Protein Powder?

While I was responding to elizabeth786 and the strawberry question, it got me thinking about the smoothies I make every morning. I use organic whey protein and stevia sweetener (if the fruit seems tart). Do you make smoothies or supplement your diet with protein powders? How do you feel about whey protein?

Good topic crazyspice! As a vegetarian, I have been looking for a good protein powder that I could use in drinks/smoothies that didn't have a strong taste (as I find many of the soy proteins do). I've been trying to find a small size I could buy to see if I liked the brand, before commiting to a giant container. I'm interested in seeing what others use/like!

I'm with with you guys!
....does anyone have one they recommend? I would love to make my morning smoothie a little more packed with good stuff- and also want something that isn't too vitaminy- or earthy tasting. I've been to scared to commit to the big containers as well.

Any seroius eaters with experience in this realm?

I actually use whey protein (natural vanilla) from Whole Foods. I use fat free milk and fruit ( I freeze my fruit for this). I add a little filtered water if the fruit doesn't blend easily. It does not taste earthy or vitaminy. I have been using it for quite a while and the only thing that changes, is the fruit of the season.

I really, really enjoy the Jay Robb line of whey protein powders. For a not so large amount of calories, you get a good wallop of protein. His powders mix well and are sweetened with stevia. The chocolate is my favorite! It tastes like chocolate malted milk. No earthiness or off-tastes.

Dream Protein in Rich Dutch Chocolate is actually so so so so good. If you want something to add into your smoothies the Creamy French Vanilla flavor is perfect! I don't think it comes in small sizes but I promise you'll like it, there's really nothing not to like! I was more than surprised to taste it and it was actually super tasty!

Really yummy wake-you-up morning shake: The chocolate dream protein, peanut butter and banana (and ice lol). OMG so ridiculous!

also I'm not sure but the website on the container led me to here:
http://www.firstshake.com/
where I think you can buy it online if you can't find it in stores. That also has all the info about it.

And one more thing, When I got mine I got a little shaker thing that came with it, and in the mornings, I'll drop some ice cubes in there and then shake it all up so that it's cold when I drink it. Super fantastic!

elizabeth786 - Have you heard of, or tried hemp protein? Check out http://www.manitobaharvest.com - its a Canadian company, their proteins are all 100% pure hemp - no added anything.

I've always liked Spirutein .. even though it's soy, I always thought it tasted wonderful and comes in tons of flavors. I usually just mix it with skim milk, it's like dessert for me. :) http://www.spiru-tein.com/

I find those soy protein powders too harsh on my digestive system too. I was training with a personal trainer and he pushed me to take those powders and my stomach got out-of-whack...

What I do then is make my morning smoothies with fruit (fresh or frozen), milk , soy milk or yogurt (which have between 6 and 10 grams of protein a serving) and add a scoop of OATMEAL, straight out of the container. I find this adds protein (about 4 grams) and fiber (both soluble and insoluble) to my smoothie. So I get plenty of protein and fiber in the morning with one simple delicious drink.

thanks everyone for the suggestions!

um...now that just sounds way too healthy for me. I'm lucky if I get up early enough to pour a cup of coffee, much less make a smoothie.

I second the Whole Foods Protein powder and I tend to switch it up between Whey and Soy. Nothing better than a frosty smoothie for breakfast in the summer!
