Ice Cream Cones
Do you keep them at home? Do you prefer wafer, waffle or pretzel cones, or just a bowl, thank you? And, while we're at it, do you always order the same flavor of ice cream and the same type of cone, or do you vary it?

Always mint chocolate chip on a sugar cone.

I only keep cones at home if little ones are around. I like the sugar wafer cone and vary the ice cream. Favorites are pumpkin and black raspberry.

I loooove chocolate dipped waffle cones, but they need to be the real quality ones, which hard hard to find at the store, so I usually go without. I definitely need a lot in and/or on my ice cream though, so I always have jimmies, hot fudge, and whipped cream on hand. I don't have a favorite flavor (unless you count Hagen-Daaz dulce de leche, sinful,) but anything with big chunks of peanut butter/brownies/cookie dough/fudge/chocolate-covered espresso beans/oreos in it works wonders for me.

i love pie ice creams - boston cream, coconut cream (outstanding), pumpkin, apple, key lime (droooool)...i guess i like the crust in my ice cream. gotta have the sugar waffle cone, freshly pressed and hand rolled on premises please.
p.s. anyone else here love dave & andy's of pittsburgh?

Sugar cones for ice cream at home! I rarely keep them around, though. My first choice is neopolitan, closely followed by cookies & cream. If I'm out and getting a soft serve cone, it has to be a cake-style cone with chocolate/vanilla swirl and rainbow sprinkles or vanilla with a chocolate dip.

I go back and forth with ice cream cones. I always feel messier when I get them because my ice cream is not contained in a convenient little bowl and I don't eat it fast enough to not drip all over my hands. But I do like them! My mom used to buy them and keep them in the house but it's been years since those days.

I'm not a fan of ice cream cones. I like the ice cream more and didn't like having the cone as my last bite. I eat (and order) my ice cream in a bowl.

I'm not much for the cone -- I prefer a really good scoop in a bowl. Love mint chip, coffee, anything with cherries in it. I haven't had pumpkin -- but pumpkin + ice cream sounds like a little bit of heaven!! Where do you get that?!
Also, if you've got real strawberry, with strawberries in it, give me a scoop and please don't expect me to share!
I recently tried La-Loo's goat's milk ice cream, which is on the somewhat healthier side and also good for those of us with lactose issues. YUM YUM! They have a strawberry with a ripple of balsamic that rocks! Their cappuccino is also amazing.

I love variety- my favorites though are lime sorbet, coffee chocolate configurations, and cinnamon. Fresh made waffle cone only please- none of that paper-wafer junk.
Thanks now I want to go eat ice cream for lunch.

Love the wafer cones. Favorite ice creams include pistachio, coffee, coconut, pumpkin, and peanut butter ripple.
Perky's question made me think of cupcake cones. Ever had one? They're gimmicky but fun for little people (and me). Made them over Easter. Just prepare your favorite cupcake recipe, add liners to the cups in the pan, fill the cup 3/4 of the way with batter and then plop an upside-down wafer cone over the batter. Bake the cone-covered cupcakes for as long as the recipe states . . . and there you have it.
The cake rises into the cone and will stabilize it when the cone is placed right-side up on the counter. Remove the liner and put your favorite icing over the exposed cupcake. Add sprinkles, sparkles, whatever. Kinda looks like ice cream. But it's not! Heh.

I only get cones when I'm on the move -- more convenient to hold in one hand that using a bowl and spoon. At home, I like to put vanilla ice cream between two hot buttered waffles. And as for brand -- the best I've ever had is LaSalle -- especially the cherry vanilla.

I always liked the waffle cones, because they tended to last longer, since I am a notoriously slow eater. And Mint chocolate chip (or as we in the Midwest sometimes call it - Peppermint Bon Bon) was always my favorite.

My mom used to make cupcake cones to take to school for my birthday when I was growing up. Everyone thought they were so cool....I totally forgot about those and probably should make for my daughter (7).
I like sugar cones...especially the ones that have that frozen chunk of overly sweet chocolate at the bottom. Mmmmmm.
jcrisco at 2:13PM on 04/04/08
Mmmmm...Ice cream, but please-bowl only. So many wonderful flavors I can't always get the same one. But, the MOST DELICIOUS EVER is ColdStone Creamery. OMG. The Boston Cream Pie choice is perfection. But, I will eat any ice cream. Except Butter Pecan.
PS. Love the site!
Butrflygirly at 2:30PM on 04/04/08
I agree with jcrisco--I used to wish that every cone I had would have that chunk of chocolate at the tip of the cone. I think the Nestle Drumsticks used to have that...
That being said, the best bite is definitely the last (though then it's all gone...) where the ice cream has melted into the bottom of whatever type of cone you're using (I prefer waffle cones) and it is all soggy and sweet. YUM! I don't use them at home, and I have always wanted to try a pretzel cone--that salty/sweet combination is wonderful!

I forgot about cupcake cones - I used to make them for my girls and they loved them. They were all the rage for celebrating birthdays in school. I'll have to remember when my granddaughter comes to visit. Once the cake is eaten, you can fill the cone with ice cream!
What's this about chocolate IN the cone? I missed out on that one.
PerkyMac at 2:53PM on 04/04/08
I knew I shouldn't have read this. I want an ice cream cone NOW. Any flavor. Any type of cone.
elizabethw at 3:17PM on 04/04/08
we don't keep cones at home, but I love waffle cones; however, I rarely order them b/c they usually put SO much ice cream in waffle cones, and I'm on a perpetual diet. I usually order a kid size scoop in a cup if I'm getting ice cream out.
mrsbao at 4:18PM on 04/04/08
I don't keep cones at home either... but I would have a sugar cone when on the go. Here in Puerto Rico we have a chain called Soft & Creamy which make the best soft serve ice creams I have ever tasted. I love to order there a chocolate cone or a vanilla cup with chocolate syrup, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!
However, I just returned from a trip to Vermont, and Ben & Jerry's flavors have a spell on me right now... I am in love with Triple Caramel Chunk, Americone Dream and Everything but the... - I am waiting impatiently for Free Cone Day coming up on April 29... yeah!!!!

I don't keep cones at home (although what a great idea! I can't believe it never occurred to me!:-)), and truth be told, I prefer my ice cream pure and cone-less... but I do like to munch on a crunchy waffle cone sans ice cream:-)
