Suggestions for St. Thomas, USVI?
We're headed to St. Thomas in the USVI for a week (15th - 22nd) and I was hoping that someone would have some suggestions for where to eat. We have a time share and have generally stuck with cooking for ourselves in the past, but this time, I'd like to try some local restaurants. Any suggestions?
thanks!

Make sure to try the breakfasts at Gladys' Cafe in Royal Dane Mall, although their other meals are nice, too.

I lived on St. Thomas for 4 years. If you go to Gladys' which is downtown, make sure you have the chicken salad that has the pine nuts in it - YUM! Also check out "Craig n' Sally's" which is in Frenchtown. Should cost $$$ but an excellent wine list. There is also a German rest. in Frenchtown that is good but I can't remember the name. Stay in town for rest. and take the ferry over to St. John Island (20 min.) for a nice meal in the little town.

We stayed at the Wyndham Sugarbay resort. There is an Italian restaurant there called Tuscany and it was delicious.

Definitely take the ferry to St. John! There is a hamburger joint on the other side of the island (you can get there by taxi) called Skinny Legs that has burgers you'll crave the rest of your life. Also Woody's Seafood Saloon (closer to the ferry landing) has great food, and a happy hour that has people pouring out into the street. Both islands have Duffy's Love Shack which has good caribbean eats and fun drinks if you like the sort of thing.
St. John is a lot less tourist-y and has some gorgeous beaches, my sister got married there and I can't wait to return, though I wouldn't turn down a week on St. Thomas either--I just can't remember the names of where we've eaten! Have a great trip!

I'm seconding bobcatsteph on taking the ferry to St. John! Not only is it less crowded and has great food, the snorkeling and scuba diving there is WAAAY better than on St. Thomas! The last time I was there, I went to a great restaurant called The Lime Inn, that was a lot of fun and served tasty food. http://limeinn.com/ is the website I think.
My parents actually had their honeymoon on St. John, and my family went there to vacation several times when I was a kid, and we loved it more and more every time! Get a really good guide book and take the time to explore all the different beaches over there--there are some really beautiful gems, and few enough people that you'll feel like you have the beach to yourself.

Try the North Drop on Hull Road. Somewhat secluded, great seafood, and spectacular view of Magens Bay.

My best friends took me to St. Thomas for my college graduation present. As you say you tend to do, we made our own food for the most part (along with daily White Russians), but we had a few good meals out, too. Definitely check out Agave Terrace for a fantastic, more high-end meal, with breathtaking views! We also had a great meal downtown, but unfortunately I can't remember what the restaurant was called. Ask some locals where they like to eat; that's what we did.
Woody's in St. John's was pretty good, try the conch fritters.
Have fun!

Everyone has given such great recommendations!
When we were there last, we didn't make it out of the Ritz Carlton. I think they put something into the frozen drinks to make you uber-lazy - too lazy to leave the "compound."

along the same lines, if anybody has recommendations for St. Croix, USVI, I'll be there in May ..

Girl's weekend this year is in Negril Jamaica. Any thoughts?

The Mafolie Hotel which I believe is in Charlotte Amalie has a great bar on top of a hill which overlooks the harbor. Great views and an amazing mango margarita.

I lived in St. Croix for 10 months (July 2006 - April 2007), but didn't make it over to St. Thomas. Restaurant suggestions in STX: Villa Morales near Frederiksted (authentic native food, delicious), Rum Runners in downtown Christiansted, Duggan's in the east end (near where I lived), The Cultured Pelican (in the same condo complex where I lived in the east end (Coakley Bay), very good Italian food, great view of Buck Island, great Sunday morning breakfasts - I highly recommend the Pelican Eggs), Tutto Bene in downtown Christiansted (EXCELLENT Italian food, steaks, chops) and last but not least, Breezes... make sure to order a Painkiller... the best on the island.
Have a great time! I'm jealous as hell... can't wait to go back myself!

I forgot a few more in STX... Cheeseburgers in Paradise (east end) for great burgers, frozen drinks and music, The Deep End (also east end) for great food & fun (crab races, etc.), and my absolute favorite place to be on a Friday night... the Full Moon beach bar in Cane Bay (north shore) - all you can eat peel & eat shrimp - skip the corn but make sure to get two johnny cakes also great music & fun!
For St. Thomas... sorry, but all I can recall is eating lunch at Arby's while sitting at the bar and ordierng a beer with it (only in the VI). I loved it at the time. What a memory.

hey everyone - thanks so much for the suggestions! We head out on Saturday and now I'm looking forward to trying some of your recommendations. I'll post when we get back to let you know where we ate and give you some reviews.

You need to go to "COUSINS" in downtown charlotte amalie. Local food prepared by locals, it's like 3 streets back from the main drag but it is worth the hunt. Great food! I was there last summer... you lucky dog! Bon Chanc:)
