Best independent burger in NYC?
I am going to be in New York for a week in may and would love to try out some good burger joints, somewhere independent ideally, any ideas?

Check out the Blarney Stone, on 3rd btw. 44+45th. Ok, so it's a dive bar (as midtownlunch.com put it, "in the best sense of the word") - but the burgers are good, and the onion rings are amazing.
It's cheap too, which is a plus.

Dive bars are always good! I look forward to eating at all these places!

I used to get something called a "jackpot" at McAnn's a zillion years ago. It was a swiss burger with bacon in a basket of fries. (OMG, I never eat like that anymore!)
Another burger I knew and loved when I lived around the corner from the place was Silver Spurs Colossal cheeseburger. They were yummy.
Heard a lot about Jackson Hole burgers...anyone ever have one?

Shake Shack!

I have read a lot of conflicting reviews about Shake Shack, there seems to be a lot of hype for it, is it really that good?

shake shack is good, just not hours and hours in line good. corner bistro in greenwich village is good (their burgers are huge! fries are kinda weak sauce though).
i love brgr in chelsea - the patties are thin, but everything is delicious, and they have one of the best veggie patties i've ever had. they have tons of creative, yummy toppings and their sweet potato fries and milkshakes are also delish...oh man i'm getting hungry thinking about. brgr also sources a lot of their food from local producers, so things are fresh and tasty. now i'm super-hungry.billyburgwife at 3:10PM on 04/17/08
shake shack is good if you get there right when it opens and don't have to make that line. It's less like a restaurant burger and more like an awesome greasy, fast food burger.

Pub style burgers: Molly's in Gramercy Park or Donovan's in Woodside (Queens)
Shake Shack for that greasy fast food burger
Jackson Hole burgers are huge (1/2 lb), but unfortunately, not that good. They're steamed (put on the griddle and covered with a metal lid), which I am not too fond of, but some people do like them.

Burger Burger, down in the Financial District serves up a great certified angus burger and really crispy fries. They cook them to order right in front of you so there may be a wait but its well worth it. One thing you won't be is hungry after this!

The burgers, fries, everything at Le Parket Meridin. The line is usually long but it moves quickly. Best to go with another person so someone snags a table and someone waits in line. Not many choices but so what? You are there for the burger anyway.
I am hungry thinkig about one.....
Enjoy!

Good Burger, 2nd Ave and 43rd St. and other locations, comes with the works - lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, mayo and ketchup unless you request it otherwise. The fries are as good as McDonalds, thin and crisp every time. Have the shakes, expensive but made to order from scratch. A cheese burger with fries will cost you $10.

tinymango at 10:24AM on 04/23/08
i ate at stand once and thought it was really good, but it's awfully pricey.

oops, hit the button too soon. the burgers at keens {in the bar only} and the burgers {at lunch only} at peter luger are just superb.

-Shake Shack is great. I think there is too much garlic in the meat, but that's me.
-I also like PJ Clarks (UES).
-People say the Corner Bistro in the W. Village is the spot.
-I eat regularly at Burger in Chelsea and think it's pretty good. I think their turkey burgers are better than their regular beef burgers. And to whomever likes their veggie burgers, FYI: they use Dr. Preger's frozen patties. So, if you like them, you can buy them yourself too.
-My favorite burger joint is Dumont Burger on Bedford in Williamsburg.
