Vegetarian without Soy?
Today is a new start for me on vegetarian eating. Can I be a vegetarian without eating soy??

absolutely, I eat vegetarian much of the time and my girlfriend is vegan and we eat very little soy (usually the only time we eat soy is ordering tofu dishes at Asian restaurants, we never eat it at home).
I hope you like beans, because legumes will be pretty crucial for protein.
wheat gluten, seitan, and tempeh are also good sources of non-soy protein.

I was a vegetarian for a few years and I never touched soy. I ate fresh veggies everyday, pasta occasionally, rice and all kinds of other things. Tofu isn't neccessary at all.

Absolutely! I was raised vegetarian (and still am) and I never ate soy until I was in high school (when my mom discovered tofu). Lentils and beans are a great source of protein, and you can definitely make satisfying meals with them along with veggies, grains, and lots of great spices and seasonings. If you'd like some inspiration, check out my blog - it's full of vegetarian recipes and there are plenty that don't contain soy. raspberry eggplant

Of course you can-- the suggestions above are great ones. :) Eating legumes is pretty necessary, but honestly, it's an excuse to eat hummus. But why scorn the humble tofu? It's delicious.

I think tofu products have gotten a bad rap. I love soy vanilla milk ssooo delish. I also love they way tofu tastes like anything you want depending on what flavors you use. You can fry it till it's crisp and it is delish but i am not gonna try to change your mind:) just thought i would mention it is good.

Not just tofu. Soy beans, miso, soy milk and so on....lots of good soy stuff in the world.
I'm presuming you've an allergy to soy?

Are you going lacto-ovo vegetarian?
It's very easy to avoid soy even on a vegan diet. There are non-soy milks (almond, rice, hemp). Beans and nuts (along with a diet heavy on those greens!) can provide all of the protein you need,
I would caution against trying to rely on milk and cheese as your primary protein and calcium sources, just because you'll probably end up with a too cheese-heavy diet. Try to get most of your protein from plants.

of course you can... I am a vegetarian and eat very little soy myself. There are so many alternatives out there... I am a lacto-vegetarian, so I do have reagular milk and rennet-free cheeses.
I do eat a lot of nuts, yogurt, kefir, dark leafy greens, some beans to get my protein besides the ocassional soy treat.

For sure - bulk up on quinoa and other whole grains if you're worried about protein.

Of course! Just make sure to check labels if you have an allergy; soy can sometimes be found where you least expect it!
