Midnight Food Run?

OMG....I'm out of __________. I must throw on my sweats, find the car keys, boots and umbrella and run to the grocery or convenience store. I can't live without my ________.

Ok, it could be anytime after dark up until early morning hours, but the panic is the same. What would you make a separate run to the store if you discovered it was ALL GONE!!! ???

Coffee. How else am I gonna wake up in the mornin? With healthy juice and whole wheat toast? I don't think so.

Crushed tomatoes, garlic, parsley, olive oil, or pasta. The staples in life, you know.

it would be that late night chocolate craving, sorry Chisai I Never run out of coffee, the only way that could happen in my house is if i was in a coma for a month;) But you're welcome to come over for a cup or two, you bring the danish ;)

Rice. lol (just kidding...sorta)

Actually, I'm one of those people who sighs when I look in the fridge when that "something" isn't there, close the fridge door, walk away, return after 15 minutes, look in the fridge, sigh...rinse and repeat...until the husband is annoyed and puts on his clothes, finds the car keys, boots, and umbrella, and drives to the grocery store 15 minutes away...calls me from the store and asks me what I want.

One of these days, I *have* to tell him - "Oh, I found what I was looking for. Thanks though!"

Um...confession time: if I do run out of something I can't live without, I am sure to discover this way before dark. Alright, scratch this, I don't think I ever run out of whatever it is I can't live without because I make sure I restock before I run out of it, I'm OC like that. On the other hand, several times a year I may get the weirdest midnight cravings and it will certainly NOT be something I normally can't live without...does it make sense? It doesn't happen often, like I said (I usually don't eat at midnight), but my hubby has been known to make a midnight run to Wawa for a little container of potato salad that I simply had to have, or to Cluck-U for a dozen of wings, or even to a diner for a serving of chips with gravy, otherwise known as gravy fries (hanging head in shame). Yeah, not a very sophisticated or healthy food trend there...Have I mentioned that it doesn't happen often?:-) Other sudden midnight cravings included White Castle sliders (only ever consumed as a result of such midnight cravings) or a regular burger from wherever...can I still keep my "foodie card"? Please?!

Toilet paper?

Usually the only single food item craving that gets either of us to make a run for it is ice cream. Not because we're out of it (cannot keep it on hand), but because one of us mentions it, and then both of us have to have it.

I imagine I would make the run for coffee, but like huney_bumper, I never let that happen.

The only kind of chocolate I keep around regularly is unsweetened. That way, if I have to have something chocolate, I can usually whip something up, but we won't be furtively nibbling at it.

Milk - for the coffee (that I always have emergency stocks of)

I can't think of anything that can't wait until the next day or the next trip to the grocery store, unless we're out of all food in general. I guess I usually keep a pretty well-stocked kitchen though so I never usually run out of anything that I need. And if I do, then I make adaptations .. I'm sure this has to do with the fact that I don't have a conveniently located grocery store - I only make one trip a week to a few stores b/c they're out of the way/far away.

ummm...formula for the baby ;)

Coffee and/or toilet paper, but being OC also, I stay stocked up. However, when we moved from Florida to this cold, wet, windy, one horse town, here in BFE, somehow I not only ended up with no t. paper, but my coffeemaker was missing! Thank God there is a SuperWalmart, so I could get them, but I miss my Grind'n'brew. I'll have to order a new one from Cooking.com, because in this Godforsaken town, it's Wallyworld or nothing. Really. There is nothing here. Ah, I need an attitude adjustment.

Oh----WAWA! How I miss Wawa and Cluck-U! Even more, I miss real subs and cheese steaks. They DO have a Subway here. Yuck. Even more than Fl., I miss Delaware. Never thought I'd say that, but there ya go. Now I really, really am craving a sub, or maybe a cheese steak, or both! All righty then, I'm off to give myself another pep talk. I'm getting so negative, I'm just gonna have to take all these lemons and make lemonade, or maybe lemon curd. Yum. Feeling better already.

Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia!

