RADISH. Love it OR Leave it??

I was so fascinated by the strong opinions expressed by SEers regarding celery (shrimp salad with or w/o celery) that I was interested to see the general opinion of a stronger tasting veg - the lovely red radish.

I LOVE radishes! Occasionally if I'm making a salad I'll put a few aside, sprinkle them with salt and eat them right then and there!
Generally followed by a few Tums.

I love crisp and crunchy - add a little spicy and dip in sea salt and I'm so happy! I think they're delicious to eat like candy, but I also love them in a salad. One of these days, I want to try roasting them. I've never tasted a cooked radish - have you?

good for garnish in my book, other than that..... uhhh.... cutting in half and jamming under an off balance table leg?!

I love radishes. My family used to grow them when we lived in Indiana. They barely made it out of the garden before they were gone. My brother is the same way....between the two of us we can go through a huge bag in a day or two.

Definitely not a fan - and I think they do horrible things to one's breath.

Not a fan. Only really use in potato salad for a bit of color and crunch. Must dice pretty small or my boys will pick them all out!

I don't eat them, but steamed they turn a lovely pale pink and are pretty and popular on my crudite trays; also made a lovely buerre blanc for salmon that had shallots, grated radish, and grated horseradish....

Love, Love, Love...they're great fresh or pickled in salads or just with honest to goodness real butter and sea salt. A happy, crunchy little pick-me-up!

Lovely if they're cold and crunchy, otherwise, pass. I never noticed an effect on my breath, I'll be looking out for it, next time I eat some.

I love radishes, while my husband hates them with passion, which, frankly, puzzles me - until I met him, I never imagined something as trivial as radishes (to me) could trigger such strong feelings!

especially after discovering the green bean and radish salad recipe right here on serious eats, i adore them

I am not a radish eater. I have tried, but it's just to sharp and bitter and biting for me.

Love all radishes!
Matter of fact, I have a bunch in my fridge with dirt still on 'em. Tonight some will get a washing and some butter and salt. The rest will go in salad or sliced thin and put into all kinds of sandwiches. Love the crunch and the bite.
Goes great on a rare roast beef sandwich with sprouts & horsey mayo or Plugra butter on a crusty, crusty baguette.

eat 'em like grapes. I thought I was the only one to sprinkle them with salt and pop them in my mouth. I feel so tightly knit to my SE family ;~)

I like them in small doses, dipped in either olive oil or sweet butter and sprinkled with salt.

Radishes are great in a salad dressed with Ranch dressing. Other than that I've struggled to find them yummy. I've heard the French eat them on bread with butter but haven't tried it. Has anyone else?

On bread with a good butter and some Maldon salt! I'm drooling. My sister-in-law swears that roasted radishes are amazing. I haven't tried them that way yet.

I adore radishes... loved to just slice them thin and eat as a snack.

I love radishes, especially marinated in vinegar and a little salt and sugar.

What's funny is that last year I grew radishes in my garden and they turned out EXTREMELY spicy, so much so that I couldn't really eat them without having tears in my eyes. Isn't that hilarious!

i love them! esp in a salad with avocado and goat cheese.

@Carosone - not sure if this is true or not...but my family always told me that the hotter the radish, the less water it had when it was growing.

love love love! and they come in so many pretty varieties! plus, can't eat korean food w/o radishes.

@jcrisco..........that makes sense, since it's mostly water.

Mmm. I love radishes. My favorite way to have them is sliced over a bit of french bread and butter with sprinkled with a kiss of kosher salt and black pepper.

the koreans know how to make them edible, but i sure don't.

The water to heat ratio is certainly true, speaking as someone who grew up with a family garden and now continues the tradition. That being said, I loathe and despise those little hell-rocks.

When my mother was pregnant with me she got a peculiar brand of morning sickness that allowed her to only eat radishes washed down with hot tea on a regular basis. Everything else made her sick. I may not have even been born yet, but 45 years later, I still hate those things.

@callchef........"hell-rocks"........LOL. Thanks for the huge guffaw.
