True Confession is good for the Soul. My dilemma?

I can not stand rice. No way, no how! I even pick it out of my sushi. Am I all alone here?

Why would you even get sushi if you didn't like rice?

Although I don't think I've ever known anybody who outright refused to eat it, I have known many who were not fond of rice. As far as I can tell, as with so many things food-related, it seems to be largely about experience. My ex and his mom did not care for rice, although they'd certainly eat it if it was served. Apparently, they'd never eaten it growing up, and therefore had never developed a taste for it or its texture.

I agree with Chaoss... if you don't like rice, why order sushi when it, by definition, is a rice ball? Why not simply order sashimi? When my middle-schooler was little, she didn't like any grain-based foods (bread, cereal, cake, rice, etc.). She'd pick the rice out of her sushi, too, so we just started getting her sashimi. She now eats sushi, but she's still happier with a sashimi plate.

Order sashimi... Most of the time the quality of the fish is better anyways.

RIce looks like maggots. Blech.

If I've learned anything here on SE, it's that we all have foods we love and foods we can't stomach.

I always order fried rice when I get Chinese take-out, and the entree comes with white rice. I never know what to do with it. Sushi is something I don't eat. I always think about mixing in some mushrooms and peas. or even making my own fried rice, but - truth be told - I usually end up pitching it. I need to get some recipes like chicken and rice (that I never make) and find a use for it. I hate wasting food.

I can't imagine how long it would take to pick out each grain of rice. LOL

I really like everything else that goes into sushi and I like sashimi. I do not order it often, but when my friends want to go out for sushi, I want to go too. Hey, they don't call me "crazy" spice for nothing! We went to dinner a couple of weeks ago and the special of the night was cioppino over lobster risotto. They had no pasta! That is just wrong.

Billions of people rely on rice as the staple of their daily diet. So...yeah, pretty much alone.

when I was growing up my mom NEVER cooked rice. my dad was strictly meat(beef) and potatoes. I had rice once before the age of 13 at my aunts house and hated it. turns out it was that horrible 60 sec rice yukkkk. the first time I had real rice was in a risotto in Providence and it changed my life! so sorry Crazy another vote to set you apart. ;)

My father is so bad that he won't even eat anything that *looks* like rice. So, that elimiates rosa marina pasta, orzo, couscous, and anything close to that. It's incredible! And you knwo why? Because once, while in the Army, about forty years ago, he tried rice once and didn't like it. Strange....

But, i guess that everyone has their thing. I myself have never voluntarily eaten forzen or tinned peas. Ever.

You're not alone, I hate rice also, and I will dissect anything that has come into close contact with it.

On the rice issue, I can't say that I'm with you.

But on the issue of quirky food preferences, you are sooo not alone :)

I love rice - white , not brown! To PerkvMac... I always order fried rice when at a Chinese restaurant and take the plain white rice supplied home and place it in my freezer in about 1/2 cup - 1 cup portions. Great to add to homemade chicken or beef soup, use as a filling for stuffing green peppers or salisbury steak. Once I learned to cook rice properly, I never again resorted to the Uncle Ben's Instant version. I make a rice pilaf mix with dried onion soup mix, basil, parsly, and rice which is always ready 20 minutes after I decide to have rice for dinner.

@martinscot.......great suggestions! I can't believe freezing never crossed my mind, because I freeze nearly everything. Obviously, I don't make rice often, but I agree with you about the instant.......awful! I'm a noodle, pasta, potato girl, but I like rice now and then. Your ideas are terrific and I thank you! I've been yearning for stuffed cabbage (Happy St. Patty's Day to all), and I'm going out for Chinese tomorrow. Perfect timing!

My husband didn't care for rice because all he was exposed to, being from Middle America, was Uncle Ben's. I told him, no wonder you can't stand rice, I wouldn't even feed that to a dog. Well, I'd never feed a dog rice anyway...but that's besides the point.

When he moved in with me, he began liking rice because it was REAL rice -- medium-grain Kokuho Rose...no, I don't work for Kokuho!

I don't mind Jasmine rice or sticky rice, but I can't stomach fried rice, seasoned pilaf, basmati, or brown rice because they are typically too strong in flavor or are salty. This defeats the (my) purpose of having the rice to begin with -- as an offset to salty or strong flavored foods.

Haha -- that remark about maggots reminds me of a childhood story my mother told me that occurred when she was ~5 years old. Her older sister was distraught after finding a corpse with maggots. At dinner, as soon as my aunt would pick up her rice bowl, my mother would whisper, "maggots."

In the end, both of them wouldn't be able to eat. My aunt would lose her appetite and run off to puke. My mother got scolded severely and sent away from the table. She admitted that she got a kick out of that a few times...

My SIL has a Japanese mother. They both make rice with every dinner. My brother does most of the cooking, but even if they have spaghetti, she makes (and they all love and eat...) rice. I think it's cultural and habit, as well as what tastes good and/or comforting to you.

My ex and I went fishing one time and caught one blowfish. Not enough to cook. We left it in a bucket of water on the porch. Next morning there were all these "worms" in there. A fisherman could probably say what they actually were. That night, we went out for Chinese and the sprouts looked just like the worms. I couldn't eat. Just that one night, though. I eat them all the time now.

Nothing wrong with not liking a particular food.

However, really good rice is completely different from take out rice, or boxed rice.

I grew up eating rice, but even I can't stand take-out rice (gluey, mushy and clumping together, soaked in its own sweat in those paper cartons which are TERRIBLE for keeping food in, by the way).

Boxed rice frequently has this weird plasticky off-taste. I couldn't eat the Chinese food at my college cafeterias because it was always that prepackaged stuff.

Even restaurant sushi rice isn't that great unless they've just prepared a fresh batch that hasn't been coagulating.

@fuuchan - Coagulating rice, ugh!

@crazyspice - hahah, bad rice is pretty bad, all right...

@All - I will stick with pasta, but thanks for trying.

@ChelleyD01 - Wow! That is a new description for me.

@ccbweb - Just think, with me not eating rice, there will be more for the Billions who really depend on it.

@Southern_bella - Thank you for not letting me be "All Alone"

@fuuchan - What can I possibly add to that!

Cassandra, a corpse...really?

Rice seems so innocent. Its mild, its white, its starchy, it goes with so many things.
Hmmm, I've never known anyone who wouldn't eat rice except one of my dogs. I had to give her plain, poached skinless, boneless chicken and white rice for a few days (stomach issues). She ate all the chicken and pushed all the rice onto the floor. I was amazed at her muzzle dexterity.

btw, I'm NOT comparing you to my dog! ;)

@wookie - That is a relief!
