I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?

I never have liked chocolate. The darker the chocolate the more I dislike it. Needless to say, finding desserts I like is more difficult than I like since I have a crazy sweet tooth. However, I do admit I enjoy white chocolate...to a point.

I know I can't be the only person on Serious Eats who just can't seem to understand people's intense love for chocolate....

I can only wish I hated chocolate

I don't care for chocolate (or most sweets) either but will, on occasion, eat white chocolate. I suppose this says something about white chocolate. :P

I may eat white chocolate cookies once every 5 years...usually picking out the macadamia nuts in them. Had too much mac nuts while growing up - my grandmother had a macadamia nut tree in the backyard. I used to know someone who managed a Mrs. Fields so he would make a tray of white chocolate cookies for me w/o the macadamia nuts. =)

I love chocolate but it makes a mess out of my face so I mostly avoid it. I know about all the research that says chocolate and fried foods don't make you break out but apparently my face didn't get the memo.

i like to eat chocolate on occasion but am not very interested in chocolate flavored desserts, for some reason. and i infinitely prefer milk chocolate. dark tastes nasty to me.

Although I do like very good quality dark chocolate (the darker the better), it's by no means a fixation or a passion for me. I seldom crave it, and can pretty much always pass it up. On those rare occasions when I actually do want something sweet, chocolate is almost never what comes to mind. I hardly ever order a dessert involving chocolate.

I do keep good dark chocolate on hand, and will eat a square of it at night when I want something sweet. But that's mostly because it's got some health benefits, and I know I'll be happy with just that one square. It's not something I'm at risk of overindulging in, so it's a good choice for me.

If it was no longer available, I wouldn't much miss it.

I like chocolate, but I don't crave it. There was a period of 5-6 years when I didn't want any or enjoy it at all if served. This went along with an aversion to tomato sauces or cooked tomatoes - fresh were fine. Fortunately, this all went away!

I like milk chocolate only. I like dark if it is really good dark otherwise it is just bitter to me. As far as desserts go, I am more a key lime pie or pecan pie kinda girl. I have never tried chocolate as a savory before buy i know the recipes are out there.

jami52 - I don't think you are the only one, given comments that have gone before on this and other threads. I'm not surprised that you can tolerate or enjoy white chocolate, considering it's not really chocolate at all, but is considered a "confection" that, (please correct me if I'm wrong on this, anyone) doesn't actually contain cacao.

I'm sorry, I can't really identify with your anomaly; a love for chocolate is in my genepool. But my husband does not align himself with that fixation and rarely has the desire for chocolate. I have had the discussion with the mom on record about the gestation period. Apparently there was a chocolate deficiency at that time. I cannot relate to or understand this phenomenon, yet I deal with it. I have, in fact, become so comfortable and unintimidated about the SO not inclined to chocolate or sweets, that I now have no compunction whatsoever about ordering a yummy dessert and taking my time to savor it while he sits and cools his heels. And watches me eat with relish. And waits....

I did get the chocolate gene, obviously, but am liberal enough to tolerate the chocolata non-gratas out there, too. I'm married to one.

I do not eat chocolate or dessert for that matter. When we make 'tini's I do not rim my personal glass with sugar. The hubs, well that is another whole story. He got the sweet gene. I will take a tawny port, please. That is as sweet as I will go, sometimes.

@frederika - you are absolutely correct.

I am really not a fan of chocolate. Every now and then I like a few bites of really good quality dark chocolate, but not much more than that. And I HATE chocolate cake. Gross.

I'm not a big fan of milk chocolate, but i do enjoy some dark chocolate from time to time. Like others though, I don't miss chocolate if I don't get it.

How is it humanly possible to hate chocolate?

i'm not sure i've ever heard those words used in the same sentence in that context before.

I used to be a chocolate lover but at some point in my life, I just had enough. Every dessert being offered was chocolate, the best chocolates always seemed to the ones filled with chocolate (at least this was the line), etc. etc. I still like chocolate well enough but just would rather have some other flavors in my life!

