Desert Island Food
It's a game I've played with friends and family for decades -- Marooned on a desert island, you have a choice of only ONE meal to eat, over and over. What do you choose? This is an important variation of the condemned man's last prison meal, which is usually an all-time favorite, like grandma's meat loaf, or something out of Lutece. This choice has to be something with legs, something that, over and over, day in and day out, will still get you to the table with an anticipatory smile.
After years of playing, I have zeroed in on three all-time faves. Number one: three basted eggs, bacon, rye bread toast and butter, coffee, orange juice and fruit cocktail. I'll throw out the other two if this thread shows any popularity. :-)

That's a tough one. As much as I love eating summer rolls and a bowl of pho 3-4 times a week...would I like it every single day forever?
You betchya!
As long as it's made exactly to my specification. If I got stuck with a bowl of pho and summer rolls with onions and cilantro in them, that would be cruel and unusual punishment.

A freshly baked perfect French baguette, a tomato- fresh from the vine (stuffed with bulgar wheat, spinach, herbs, olive oil, calamata olives, and just a smattering of goat cheese) and a tiny portion of medium-rare prime rib. To finish, just picked tree ripened pears and good cheese. I'd want a nice pinot noir with the meal and coffee with the pears and cheese.

Rye toast, buttered with thinly sliced peaches on top and a cup of coffee.
Of course, this would have to be a Desert Island where it is morning all day long and there would be no complex protein-requiring hard work to do. I'm sure this exists somewhere.

This is a really hard question. I have to think about it and get back to you.

Sushi (all varieties) and summer rolls with a variety of peanut and spicy sauces. Easy.

Chicken Picatta w/ Artichoke Hearts, Pancetta, and homemade pasta.

I'll go with the bacon, eggs over polenta, toast, orange juice and coffee. Nothing better :)

Pizza: homemade thin crust, spicy sauce sparingly applied, rings of fresh sweet onion, and a smattering of Parmigiano-Reggiano. No heavy toppings so I can be swift on my feet when the polar bears attack. Oh sorry, that's a TV show! :)

It's simple, but cottage cheese, a golden delicious apple, and a kashi granola bar. I could eat that everyday (and, often do...)

Can I have multiple courses? Give me a bowl of mixed olives and some freshly grilled sardines to start. Then I'll take a mile-high sandwich on good Italian bread, spread with pesto and stuffed with roasted peppers and onions, grilled zucchini and eggplant, thick slices of fresh buffalo mozzarella, and paper-thin slices of prosciutto. Raspberries and cream for dessert. I'd also like a nice Chianti to go with the meal, and espresso to finish.

Hmm. This is actually kind of tough, because the food has to have staying power and should also be healthy, I guess. So I'm tossing out cheeseburger deluxes as an option. I guess black bean and corn salad (my recipe, adjusted to my tastes exactly and therefore perfect) followed by diced ripe mango and blueberries and plain yogurt. I think I could eat that at least once a day without getting too tired of it.

Peanut butter and jelly. Only because I know I can do it :)

Boy howdy, as a son of the Islands, and a fan of plate lunch, I'd have to say that:
1) a plate lunch can contain any mix of protein and carbs you can imagine, and if you think of it, it's probably already been done
and,
2) I'd want the biggest, most diverse plate lunch ever created, delivered to my heiau, three times a day!

@TikiPundit - What island? And,
I can't even figure out the answer for me in this situation. I am always intrigued by many of the postings on this site and they do make me really think about what my life would be like in the different scenarios I am reading about. This one has me completely stumped! Maybe I should get out more.
crazyspice at 10:11PM on 04/02/08
There would probably be chicken. Rice, maybe or pasta. A complicated medly of veggies. Salad. Avocados, chips, salsa.. Something with nuts and chocolate for dessert.
Given enough time, I'd probably be able to cheat on the idea by finding ways to recombine the same ingredients different ways so that it wouldn't be the same dish every day. Take the tomatoes of out the salad and mash 'em up into the pasta. Cut up the chicken, let it get cold, and mix it with the salad to create a chicken salad. Hmmm...I have chocolate and nuts and peppers...do I smell mole?

Good French bread, Plugra butter, Steen's Cane syrup, and a good pot of duck and andouille gumbo with some rice!

Wow! What a great site! Just about everybody got the gist of my little contest and really ran with it, but Sbelle clearly caught the 'long haul' nature of the question; I'm having (her?) suggestion for lunch this Saturday -- and in her state, (VA) too! I'm travelling down to Richmond's Monument Ave 10K run (2 daughters running).
But sushi? Never could get into the raw fish thingie. When God created tuna, He created mayonnaise a millesecond later.
My second choice? a '21 Club' cheeseburger and Caesar salad, Wild Turkey and branch water. For Show money, a perfect sub sandwich -- good, crunchy on-the-fat-side baguette, ham, soppressata, capicola, proscuittini, provolone, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, vinegar/oil combo, salt, pepper, oregano and a $2 bottle of Froggie table wine.
swinburne at 9:11AM on 04/03/08
Ok, I've given it some thought. But please ask me again in the future, because maybe I'll change my mind.
Full meal from my family's favorite red-sauce italian joint. Salad with vinegary dressing, crunchy toasted garlic bread, a big order of eggplant parmigiana and a side of cappellini. With a diet coke.
Kerosena at 10:37AM on 04/03/08
thick whole wheat bread lightly mayo'd with sprouts and avacodo slices with VERY crisp bacon. oh man now i am hungry!!!! i could also go for homemade mac n cheese like my momma makes. But really anything that has super crisp bacon is good in my book.

Sushi isn't all raw fish. o.O
Cassaendra at 7:09AM on 04/04/08
Without a doubt, rigatoni with homemade sauce and romano cheese, OR cheese-stuffed tortellini with my mom's homemade pesto. I think my life would be over if I got sick of that. And hey! 3 food groups, right?
embolini9 at 12:40PM on 04/04/08
Oh, and definitely a good chianti to go with it. Swinburne, I'm with you on the tuna.
I think this question was on an episode of Arthur on PBS (the stuff kids make you watch) the teacher, Mr. Ratburn, asked all the kids what their desert island food would be, and they all got it wrong because of course, a healthy body needs all the food groups to survive for long periods of time, so you couldn't survive on just one food. Thus ensued a food pyramid discussion.