@Richard.......you're speaking my language, and I normally don't eat ice cream except when Pumpkin is available. If I see Cherry Garcia, I have to buy it. Just glad (sorta) that it doesn't come in gallon containers.

Sometimes I get inexplicable midnight cravings for fresh apples. And soymilk is a necessity. It helps that at home the corner store is only a five minute walk away!

JudyV, I knew I liked you! I bet what you miss from Delaware is the "Bobbie." I want one right now-maybe after work I will get one..:)

I am currently getting my master's degree and working full time so my midnight cravings are for Sugarfree Red Bull or Ice Cream-Ben & Jerry's (I wish ColdStone was open 24/7-god it's good). That's about it. Oh wait, there is the occasional Homemade Nacho craving...Ok, I'm done now.

@Butrflygirly: You just had to do it, didn't you? A BOBBIE! From Capriotti's!! Or anything from Cappy's. Or Casapulla's. If you are living in the dorms or near-by, is No Name still open? I always thought their burgers were waaay better than Jake's, even though Jake's always got the awards. I liked almost everything from No Name, but not their baklava, and their Greek salad was always totally swimming in dressing. I used to order from there a lot when I was at Chase. Oh, I'm so homesick. For the food, for my friends, but most of all, for my kids and grandkids. There'll never be a real sub shop or a ColdStone here in BFE. Cherry Garcia will have to do, and it does pretty well. I make a mean sub and cheesesteak myself, but real rolls are not to be found here, and forget Amaroso's or Serpe's. In fact, I went to the store looking for hamburger rolls, and couldn't find any, so I asked a clerk if they had any. He looked at me like I had 3 heads and I had to explain what they were. He said "oh, yuant BUNS". Now I know it says buns on the bag, but we always called them rolls, but that's how they talk here. I know---I'm bad, but I'm having a hard time adjusting. I adjust my attitude several times a day, but I doesn't 'stick'. :) Guess I could make my own rolls. No, I forgot. The oven doesn't work. Dang! I'm using the heck out of my toaster oven till I can get another stove, but I don't think it'll work for sub rolls.
Girl, I bet you're chowing down on that Bobbie right now. I can taste it 1400 miles away, and it is GOOD!! Oil or mayo, or both? Enjoy!!
JudyV

@JudyV...........excuse my ignorance, but I can't figure out where you live now. BFE? Bobbie is a new term to me and I'm practically in Delaware. I got a real kick out of Cluck-U. Is it a less lethal term of endearment (well, you know what I mean), a University for Popeye's or KFC, or just another chix joint? Whatever, I LOVE that name. I'd miss hoagie rolls too. There was a thread looking for a good recipe, but without an oven.......? Hope you get it repaired sooner, rather than later.

For years, I'd do a midnight run for cigarettes. If by some nightmare occurrence the coffee was empty, that would be a sure trip. Cream and sugar were like TP, might have a suitable substitute for one morning (condensed milk, equal and tissues, respectively). I also remember looking for an all night pizza shop on one particular hungry all nighter

I know this sounds really weird, but I'm always hungry for a snack in the middle of the night and nothing makes me happier than a good late night sandwich. The problem is that I CANNOT eat a sandwich if it doesn't have lettuce on it. I need that crunch or it's worthless to me. Thankfully, there's a Mexican meat market and a well-stocked liquor store on my street that's literally a two minute walk from my front door. If I'm ever out of anything I can hit up either one, but especially the meat market for their cheap produce.

@Perky - since I originally mentioned Cluck -U upthread, I'm more than happy to tell you what it is. I've discovered the magic that is Cluck-U several years ago, on the way home from a late night party (where I didn't eat anything and was famished at 2 am as we were driving home). It is a real name, and it's a small chain that originated in Rutgers, and can be found all over the East Coast now, according to my husband (as you know, I've only been here for 5.5 years, so I rely on hubby here:-). Oh, and we're in NJ). This must be the only chain I truly fancy. They specialise in chicken wings, and they (the wings) are absolutely fantastic. And so is their bleu cheese dipping sauce, by the way. Anyway, that night I fell in love. Since then, 2-3 times a year, always late at night (I guess because that's when I first came across them), I have a crazy craving for some Cluck-U, and it simply HAS to be satisfied! With all this talk, I now want some:-)

I have been known to run out for mayo when looking at some leftover asparagus or artichoke in my fridge. I remember one time getting a big laugh from the checkout because I always buy Best Foods (Hellmans for those on the other side of the rockies) and it was all I bought on that trip.

