Cool retro party punch recipe??

Hi all,
My 38th birthday is this weekend (yay!) and I am having a dessert party to celebrate. Because it's been a really nasty, evil, bad, lame 3 years or so of very serious illness, losing beloved family members, losing job, etc. and I am finally well enough to celebrate
So...my question is - has anyone got a cool, funky, kinda retro punch recipe which will match well with cupcakes and chocolate fondue and fruit and cake and trifle and bread pudding? I don't need huge quantities, only about 15 people are attending. And if it could be somewhat budget-conscious, so much the better.
Thanks SE's!

My best friends' fave punch from the 50's/60's:
She served it at her wedding and insists on it at every function-

1 can pineapple juice (the tall can..I think 48 or 64 oz.)
1 bottle grape juice
1 bottle cranberry juice
1 2 liter 7-up or other fizzy lemon-lime drink
1 tub pineapple sherbet

Mix all liquids together (can easily be cut down in amount) and float the sherbet on the top, either the whole tub, in scoops etc. As the sherbet melts it gives the punch a foamy creamy layer on top that gets mixed in and tastes neat.
I am sure you could adjust the juices to others if you preferred as well, but this is actually pretty good!
(My friend loves jello salads and 50's casseroles too! )
:D

Regardless of what ingredients you use in your punch, a frozen fruit ring makes it beautiful and festive. Here is a recipe from Paula Deen that gives instructions for the fruit ring, and another punch recipe from Emeril that sounds really good. I think orange and/or lemon would work well with your desserts.

Really, any combination of fruit juices and booze of some sort or wine or champagne with some sparkling soda is good. With all those desserts, I'd think you'd want to keep it from being too sweet. I always add orange or lemon sherbert to any punch. The fruit ring is a must! Adjust the quantities. Congrats on all your "finally turned the corner blessings" and Happy Birthday!!!
Love,
Perky

@sadiepix

We used to make that exact same punch! LOL! The fizzy drink we used tho was Ginger Ale. Now I want some after seeing that recipe.

@bodaciousgirl-
My friend will actually make that for herself for no good reason and drink it for a week..adding the sherbet to her glass as she drank it.
She may have used ginger ale too...probably that was on the original recipe her gramma had clipped.

True is is awfully sweet though. Since sixsonnets did not mention booze, I did not think of mentioning those...tho that way is my fave! ;)

Can there be booze in it?
Trying to look innocent

A friend and I turned 35 within a few weeks of one another, so we had a 70s themed, 70th (35 x 2) bday party for ourselves. We asked everyone to come as a person from the 70s or just wearing something that was trendy back then. We had a guessing game where you put a famous 70s person or character on someone's back and each guest had to ask the others questions to figure out just who they might be.

In addition to kitschy things like fondue and bacon wrapped dates, we served Harvey Wallbangers from a punch bowl and a Jonestown Punch (though we made it with grape soda instead of kool aid and also used a lot of vodka), complete with sign, "Please drink the punch. - Jim Jones". That punch was disgusting, but we figured that it would be.

I realize this could be offensive to some, so I apologize in advance for offending anyone. We knew that none of us at the party were affected by the events at Jonestown.

In college my friends and I always made party punch for "special occasions." It's pretty foolproof; although I can't remember the exact quantites, experimenting to find the right combo is part of the fun!

Cheap "Champagne" (we loved Cooks but would use Totts in a pinch)
Pineapple Juice (one big can to about two bottles of champagne)
Frozen Raspberries (add as many as you want to make it look pretty - usually a bag is good for a batch or two)
Pineapple Sherbert, if desired (although I've been known to make it with whatever flavor the store had - or none at all if we forgot to buy it!)

Happy Birthday!

I had a birthday party in February, and wanted an old-style retro party punch. I made this champagne punch, and everyone thought it was great:

Whatever you end up making, have a wonderful birthday!

Lime Sherbet Punch (what can be more retro than that?!)

1 lg (46oz I think!) can pineapple juice
1 2-liter ginger ale
1 half-gallon lime sherbet
lime and lemon slices
marachino cherries
(optional: Malibu Pineapple Rum!) :o)

very simple, and very yummy! You won't have any of this leftover!!

You guys are awesome! Thanks so much for the birthday wishes.

I'm thrilled to have so many cool recipes to choose from!

And yes, JerzeeTomato, it can totally have booze in it (trying not to look guilty)

@ Gumbeaux Gal- Love your sick sense of humor!

Over 900 people died at Jonestown.

I love you guys, but just couldn't keep quiet about something so horrific being used as a joke. I am offended and stunned.

@PerkyMac - As I said earlier, no one at my party had any ties to it, or we would not have done it. Sorry that I offended and stunned you.

@GumbeauxGal..........no apology necessary. I read your reasoning. I just strongly disagreed and felt the need to say so. I even slept on it first. Like I said, I DO luv ya! Anyway........

This is about a party and I didn't mean to put a damper to it. Let's celebrate and come up with some retro punch recipes for sixsonnets.

@PerkyMac - Thank you and I do understand why you disagreed. I'd probably take heart if someone made a Katrina cocktail. I have learned a valuable lesson that I should think twice before posting things, too.

Luv ya, too!

@sixsonnets, have a happy birthday!

@sadiepix

Serious she does that?!?! THAT is classic. I love it!

@annaliserie

Might have to throw that into my me and my hubby's summer of 100 cocktails. We decided this year - probably under a drunken stupor - that we would have 1 different cocktail every day starting on the solstice.

Needless to say I will be posting closer to June for recipes...

;-)

In my Navy days, there was a punch popular in the Philippines called "mojo". The, um, "social hostesses" in the bars got the recipe after WW2, when US troops brought "bug juice" with them.

I can't even find the recipe online, but I know it had fruit punch, ginger ale or club soda, pieces of fruit, and liberal (I mean left-wing) amounts of rum, vodka and brandy. It could really sneak up on you if you let it.

Couldn't you take any drink that was popular and just fill a punch bowl? Like GumbeauxGal's Harvey Wallbanger. Other popular drinks (from memory, so I'll miss quite a few) were Rob Roy, Whiskey Sours, Rum & Coke, 7&7's, Tom Collins, White Russians, Black Russians, Screwdriver, Fuzzy Navel, Martini, Manhattan. I didn't drink, so I'm probably missing a ton. Perhaps you could lessen the cost by adding more soda/juice and less booze?

thanks so much everyone! think I am probably going to go with annaliseree's punch - love the rum option. You guys are the best! I know it is going to be a great birthday thanks to you all.

sixsonnets - sorry i got to this a bit late, but have a happy birthday anyways.

So if you feel like the party should go on... here's my version of a retro punch - my friend's Aniette's Bull.
