Baking Bread

I have been wanting to buy a really good bread baking cookbook. Any suggestions? I really like baking bread and of course need to add to my already packed cookbook collection. thanks in advance for any help.

The Bread Bible by Rose Levy Beranbaum is excellent. I also like the King Arthur Flour Baker's Companion, but it has more than just breads in there. Still, it has a bunch of great bread recipes, both artisinal and sandwich-style (as well as quick).

I also use The Bread Bible and the King Arthur books but my favorite is The Bread Baker's Apprentice by Peter Reinhart. Excellent book, I brought it home and read it cover to cover. I started making bread about 3 years ago after going to a bread baking class at King Arthur (highly recommended if you are ever in Vermont) and have become a bit addicted to bread baking books. The bread Baker's Apprentice is pretty detailed and involved and just about all the recipes take two days to make but well worth it I think.

I agree with the recommended choices but wanted to put in a suggestion to visit your local library and check out all the bread books they have to offer and find out what you want to buy.

Borrowing cookbooks has kept me away from buying some cookbooks I realized I wouldn't use much, or has shown me what I want to buy to always have on hand.

Crap! Itchy trigger finger...

Bernard Clayton's Book of Breads...Love it!

King Arthur Flour 200th Anniversary Cook Book

The Bread Book - Betsy Oppenneer

The Complete Book of Breads - Bernard Clayton

i love the cheese board collective's book on breadbaking, collective works.

I echo the vote for The Bread Baker's Apprentice by Peter Reinhart...the best bread book out there!