OMG - @brooke29 - this is so freakin ironic! The Cluck U folks have been trying to get the business of the company my husband is with. Last week they sent him gallons of sauce and he just wore his prestigious Cluck U sweatshirt tonight when he went out to clean the grill. I tasted all the sauces and they are pretty good, but I'll just bet they are better on actual wings, huh?

There is absolutely nothing I crave in the middle of the night except perhaps chocolate and I am always sure to have some stash in the cupboard. Does food taste better if you have to go out for it?

@frederika - I am jealous and not even ashamed of it! And yes, the sauce is quite brilliant on wings, I'll tell you that much! In fact, theirs are the only "ready-made"/takeaway wings that I ever go for. Now I officially crave some!

And I think you nailed it - food does taste better if you have to go out for it, or (sometimes) better yet, if your SO goes out for it;-)

@brooke29 - All I have is the sauce! Must...have...wings...!!! Is the Cluck open 24 hours?

@frederika - IT IS! At least the ones round here (Jersey shore). Must...have...wings...is...right!!!

Oops, I stand corrected - they're open until 4 am...which is just as good as far as I'm concerned:-)

Woo-Hoo! Cluck U!!!

@JudyV-I just had to...I'm sorry..:) Of course it must be with Mayo. And Buns?! Seriously? Ugh, people just don't get it. I feel awful for you not being able to get rolls. You know around these parts it's mandatory. Not sure on the No Name place. Jake's do have good Burgers, but I am with you. Not sure why they always get awards. 5 Guys is better I think-and a step up from that is Red Robbin. Now that place has some Burgers! YUMMMM. Another place you may miss I just thought of: The Dog House. Don't want you to forget the finer places of DE..:)

@PeryMac: I see you are now schooled about Cluck-U. How awesome is that name..:) Even better are the wings. Def a place to stop after a late night (or early morning) party session. Now on to explain the Deliciousness of a Bobbie. It comes from a place called Capriotti's. Think Thanksgiving on a roll (no buns here). Fresh turkey, stuffing, fresh cranberry sauce, mayo-all on a roll. I don't know how they do it, but GOD IT'S GOOD. To the best of my knowledge, there is not a shop in NJ-as I believe that's where you are, right?

@Butrflygirly.....(cute name, but damn hard to spell!). I was raised in NJ and lived in SJersey until I moved to PA 22 years ago (born in the Poconos). I took classes at Rutgers and visit NJ all the time, central and the shore, mostly. Can't believe I never heard of Cluck-U (or saw one) before this. When did they start and when did they multiply?

I've been eating the TDay sandwich all my life. We used to make them on snowflake rolls, but bread would do in a pinch. If I don't cook TDay dinner at my house, I make it anyway, just for the leftovers, especially that exact sandwich. Just curious, what kind of roll do they use for a Bobbie?

I never thought about it before, the I only use the term bun when referring to the bread for hamburgers or hot dogs, although roll is perfectly acceptable too. Hoagie, steak, snowflake, dinner bun? Never. Odd.

@PerkyMac: Thanks! i adore butterfiles-hence the name. I just shortened it a bit-made it my own..:) Not quite sure where they got started, but I was aware they are a chain. There's a location on Main St. in Newark, DE. That's the only one I have ever been/go to. It's better than Wings to Go if you ask me. Just tastes better and they are meatier, at least in my experiences. As for the Bobbie, they use a sub roll-which are baked daily with crack added I think. Their rolls just seem to be perfect every time I get one. Here is a link: http://www.capriottis.com/ to the place. If you are ever in DE, I recommend getting the Bobbie or Capastrami or Tuna or....

Buns should be reserved for hot dogs or hamburgers. I concur-very odd.
