KFC now grilling chicken ... your thoughts?

My own thoughts, with quotes from Col. Harland Sanders' autobiography, are at:

I think the ship's sailed on this one? Long ago.

And, from the quotes you list, all we can really learn is that the Col. wants people to fry the fried chicken the way he did and not serve old food.

@ccbweb, it's all over the web today, i.e., current news.

A couple points: "Storefront signs will be altered to promote the new product — called Kentucky Grilled Chicken", meaning they're purposefully getting away from "Kentucky Fried Chicken". And I think his writing, "I don’t want nobody foolin’ around with his own ideas" should be self-explanatory.

Went to KFC about six weeks ago; first time in four years. It was awful and I had fried chicken. It was OK, but old. I also had a side order of chicken sticks or somesuch and they were putrid -- imagine the worst parts of a factory-chicken hacked up and with an attempt to cover up their meaty awfulness with too much sweet sauce.

I remember KFC from when we went to the Mainland in about 1968ish. The whole ohana got hooked with one visit.

Times change, both in quality and in taste. I guess they can grill what they want and the market will level them (one way or another). As for me, no more KFC, either way.

Ate two times Popeyes chicken in the last couple months. Better, but not so good as any kine homemade chicken.

I didn't mean to imply that its not current news; rather I meant that KFC hasn't been what the Col. started for so long that new changes/additions aren't a lot different than many prior changes.

@ccbweb, couldn't agree with you more there. It just drives me crazy that as soon as founders of these places pass on, there's zero respect for what made them start in the first place. To me though, this particular move seems a sword through the old Colonel's heart.

Had KfC once at a friends home it was okay ..........not my mothers!!!!

You know, Kentucky Fried Chicken actually used to be pretty good, years ago. Then they became KFC and then they clearly stopped caring about turning out a decent product. I had some a couple of months ago. It was disgusting. The actual flesh of the bird was revolting. I can't figure out what form of cooking would produce such slimy, mushy meat. Oh my gosh. I don't know that I'd trust KFC to come up with a tasty grilled chicken if I they can't even come up with tasty fried chicken anymore.

Will they really be grilling (I doubt it) or will they be heating up a pre-grilled piece of chicken or a pre-cooked-with-fake-grillmarks-and-added-seasoning-piece-of-chicken? Hmmmm.....

I can only think of one use for KFC and that is a substitute for a fiber rich diet. They can grill all they want but I'll still pass!

This grilling stunt is designed to woo those who don't eat fried food (like me). It will attract "mixed" families - families comprised of both fried food eaters and non-fried food eaters. It's the "everyone wins" philosophy.

Anyone remember when KFC tried to tout itself as health food during the low carb heyday? They got sued. The first thing they did that really left a foul taste in my mouth was to legally change the name from Kentucky Fried Chicken to KFC. Did they think people would forget the chicken was fried???

I don't care what you do, just do it well.

Few people know that the Col. had a cousin who was also marketing fried chicken. The Col. went in one direction and the cousin in another. The cousin's place is called Lee's Fried Chicken. There is one location in Richmond, VA, and maybe 11 restaurants total. Very good fried chicken and sides, all actually looks like very good food, all served piping hot. I often thought that Lee's chicken is what KFC could be if it had not turned into fast food.

There is no consistency between one KFC or another. Some of them are better than others. More often than not though it has tendency to taste like grease on a bone. Let's face it, the only reason any of us go to KFC is for the fat, salt and grease!!

huney_bumper is right, KFC's chicken is definitely something you 'rent'...if I pick off the skin I'm ok but if not, well, I won't go into any more detail.

@Wookie- is that Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken or just Lee's Fried Chicken? There used to be LFR in Northern Indiana but I'm not sure if that was a local or national chain.

@LunaPier- good to see you posting again, thought you'd disappeared! Do you think the Wendy's chain has gone down hill since the passing of Mr. Thomas? Just curious.

@AuntJone--Oh yeah, you're right it IS Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken...I would order the Famous Recipe.

Yum foods is a big hitter in the fast food market. They know how to brand and they know how to appeal to hungry people. I will wait and watch.
