warning for anyone with dogs.
From previous threads I know quite a few of you have dogs, and I wanted to pass on this warning from personal experience, we all know the dangers of onions and chocolate to our dogs, but there is another that I unthinkingly, used to give is a treat. Please do not feed your dog(s) anything that contains pork! I always thought this was a safe treat as even pet stores sell pork or ham bones specifically for dogs. It is dangerous folks. According to both an emergency pet clinic and my regular vet, pork in any form can cause something called pancreatitis in dogs, not just some dogs, but all dogs. I had my doubts but, was informed that a dog can eat pork for years and never have a problem, (which mine did) and then for some reason it attacks. the symptoms include, vomiting, lethargy, distended upper abdomen and intense pain. If not treated it can lead to death. I know I'm a bit over protective of my animals, and not everyone will be as concerned. But I felt the need to pass on this warning, because I've had people tell me they knew about this and never said anything, I never knew. So if you read this please pass this warning on to anyone you know that has a dog. If the moderators feel this should be deleted, I understand and appologize for taking up space.

As I understand it, the general concensus is that pork is safe for most dogs, especially if it's been cooked, or at least frozen for a few weeks. In fact, many breeders of sled pulling dogs believe pork is the best meat to build muscle mass.
For dogs, as for people, it seems likely that variety and moderation are the keys to a healthy diet.

Well, Daisy ate a 3lb box of Gorants Chocolates and left the creams when she was 8 months old. She also consumed a box of cheap chocolate peanut butter bunnies about 4 months later, a Plen-T-Pak of Wrigley's spearmint gum, minus the wrappers, several plates of brownies, anything the kids had within the vicinity or her reach, a bag of Reese minatures, minus the foils and more people food than should be legal. She also had a bowl of tea with milk and sugar and a half a sandwich with my great grandmother every afternoon as well as an ice cream cone every night at 9pm.
She lived til she was 14.
Dont believe everything you hear.

LOL ChelleyD01. I realize the OP is being sincere in their warning, but all that candy and sandwiches made me laugh.
It reminded me of a friend who told me a story about what happened to their roast on Thanksgiving. My friend left her roast on the kitchen table to cool off before serving. When she went back into the kitchen the roast was on the floor, ripped apart, meat smeared everywhere, and her dog was still eating it. Water nearly came out of my nose when she told me that story while I was drinking a glass.

My best friend's family used to give their German Shepherd, Martisch, a five-pound bag of M&Ms every Christmas as his "Christmas present." That dog lived for 18 years... Heh.
Not that I'm advocating feeding chocolate to your dogs, obviously. Don't do it!

As a mom of a golden retriever and a shephard mix,I can honestly say there is not too much they haven't consumed while my back was turned.
From Barbie heads to lollipop lamb chops(that was the worst, wondering whether those bones would hurt them plus I had done all the trimming off the rack) PLATES of brownies at a party for one of my kids, and my one pup also ate an entire PORK roast when he was 10 weeks old,7 years later he's still a trouble maker and a cuddle bunny. Dogs survived for a
long time without us pampering them,we used to depend on them to help us.

@Cassaendra....I would love to tell you that bowl of tea and half a sandwich is a lie, but it is the Gods truth. My grandmother was English/Welsh and the world stopped at tea time. Therefore, she and Daisy were pals and one day I came in from work sick and there was the dogs bowl on the counter, Mimi pouring tea from the tea pot and adding mild and sugar, stirring and cutting a half a tomato and basil sandwich into 1/3rds. I stood in the kitchen door and enjoyed the convo that was taking place between Mimi and Daisy (very one sided, of course) and watched as my grandmother bent over to put the dogs bowl of tea and plate of sandwich down in front of her. Daisy=happier than a pig in shit. Mimi=mortified that she was busted having tea time with the dog, yet it continued for years.

RIP Daisy 8/2007

...ah, and how could I forgot my old dog, George, who was responsible for eating a pair of pantyhose, the remote control (including batteries) and an entire box of Bic razors -- with blades. That dog was tough as an old boot. Dumb, but tough.
