I add _____ to my oatmeal cookies
Coming up on March 18th is National Oatmeal Cookie Day--yay! What are your favorite add-ins? Dried fruits like dates (my favorite), apricots, dried cherries or big soft raisins? Nuts...maybe walnuts, pecans & I've eaten ones with pistachio nuts, too. Coconut? Spices? Chocolate chunks? Do you have a passed thru generations killer oatmeal cookie recipe or just use the one on the back of the Quaker box?

JEP - you are a mind reader! This weekend I made "kitchen sink" oatmeal cookies, with chocolate chips, raisins and walnuts. I wanted to add coconut but my husband protested. Check them out here:

The pic is a little blurry... I'm a better baker than I am a photographer! :)
I also make them sometimes with dark chocolate chunks, dried cherries and pecans, or with chopped dried apricots and almonds.

I love dried cranberries or cherries with walnuts

Craisins - Walnuts. Sometimes dried cherries. Oatmeal is probably my most favorite non-Christmas cooky.

I'm generally a purist. Rolled oats (not quick) and raisins only, thanks. No nuts. No chocolate. No nada.
My dad used to insist on putting chocolate chips in about every other batch of his oatmeal cookies when I was a kid, and I hated them. Refused to eat them. Was never a big fan of chocolate chip cookies anyway (flame away), but it was twice as bad to ruin a perfectly wonderful oatmeal cookie (my fave in those days) by adding chocolate. Plus, he still put cinnamon in there, and I really didn't like the cinnamon chocolate combo. Yes, I tended toward being an annoying child.
That said, I did make a batch of the CI Chocolate-Chunk Oatmeal Cookies with Dried Cherries for my husband yesterday (many thanks to those who helped me out with this). It was only the second time I've made them, and I must admit, they are quite tasty.
Nevertheless, I'm still happiest with just raisins. I hardly ever eat oatmeal in any form (not agreeable with the IBS), but when I do, a traditional cookie is mighty fine.

Like Malenky, dried cranberries or cherries.

No raisins....just plain oatmeal cookies....with chocolate frosting in between two cookies. OMgosh..heaven!
jcrisco at 12:49PM on 03/03/08
The barest hint of cinnamon and toasted pecan pieces. Toasting the nuts first makes a huge difference in the texture and taste!

Yellow raisins and butterscotch chips. They make scotchies tasty and not too sweet!
Also, I always use the super-duper Vietnamese extra-fancy extra-strength cinnamon from Penzey's when baking these. I use about 1/2 of the cinnamon that the recipe calls for, and it creates a fantastic cinnamony aroma with not too much bite.

Thanks for sharing how you create your perfect oatmeal cookie.
btw---don't OC usually trigger the thought..ah, now that's a healthier cookie---yes, I will take a second one--ha!
OC make fantastic ice cream sandwiches, too! Bakery made--any good ones out there?

My friend Robert makes the BEST oatmeal cookies in the world- with dates, coconut, and walnuts. They're now my favorite cookies and I don't even like dates, and you can't actually taste the coconut- it's like they sort of melt in somehow. Amazing! Here's the recipe: http://offthemeathook.com/2007/12/16/roberts-chewy-amazing-oatmeal-date-cookies.aspx

The best thing about oatmeal cookies is that they're so adaptable and don't need a set recipe. I add whatever I have on hand to mine--usually toasted nuts, dried cranberries (or any sort of chopped dried fruit), cinnamon, nutmeg, orange rind, etc.

Because my father loves them so much, we actually call them "Dad's cookies". They are just oatmeal cookeis, made to the recipe on the Quaker Oats canister, and we add Hershey's Raspberry Chocolate chips to them (they are apparently a seasonal item, so we have to stock up on them for him, so that they last throughout the year).
I, on the other hand, love them with any sort of nuts added, or figs or dates. Yum!

@CookiePie---thanks for sharing your playin' around ways for "kitchen sink" cookies. Endless possiblities:)
@karenita...OMG, by your description & recipe, that may very well be the best OC for me...dates, walnuts & coconut chewy--yum.
JEP at 6:13PM on 03/03/08
Nicole over on Baking Bites blog posted an oatmeal cookie pie recipe with a honey cream cheese filling--yum. Did you use to buy these Little Debbie-type cookies? Ever make a similiar oatmeal sandwich cookie?

I think the only time an oatmeal cookie is worth eating is if it includes walnuts and chocolate chips. Other than that, I usually dislike them. I don't care how good they look, if they're regular old oatmeal cookies filled with rasins, I want nothint o do with them.
