NYC Lower East Side recommendations, please!

Hi, NYC food-savvy people!
We are a group of 15, needing to make a reservation in the LES. We were originally going to Café Mogador, but they can only accommodate a group of 12. Looking for something cheap, as we are mainly writerly, new entrepreneurial types -- and also with vegetarian options (one gal is also gluten/wheat-free, egg-free, and nut-free, in addition to being a vegetarian, but I won't ask you to go there...)

I don't have any LES recommendations, but the best place I've found gluten/wheat-free, egg-free, dairy-free, nut-free vegetarian food is at Risotteria in the W. Village, and the rest of you would be reasonably happy there too. I think the entire restaurant only accomodates about a dozen people, though.

Hi! It's not on the LES, but in the East Village is Counter, which is great and has delicious veggie and vegan fare. I've brought plenty of non-vegetarians there and they've all liked it:

Counter is good but definitely not cheap!

How about Kate's Joint on the corner of Ave B and 4th Street? Inexpensive and really yummy comfort food, all of which is vegetarian - and all of the carnivores I've taken there have loved it. However, they don't take reservations.

I also think that getting a reservation for a group of 15 is going to be hard - many places will ask you to reserve their private space (if they have one) for a group that large and that will be $$$.

(BTW, Mogador isn't on the LES...it's in the East Village.)

what about Back Forty? They have large trestle tables for groups.

You're right. East Village is what I should've said.
Also true that making a reservation for 15 is going to be tough.
Perhaps we should just take our chances with Café Mogador and hope that 3 people don't show!

Thanks for the Risotteria suggestion -- I definitely want to take my friend there. Unfortunately, they told me everything but the pizza is made with eggs. But at least she could have pizza, a treat she doesn't get often!

Counter is wonderful, thanks, and I will check out Kate's Joint.

Back Forty -- great idea, dbird. Thank you!

another east village idea: caracas (7th st between 1st and a). it's very small, though, so maybe it wouldn't work out. i'm also partial to frankie's spuntino. i've only been to the one in brooklyn, but they have an outpost at 17 clinton street. kuma inn on ludlow is also great, but they don't have many veggie options.

My favorite cheap eat in the LES is Tiny's Giant Sandwich Shop (they have salads that your friend could probably eat), but if you bring 15 people you'll probably take up the whole place. :O Good if you want to spend less than $10 per person though, hehe.

I'd go to a place in Chinatown with a group that big. Just take over one of those huge banquet tables.

Making resos for 15 isn't always easy. Perhaps if your group is willing to be split into two parties (one of 7, and one of 8) it would be easier to get into the restaurant of your choice.
Good luck and have fun.

Caracas only holds 15 people in total, and that's including the cook, the hostess and the toilet!
