Kitchen Gadgets - Chapter Two

Do you have a favorite kitchen tool or special gadget that you have had for years? Is there a contemporary replacement for your old kitchen tool or gadget? Would you be willing to part with the "old" to bring in the "new"?

Old manual can opener from who knows when, probably picked up at a garage sale about 7 years ago. The electric ones were unnecessary, and a new one from IKEA failed to do the trick. Alas, I still use the old, albeit broken one.

A potato masher that my grandmother bought c. 1950. The painted wood handle has no paint on it anymore (which is a good thing since it probably contained lead) and I've had to reattach it more than once. So I guess I only still have it for sentimental reasons.

A jar opener that my mother recently handed over to me for sentimental reasons. It's a smallish, rather triangular flat piece of metal with a slightly turned surface at one of the "corners." Apparently, she used it to open my baby food jars more than a half century ago. It might even be imprinted with the Gerber name, I can't recall. The point is, ever since my surgery three years ago, I have had even more trouble than usual opening jars, and this thing rocks! It's irreplacable, in my world.

Would you count a piece of cookware? If so, i inherited a square cast-iron griddle with an angled rim (about 45 degrees). It's the best. I can bake biscuits on it, cook a steak, or make pancakes (among a million other things). I use it every day, and, no, i would not replace it (it's no longer made).

Pastry blender. I use it for making pie crusts and biscuits. I always had trouble making pie crusts until I stopped using my food processor and went back to the pastry blender -- now they come out great! I wouldn't part with it.

@ CookiePie - Is your pastry blender the type with the wires or flat blades? I've had one with the wires forever - actually it fell apart about ten years back and I replaced it with the exact same model from WS. I hate dragging out my food processor just to make a pie or tart shell, even if it does a good job.

Mine is a whisk that I got from Williams-Sonoma a hundred years ago. It's small and looks exactly like this. It's great for small amounts of salad dressing or for mixing up a couple of eggs. I probably use it more than any other gadget in my kitchen.

We did a "monthly mouthful" this March asking all our favorite food bloggers their answer to the question "What is your favorite cooking gadget?" Here is what they said
