You'll never see ____ on my grocery list
What food, beverage or ingredient would I never find written on your grocery list?
My list never includes any of these:
peas
margarine
Cool Whip
onions
fruit cocktail
cream of wheat
pop (aka soda)
Have you ever found someone's grocery list & thought.."what the heck was she/he thinking...gonna cook with that...or ?" Isn't there a site which posts the actual grocery lists found by others?

I've seen a book that has the grocery lists. I flipped through it; it getting quite boring after a while. I don't think I could say that there would ever be a particular something that would never be on my list, because you just never know. But most things like junk food are never on my list, but that doesn't mean that I never get tempted to buy something once in a while. I am very opposed to margarine, however.
malenky at 5:30PM on 03/04/08
you don't buy onions? wow i use at least 1 large one everyday!
i'lll try anything once,so nothing is really out of bounds.

There is a site that posts grocery lists it's called grocerylists.org and the book is called Milk Eggs Vodka by Bill Keaggy. I have the book sitting on my coffee table as we speak. The book breaks down lists in chapters like "bad spellrs", "sad grocery lists", "eating wrong", "paaar-ty!" and my favorite "you're so vague".
evilchefmom at 5:41PM on 03/04/08
@evilchefmom--thanks!
also not appearing on my list:
jello
frozen waffles
instant pudding boxes
Mrs. Dash blends
SE's do shop with a grocery list, right--ha!
JEP at 5:57PM on 03/04/08
i don't think that there will ever be country crock or shed's spread ( you know that fake butter in a tub) on my list.
evilchefmom at 6:02PM on 03/04/08
Frozen concentrated orange juice and garlic chopped up and preserved in water or oil.
heartnibbler at 6:09PM on 03/04/08
JEP, I'm with you on margarine, Cool Whip, cream of wheat and fruit cocktail. I do use plenty of onions in my cooking though, so it's safe to say that I always have onions on my list:-). You'll also never ever find these on my grocery list:
beets
okra
oatmeal
granola
seasoning packets of any kind
any tinned fruit or vegetables (other than whole peeled tomatoes)
chopped (or as SL calls them, PRE-chopped:-)) onions
jarred garlic
Actually, it appears that the list of stuff that will never make my list is really long:-), so I'll stop here. And hey, I do shop with a list (at least, some kind of a mental list:-)), but as I said on another thread, it doesn't mean I never deviate from the list!

Those giant bags of Tyson frozen breaded chicken. Or any Tyson product for that matter...
bitchincamero at 6:29PM on 03/04/08
a lot of my Mom's recipes call for Crisco. that will NEVER be on my shopping list!
redhead at 6:38PM on 03/04/08
Ew Crisco! Blech! Mine would never have: green beans. So, I would say I wouldn't personally buy a lot of that "fake" stuff mentioned above, but my other half loves most of that :O Remember that bagel w/cream cheese post the other day? Yeah, he couldn't wait to buy them. YUCK.
alyssazor at 6:52PM on 03/04/08
I never say never...because you never know how you might suprise yourself. Personally I don't use things like Cool Whip, but my crazy sister doesn't like 'real' whipped cream....so if she's coming over & I'm serving dessert that has cream on it, I might buy Cool Whip for her. That being said....those frozen chicken nuggets...no...they're not on my list. Neither is most processed foods, and anything with more than 1/2 of your daily sodium in it!
JEP...I gotta tell you though...jello is good for one thing....mixed with a little vodka, rum or tequila....it's makes some really tasty shots! ;-)
mepolo at 7:05PM on 03/04/08
The list of things I will never buy is too long to post. No chips, sodas, cookies, dressings, sauces, syrups, baking mixes, cereals, frozen anything... Probably the most highly processed food I buy is yogurt. I bought shortening once, but it was organic vegetable shortening.