Nope, as you can see you're not the only one. I've never cared much for chocolate, and I don't have a sweet tooth at all, but on occasion I'll have something sweet and if it has chocolate it has to be milk chocolate and contain something else to "counteract" the chocolate. I don't even care much for white chocolate although I used to.

I credit my brother for giving me my non-chocolate affliction, when we were little kids playing outside, he took dirt and water and mixed them in a mixing bowl and told me he was making a cake, then asked me if I wanted to lick the spoon, which of course I did, what kid wouldn't? YUCK!

Brothers are awful : (

I don't think there's anything wrong with not liking chocolate (more for me!).

I love chocolate ,,,,,,,, since I also have a sweet tooth trust me there are lots of other sweet desserts made with out chocolate like cheese danish an almomd bear claws crumb cake an the list can go on !!!!

All the women I work with -- and most of the men -- are chocoholics. I can do without it, have no chocolate cravings, am never even tempted. However, bring out a bag of chips or salted nuts, and I'm on 'em like white on rice.

I think i missed the chocolate loving gene
I think I just missed the sweet tooth gene as I rarely eat sweet things, except fruit.

I hate chocolate too.

I find I can eat it but I must eat something afterwords to get rid of the taste.

I like chocolate milk and candy bars or those Reeses cups.

But I hate chocolate cake, ice cream, chucks of chocolate alone or in ice cream. Also I hate dark chocolate. The darker the worse because then it's harder for me to get rid of the aftertaste.

I once has this coffee flavored chocolate. Talk about mixing the worst of two worlds. I drank Sprite which usually gets rid of the bad taste but it didn't work. I drank everything in the house. I don't drink coffee, the smell makes me sick so....

I'm just the opposite--I ONLY really like chocolate, now. When I was younger I adored jelly beans and fruit jelly candy as well, but my appetite for those has disappeared, sadly, with age. Ditto for vanilla ice cream, milk chocolate, and icing.

The older I get, the more l adore dense, dark chocolate, to the exclusion of all other desserts.

So no, I can't relate! In fact, right now my favorite dessert is a square or two of 88% cacao dark chocolate with a teaspoon of almond butter, cashew butter, or natural peanut butter and perhaps some good jam.

Chocolate is the nectar of life!

Still, this proves one person's nectar is anopther's bain. I guess this just leaves more for me! LOL!

I only like Milk Chocolate and White Chocolate. That's it. Darker then that and it's way too bitter for me...Can't stand it.

I never had a taste for it until I was pregnant, then it went away and then I turned forty and it's back with a vengeance!!!

I thought I was the only person who is not a huge chocolate lover. I am not alone! Chocolate cake is ok depending on how it is made (I like mine). I am not likely to just eat a chocolate bar but a good quality chocolate IS better then a cheap bar. I perfer milk or white over dark anytime.

when i was little i hated choc. would give away easter candy etc. then puberty struck..... chocolate, coffee and wine, three ways to make me happy. there is another way, but food is only involved when things get really kinky ;-)

I don't really care for milk chocolate. I love semi-sweet and dark chocolate. Can't get enough. I keep 60% chocolate chips in the refrigerator for snacking.

But why do you hate it? I can understand not liking it. Or disliking it. But hating? That's pretty strong language to use for something like a food.

I hate chocolate too!!!!!!!! Can't stand chocolate bars, chocolate milk, chocolate cake, chocolate chips, chocolate anything. It's probably one of the bitterest, worst-tasting foods I can imagine. In fact it tastes like it has no sugar in it. I admit I'm a mutant but I'm glad to see that at least there are a couple of others like me on the net, I haven't met any before. Maybe we should create a support group. And for all you indignant chocolate lovers on this forum, I apologize, I really have no ill-feelings against the stuff. And anyway, that leaves more for you, right?

being diabetic i can't have chocolate often. i miss it like crazy. when i die i want a stash of hershey's to go along for the ride...lol

Love chocolate. Hate what it does to my face. And don't tell me chocolate doesn't give you acne, my face didn't get that memo.

