, everyone's joking and sharing, and next day it seemed as though everyone was turning on each other. I had to speak up when Crazyspice said she might leave, cause she, like you and a few others, contribute so much to this forum. I look forward to getting to know you and anyone who can put up with my rambling way of trying to communicate. Getting old(er) is hell. All the brain fog! LOL
Crazyspice, I know you don't know me, but please don't leave. You will leave a big hole in the spirit and heart of this forum, and you can see, NO-one wants you to go!!

Original Iron Chef all the way! I wound up getting used to the America version just because it's the only one on now...but grrr, bring back the old one!
All due respect to Alton Brown.

The Original, for no reason other than the gratiousness of the competitors in general, and IC Hiroyuki Sakai in particular.
srhcb at 7:04PM on 04/10/08
Yay! i'm not the only one who misses the original! :)
sure, i'll watch iron chef america if there is nothing else on, and i've got nothing else to do. . . but it's so stilted.
and the original had Kaga! and his Liberace outfits! and the cute giggly judges who were "actresses". that show was a trip, and i miss it!
redhead at 8:03PM on 04/10/08
The original IC was theatre, IC America is sport.