I love finding people's grocery lists at stores. I always feel compelled to keep them in my journal. Don't ask me why, I don't know. Here's what will NEVER be on my grocery list:
Hot Dogs
Grapefruit
Watermelon
Lays Chips (Greasy- yuck!)
Liver, and
Frozen or canned green beans. They should only be eaten fresh or else they're just mush.

The top four items that are never, ever be in my grocery cart are margarine; cake/cookie/brownie mixes; jarred, minced garlic; and artificial sweetener.
K at 9:43PM on 03/04/08
I feel the need to confess - and I don't feel quite as embarassed as I did when I first visited this site, because you only know what you grew up with right? Here goes: I never tasted real butter until my late twenties...AND at that time I remember wincing and getting upset because they didn't have "margarine" at the restaurant we were at. I was also upset that I couldn't spread it and it wasn't "yellow" like it should be. Ok...go ahead everyone...snicker, chortle...burst out in laughter. I definitely know the difference now and I have seen the light. I blame my dad...he grew up on a DAIRY farm in Canada!! How did he let my mom insist on margarine?!? Must have been love eh?
So, having purged my margarine shame...my list is:
margarine
lima beans
okra
olive loaf
circus peanuts (those orange evil things)
Anything else, I may buy for others, but these items above will never be purchased by me!
Over on egullet.com they have a topic that is called "Shopping Lists/Kitchen Notebooks, are you brave enough to share?" I am not great
at listing direct links (I'll work on it) but some actually take photos of their lists and it's pretty fun/interesting.

What scares me is what I see in people's shopping carts. I saw a woman last week who had nothing worth a &^%$ in her cart. Funny thing too her kid was doing a Isadora Duncan Hines impressionist dance routine with twitching right next to the cart. He was also talking on a cell phone and jerking his hands over his head and humming. Blocking the aisle. I am a jerk in grocery stores. When your picking out crap food and your kid is doing the processed food/sugar macarena in front of me I say some shit. She looked at me and said "oh sorry about that." I walked passed her plainly stared in her cart and I said, "I bet your very sorry" and gave her a look. Nothing makes me go totally insane than mothers feeding their kids total shit food. As I walked away the kid stopped talking on the phone and said, "MOM, MOM make sure you get Pop tarts, I need Pop tarts."
Things you will never see on my list, Pop Tarts, frozen waffles, chicken nuggets, Diet soda, liver or any offal meat, Jello, Cool whip, pudding mix ( I make all the gelatin from real fruit, whipped topping from cream and my own custards and puddings) olive loaf is a crime, I don't like a lot of things probably too numerous to mention, munchos, potted meat or spam, tuna in a can, tangerines, anything that is not a beef hot dog, anything that is not hellman's mayo, tomato juice in a can.
JerzeeTomato at 11:32PM on 03/04/08
Canned carrots. Ewwwwwww.......I can see the point in putting some veggies in a can, because originally they didn't store well or had a short season. For that reason, I understand canned peas, while I continue to despise them. But carrots? Why, why why?
And speaking of canned peas, that's all mom ever used when I was a kid, and they were disgusting. The first time I had frozen peas at someone else's house, I couldn't believe they were the same thing. And I always LOVED Chinese peapods. My dad would grow them, and I'd stand at the vine and pick them and eat them. Mmmmmmmm....
Fruit cocktail.
Shredded coconut.
"Diet" anything. Unless it's specifically purchased for a guest.