I like milk chocolate as well. Dark chocolate just has a weird taste to me. I am mildly addicted to chocolate brownies, snickers and reeses, that's about as far as I go. LOL!

love milk chocolate hate dark

My theory on dessert: if it's not chocolate, it's not worth it. I can't wrap my mind around the idea that someone does not like chocolate.

Not a fan of milk chocolate, but will happily eat Dark.
DH does not like chocolate at all.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Finally! I am not alone! When people find out I hate chocolate it causes this huge uproar. "You hate CHOCOLATE" they always gasp. "Why??!" Ugh, the conversation then proceeds with me explaining why and then one of three scenarios plays out. 1) I wish I hated chocolate. 2) You're weird. 3) When was the last time you had it? You should try it again. You should try _______ brand of chocolate I bet you'd like it. I'll bring you some chocolate everyone likes.

BAH HUMBUG I say.

I'm so happy someone says this!
I was actually tempted to start this thread but was swayed by the fear of being scrutinized by all my SeriousFriends?

In the office I get poked-fun at because I don't like chocolate or ice cream.
My director will yell loudly "WHO ELSE HERE DOESN'T LIKE CHOCOLATE?" then look at me and say "see Christel, you're weird!". @Martini Me - I get the other responses too [all of them].

But HEY! s'all-good. I'll have a butterfinger once a month (you know what I mean girls) when it calls my name but other than that? no thanks.

@ hungrychristel - I'm glad I'm not alone, I too get the over the top responses like your director trying to publicly shame me. I find myself trying not to mention my dislike of chocolate if at all possible just to avoid these situations :)

Yep, I hate it too... thankfully I don't have a sweet tooth though, so I don't suffer.

I can tolerate it, if I have to, but like a couple of other people said, the darker the chocolate, the more I dislike it.

I have never liked chocolate, don't crave it, never think about it, and always steer clear of it if offered for dessert. Eating or drinking anything with chocolate in it never enters my thought process. I don't understand people who like it. I guess I'm un-American because I can't stand
pumpkin pie, apple pie, licorice, root beer, or liver. Chocolate is at the top of that list however. We all have likes and dislikes and shouldn't be judged by what we don't like. I have a friend who detests spaghetti and mashed potatoes. I don't judge her for it. That's what makes us unique as individuals. Give me a dessert with lemon, strawberries or a lot of vanilla, and I'm in seventh heaven!

Oh I am with you on this! I cannot stand chocolate! The smell makes me want to retch, I think it smells like dirty socks. The taste is an abomination! Trust me if I ever find a Genie to grant me wishes, I'm totally asking him to eradicate the public nuisance that is chocolate.

I'll only eat dark chocolate. I like to think its a texture thing as well as having a flavor and aroma as complex and interesting as coffee or wine.

And we know how people can love their coffee or wine.

I hate milk chocolate anything.

I don't hate chocolate, but neither do I love or crave it. Not much of a sweet tooth, I guess.

Someone told me once that people either have a salt or sweet preference that was inherently genetic. I don't know if that is true, but I'd definitely hit the salty stuff before the sweet stuff. Whatever.

A couple times a year after a dinner party, I have to go online and find the other chocolate haters. I try to be conveniently be away from the table when dessert (invariably chocolate) is served. Yet, they hunt me down and try to force it on me. Finally, I relent. "Really, I'll pass. I don't like chocolate." "YOU DON'T LIKE CHOCOLATE?!" And then everyone starts talking about chocolate! For me, it's like they are talking about eating slugs. I despise chocolate. I find myself getting more and more sick to my stomach. It IS curious to me that there are people (lots of them) who love chocolate, and sometimes I kind of wish I could have that orgasmic chocolate experience that people talk about. But then the chocolate..slugs ..chocolate...slugs...bleech part of my brain takes over and I nix that wish.
