I've just signed up for my first CSA (community supported agriculture) farm. I should start receiving boxes of produce at the end of May. I would love to hear from others who've done this. What was great about it? What didn't work so well? How much food did you get? Too much/too little? Any big surprises?

We did it last year for the first time, and I am SO excited to start up again this year! The first week or two was smaller than I thought it would be, but by mid-summer we were bringing veggies to our friend's houses! While there were definitely some things I wouldn't normally buy (kohlrabi, eggplant), it was fun to go each week and not know exactly what we would be getting- it was like Iron Chef! :)

We did it last year and we are choosing not to this year. It was cool, but not for us - we have a decent sized garden and a farmer's market very close to home that I like to go to on Saturday mornings. It was interfering with my own veg. If I were a busier person or had a larger family to feed, I think I'd have liked it more. As it was, I just felt like I didn't have enough time to muck about in my garden because I was trying to figure out what to do with 16 bell peppers a week.

I love mine, I end up eating all kinds of stuff I wouldnt have, and its recently included a lot more fruit, which really makes it worth my while. I hardly ever make it to the farmers market, so this is my way to eat locally and seasonally.
By the way I'm in San Diego and I get Bewise Ranch produce.

My dad's farm is involved in CSA, and one thing that people really seem to like (that gets a bit annoying for us, but beggers can't be choosers!) is have people come to the farm and pick their OWN produce. We designate areas where we have an abundance of stuff, or just areas we don't have enough people to pick, that way people know exactly what they're getting and can pick and choose. (It's only a pain for us because people tend to wander, and they usually wander right into the heirlooms,) but in general it helps everyone - we're able to do stuff other than pick all day, we get stuff off our hands, and the people go home happy!