Rhubarb
1stmakearoux at 9:43AM on 03/05/08
Canned veggies, liver, any salad in a bag, any frozen fish filet in a bag (yucchhh), cooking wine, canned meat.
bessfour at 9:51AM on 03/05/08
Reading the comments, reminded me of a couple things...
onions / leeks / anything similar
garlic cloves
cilantro / parsley / sawgrass
poultry
margarine -- husband uses it for something specific, so he buys it himself
alcohol for the sole purpose of drinking
peas -- methane on wheels
artificial sweetener / diet drinks
marmite / vegemite :x
natto :x -- I love slimy textures, but I can't get over the fermentation - love miso though
liver / kidney / tongue / heart / gizzard (the name of my neighbor's dog a few years back - for the longest time, I thought "giz" was short for gizmo...)
Cassaendra at 9:56AM on 03/05/08
Seitan, cilantro, margarine, turkey lunchmeat, peanut butter, grape jelly, Coke. All things I'd really rather not put in my mouth if given a choice.
thebasilqueen at 10:39AM on 03/05/08
Margarine is for sure, it should be outlawed. Grits, I've had them time and time again and never liked them, so I surely would not buy them. Butterfish, just because I'm too scared of the after-affect rumors. And then Plantains, I just have no interest in ever trying them.
jonfoxx at 10:48AM on 03/05/08
I cannot imagine putting most tinned vegetables on my list, or prefabricated meals. I once would have also said 'margarine', but it is something that my boyfriend uses on his daily sandwiches, and although it mystifies me, he prefers it to butter, so I don't quibble.
I do sometimes wonder about the things in other peoples baskets, but it's usually 'I wonder what one does with that' (over an unfamiliar item) rather than 'what are they thinking?!' (one of the few exceptions is prepared cake frosting, because whenever I've had it, I could not believe how awful it tasted).
mongoose at 10:50AM on 03/05/08
There are a few things that years ago I never would have put in my shopping cart, but my guy loves them...so I guess I can't say "never". However, these are things I haven't yet bought:
Homogonized milk (whole)
coconut
honeydew or muskmelon
liver of any sort
Dr. Pepper
tofu
lima beans
blush at 12:50PM on 03/05/08
fake cake frosting (the kind in a plastic tub)
margarine
anything containing nutrasweet
the national enquirer!! lol
sbelle at 12:55PM on 03/05/08
JEP??????? How can you cook without ONIONS!?!?!??!!?
you'll never see in my grocery list:
any canned fruit or vegetable - buy them in glass jars, never tins
canned juices - argghhhh
cilantro or recao
jalapenos or any kind of hot pepper
coffee
soft drinks
Marashino cherries
any meat products
Anything with an artificial sweetener - aspartame, nutrasweet or splenda
okra
ahhh - and how can I forget... It's soooooooo out of my mind.... but you'll never find in my grocery list any beans, especially red kidney beans and lima beans - i'll eat some of the rest, I just won't cook them

There is an auther/entertainer named Hilary Carlip that wrote what will be a very entertaining book. (It's avialable March 8). It is based on grocery lists that people found and sent to her or that she found. Then she imagined what the shopper would look like and then had funny photos taken. It's calle "a la Cart: The Secrt Lives of Shoppers". It looks really fun!
aungeinphx at 1:45PM on 03/05/08

