Help! Hubby's 40th Birthday Next Weekend - What Kind of Cake?

Ever since I took some cake decorating classes 4 years ago I've been burdened with making and decorating every *#$% birthday cake in the family. Now it's my husband's 40th, and I have ZERO ideas. Any suggestions?

40 mini cupcakes. make each one slightly different. you could write something out on them even. spell 40 out with them when he blows out the candles.

Make a two-tier cake - those always look so much more impressive than a regular layer cake.

black forest because he is so totally old.

Hobbies? Favorite flavors??

I made a two tier chocolate chip cooky dough cheesecake for XH-2's 40th Birthday. He was an unappreciative SOB and is probably off eating spam somewhere but I digress.

What are your DH's favorite flavors?? Are you having a party for him? You'd probably want to do something impressive for a party centerpiece.

Love the Black Forest Cake, BTW - but not necessarily because your DH is old...LOL. It's just a tasty, impressive cake.

The big 40?

Make a tombstone cake. :)

I did a huge 40th party last month and made a double layer chocolate cake with whipped peanutbutter/cream cheese filling, frosted with milk chocolate frosting and covered in chocolate ganache. I have so many requests for this cake its a hit every time.

We need more info. His fav flavors, his food knowledge, what are the thigns he loves. more....

renzata, that made me laugh out loud. i'm 50, so i guess that qualifies me for a petrified forest cake.

@joanpieroni2: WOW. Can I have that recipe??

The double layer is a good idea...You could also fill with a mousse, a type of cheesecake filling, custard even...

Could make a cannoli cake..:) Yummy

I made my husband a hill-shaped cake for his 40th! Decorated it with green rolled fondant, candy rocks, etc.
