Comfort food
I had one of those horrible mornings today, where EVERYTHING goes wrong, and I started to think, I would KILL for a reese's cup and a piece of lasagna right now. Then I thought, this can't be normal comfort food. I've never been a huge ice cream fan, and I only eat stew and mashed potatos on rare occasions, so I'm wondering, does anyone else have any comfort foods specific to them? Maybe things that other people would think weird but are really the only things that can satisfy a bad day?

Not really a weird, but my comfort food is homemade brownies. Not from a package and they should be the thick, fudgy ones. A glass of cold milk is a must.

A big bowl of sauteed greens always makes me feel better. Or homemade Korean pickled peppers.

Lox and bagels. REAL belly lox (the salty kind), Philly cream cheese (from Kraft, not Philadelphia!). a slice of Vidalia onion on a fresh crunchy bagel from the bakery. Oh and a slice of lettuce. Thus makes this camper happy!

My go-to foods: Taramasalata and warm pita, a toasted bialy with lots of butter, cream of wheat with butter and maple syrup, my mom's homemade chocolate chip cookies, and rice pudding. These foods always make me feel a little better inside when I'm having a particularly awful day. Clearly, I am drawn to fat, salt, and carbs. Never meat, soups or stews for some reason. Or anything as healthy as a bowl of greens - if only!

Lasagne is totally a comfort food, and I'd kill for a piece right now. My swiss chard and spaghetti (The swiss chard) isn't really doing it for me.
Probably anything with a good quantity of melted cheese (enchiladas, mac, cheeseburger).
Brownies are good, or a nice slice of fluffy white cake. Not a chocolate cake fan, usually. Mexican wedding cookies, too. Or a Kit-Kat.
And chicken ramen noodles, from a package.

I tend to eat weirdly when I'm upset - gingersnaps, cereal, kalamata olives, American cheese, and buttered toast are all favorites when I'm feeling down in the dumps. Popcorn and peanut butter saltines are also nice when I'm in need of comfort.
When I'm sick, only Campbell's chicken noodle or tomato soup satisfies. Preferably with a glass of milk and a grilled cheese sandwich.
Of course, when I'm upset and actually have the energy to cook, I throw myself into elaborate comfort-food dishes like chicken dumplings or chicken pot pie. I find the act of cooking to be enormously relaxing.

Sunny side-up eggs and buttered toast...I mean LOTS of them.

Cornbread and beans - southern style cornbread (no sweet stuff!)

Oh wow...Could be a lot on this list. Let's see:
Pasta-whether that be a creamy red sauce (can't have marinara straight up); or alfredo; or just butter, garlic, and pecc cheese-hits the spot. Of course there must be a side of homemade garlic bread or Garlic Texas Toast
Grilled Cheese
Mac and Cheese
French Fries
Cheeseburger
Guacamole
But if I wanted sweets-brownies, choc chip cookies, or ice cream

Cheese...
On crackers, melted over/in something good, grilled cheese, etc.
Potato chips...
My fave comfort food from childhood is:
2 slices toasted wheat bread, spread on both sides with cream cheese, then a package of Carl Buddigs' sliced beef or pastrami in the middle. Warm and crunchy, plus soft and salty. SO very bad for me and yet so wonderful.

Timely question - I had a really bad day yesterday so I made mac and cheese with smoked cheddar and smoked paprika. A side of sliced avocado with lime juice and lots of cracked pepper. Very comforting.

Kimchi chigae--don't know why I would find this fiery, steamy, porky, kimchi-ness so comforting, but it works every time.

I like polenta with cheese and poached eggs on bad days, but on days when I've run out of even the energy to cook, it has to be a giant bowl of plain pasta with a terrifying quantity of melted cheese.
thebasilqueen at 8:23PM on 04/30/08
I'm so on board with melted cheese. It can be on basically anything - pasta, sandwich, and I've even been known, when alone, to melt some in a bowl and dip into it with whatever is around (crackers, tortilla, whatever) or even a spoon when feeling really in need.
Also lots of things my mom made when we were kids - anything with ground turkey (that was half of what we ate before statins were invented for dad's cholesterol issues), mashed potatoes, Near East rice pilaf, salmon croquettes (wow do I love those). In fact my parents called me tonight while both my mom and I were cooking dinner, and we were both using ground turkey! and she was making mashed.

vegetable lo mein (if i'm really desperate, then a whole mess of chinese take-out seems the only appropriate way to go), breakfast burritos with hot salsa, anything involving potatoes and melted cheese...lots of cheese. finish it off with dark chocolate. hm....today was a pretty good day, but that still sounds good for dinner.

I'm gonna also have to say anything with cheese or crispy french fries and gravy. Never sweets, I do so much baking but don't eat anything with sugar so it would have to be comfort food thats savory.
joanpieroni2 at 9:29PM on 04/30/08

It could be pot roast, chicken, meatloaf, sauerbraten, pork roast.....but it has to include mashed potatoes with gravy for "makes me feel like Mom is taking care of me" comfort food.
PerkyMac at 10:59AM on 05/02/08
Chocoalte cake with chocolate frosting. Vegetable pizza, meatloaf (not in the same meal). However, if i'm really unhappy, I seek the company of my ragdoll cat, Nermal, who often shares my comfort food. He prefers meatloaf.
beth1 at 8:48PM on 05/08/08