Jerzee...it's funny that you mention the other people's carts thing....when I was at the grocery store yesterday I was watching what the kid behind me was loading onto the belt while his mom read a rag mag....Tony's pizza rolls, canned ravioli, and other processed foods, all the while complaining about the 2 packages of meat he had to unload with the Shake n' Bake!
I grew up on those foods....but they are on my list not to buy now.
btw...how do you make gelatin from real fruit?
mepolo at 6:13PM on 03/05/08
These do not appear on my grocery list, either:
bouillon cubes
corn flakes
melba toast
olives
Do you REALLY write out & take a shopping list when you go to the market?
JEP at 6:18PM on 03/05/08
When I see someone at the grocery with a cart full of &$^# I usually say something like "I want to come to YOUR house, you buy fun stuff"
And then I purchase my fresh veggies......
Hunnyoil at 7:31PM on 03/05/08
We write out a shopping list when we go grocery shopping. Whether we follow it exactly without adding anything has yet to be seen. ;)
We shop in 3 dinner increments. We'll discuss what we want to eat, what goes in them, see if we have everything, and then he reads off what we need. I write the grocery list down as I see it in the supermarket aisles, so the item list is pre-sorted as one would go up and down each aisle, to reduce the chance of missing an ingredient or saying, "aww it's on the other side, forget it."
Cassaendra at 12:04AM on 03/06/08
Jerzee, Oh wow! Did you really "give her a look?" Boy, I'll bet she'll never buy another Pop Tart as long as she lives. Good work. Score one for the good guys.
franknwine at 8:02AM on 03/06/08
Papaya and bananas are no-nos. No, no, no. It's a smell and texture thing.
Reading the comments above, it's clear that the world sure is a funny place. I grew up eating wholesome food, yet I was the kid picking the neighbor's flowers and dancing in the aisles. Thank goodness for discipline, right? The smartest person I know ate s_ _t all of his life. Has a Chemistry degree from Berkeley, yet grew-up on Pop Tarts, Ding-dongs, Wonderbread, lunchmeat and Hawaiian Punch. Was (and still is) as shy and level-headed as can be.
We are what we eat, for the most part, but one's intelligence and/or disposition doesn't seem to be altered by processed food as radically as some people suspect.
Susquehanna at 8:39AM on 03/06/08
@JerzeeTomato: I'm just as curious as mepolo about your gelatin. How do you do it with only fruit?
Susquehanna at 9:01AM on 03/06/08
You take your fav fruit juice or puree what you like and then make sure to follow the cold to hot and use gelatin sheets or unflavored gelatin.
raspberry, blueberry, mixed fruits just stay away from pineapple juice.
It is very light and refreshing and I want to bring it back sexy again. It is sooo good. You can add sparkling wine or water. You must try it. Gelatin sheets must be softened for five to ten minutes in cold liquid. Once the excess water has been wrung out of them, they will look and feel like wet plastic wrap. At that point, they can be added directly to hot ingredients without further warming to dissolve them, as is necessary with powder.
JerzeeTomato at 6:23PM on 03/06/08
what a great post, Susquehanna!
jeang at 6:19AM on 03/07/08
I'm a vegetarian, and health-food neurotic as can be, yet have many fond memories of pop tarts.
No, I wouldn't buy them now because my palate has changed. But as a tyke the molten hot center of a frosted blueberry, strawberry, and when the 'new flavors' came out (yep, I'm that old I remember when these were new, and only came 6 to a box) of chocolate or brown sugar really hit the spot.
'Nevers' are always a combination of taste, lifestyle, health goals, and culture--not purity.
My nevers would take to long to list, but I would say of things I have NEVER bought, EVER, even shopping for a sick relative or shopping to help out a busy friend with kids:
boxed mac n' cheese
cat food
pork rinds or pork of any kind
straight granola (despite my crunchy lifestyle)
coconut
fruit leather/fruit roll-ups
100 calorie packs (sorry Ed Levine, but I think they're a 'racket' ;)
Most recent 'kid food' including Booberry cereal, Dora the Explorer cereal, because I don't have kids...
olive oil (don't like even though I'm Greek so I'm definately going to bad Greek girl hell)
Ranch dressing
Sweet and Sour Sauce
more unusual cake box flavors, like carrot or banana cake
Funny but even stuff I wouldn't buy again I have 'tried once' like Cool Whip, or bought for someone else like instant mashed potato, Jello, Twizzlers, and so forth...just because something isn't on your grocery list doesn't mean it's a regular buy or even for the purchaser.
HeartofGlass at 6:47AM on 03/07/08
Thanks Jerzee....I've used powdered gelatin myself....I was thinking you made it with only fruit, and couldn't figure out how you got it to set that way!
mepolo at 1:08PM on 03/07/08
You will never see pork , ham or bacon in my shopping cart. That is for sure.

I'm a vegan, so the obvious dairy/egg and meat products are out.
I try to avoid supermarkets and stick with my local farmers market where I can get pretty much everything I need
I may be fairly healthy but there is a lot of crap that finds itself in my cart as well. I confess to enjoying canned fruit. And pre-packed cereal

canned bean sprouts
oat bran
