Does Topping Order Matter?
I'm convinced the order my toppings are layered on my sandwich influences my sandwich consumption experience.
I personally have a particular affinity for my cheese to between the slices of meat and the dressing to be spread on the top slice of bread. Sometimes things vary depending on what ingredients are included in the sandwich, but under no circumstances may the cheese come in contact w/ the vegetable or dressing nor may the vegetable w/ the dressing.
Does anyone else find themselves w/ sandwich topping order peculiarities?

I'm a bit like that. Depending what's on the sandwich, I'm weird about the mustard. It should touch the meat or cheese. It may also be in contact with onions or pickles. I do not like my mustard touching my lettuce.
If there's mayo involved, I prefer that it be in contact with tomatoes. Lettuce contact is fine, too, assuming there aren't any tomatoes.
If it's meatloaf, the mayo touches the meat, because that's all I eat on my meatloaf sandwich.
If it's got avocado, there can be no mayo or mustard (or other condiments), and I want the avocado on the bread. Ideally, it will be in contact with tomato or onion on the other side, but I'm less fussy about that.

I've noticed that where you put the mayo-- top or bottom bread-- has an effect on how moist the sandwich seems. When it's on the top, I get more of a sense of moisture; conversely, when on the bottom slice the mayo seems to get lost in the shuffle of other ingredients. Curious.

If I'm grilling it, the only condiment a sandwich can have is grated horseradish, or the sandwich is soggy. The cheese has to be next to the bread, on the outside of the meat or any other fillings, so it melts the best, and the sandwich has to be grilled very slowly, and uncovered, so the bread crisps up but doesn't burn while the cheese melts and the meat and dressing warm through.
On most toasted sandwiches, i like a thin layer of mayo and/or mustard and salt and pepper on both peices of bread, then the onions on one side, the lettuce on the other, cheese on both sides, then the meat in the middle.
Sliced chicken or turkey sandwiches, or rare-ONLY roast beef are mayo/salt/pepper only on both outsides, then lettuce/onions on both sides, and extra mayo and meat in the middle. NO CHEESE EVER on turkey or chicken or roast beef (which is weird, since i eat cheese on EVERYTHING).
I never put tomatoes on a sandwich because it makes them soggy UNLESS it's a fresh-out -of-the-garden tomato sandwich, then it's mayo, salt and lots of freshcracked pepper ONLY, with a thick slice of tomato, still warm from the sun, in the middle, and it's the only sandwich i use white bread only on. Lettuce and onion are ok here, but optional.
A million years ago, my first job was at McDonalds. Their training manual stated that the mustard went on the bread first, so it was farthest away from the meat, because it made it bitter. I still do that, out of habit.
People are weird, aren't they?

I like my condiment next to the meat, with s&p on the meat. I hate shredded lettuce, has to be leaf.
All meat must be thinly sliced, almost shaved, if it is lunchmeat. I hate when you get a sandwich and it is two thick slices of lunchmeat. Blech.

Ditto on the mayo thing - I hate it when the sandwiches I order literally seem to be wet and then I open them up to discover the heaping glops of the stuff. Ick.
For PB+J - to keep it from getting soggy (I'm thinking school day sandwiches), apply PB to both slices and then spread jam in between the two pb-ed slices. Ditto for honey.

Lol! My sandwich goes like this: Plain bread on bottom, then cheese, then meat, followed by any veg, followed by the mayo or mustard on top bread slice. If the cheese touches the mayo ro mustard it's a ruined sandwich. The ultimate eating experience is when the lettuce is shredded and you use a squeeze bottle to really get the mayo into the lettuce.

I hate shredded lettuce too! I actually prefer spinach to lettuce on sandwiches if it is available. Lettuce is very watery. Order is not that important to me, but it amuses me that I put condiments on the bread on most sandwiches, but on burgers, the condiments usually go on the meat.

I hadn't really thought about it, but........hmmmmmmmm............
On meat and cheese sandwiches, I like both slices of bread or halves of buns spread with a little mayo and topped with a little brown mustard. A kosher pickle slice can go anywhere in this meat and cheese concoction. I don't want mustard touching the cheese so that has to go in the middle which is fine because I prefer more meat than cheese, and only 1 slice of cheese. This is unless there is the rare perfect tomato which cannot touch mustard either, so that portion of bread or bun is mayo only and a little thicker. I love crispy lettuce and that also has to touch mayo only. Mustard can only touch meat, that's just how it has to be. I only want shredded lettuce on a taco. Don't even get me started on the order that has to be.

I have only one rule: the mayo cannot touch the cheese. Ugh--that drives me nuts! When the two are together, they create a creamy synergy that overpowers the flavor and texture of everything else in the sandwich.

No mayo or tomato unless the sandwich will be eaten right away (to prevent sogginess). If they are there they have to be next to each other and freshly ground black pepper goes on the tomato.

1. Slice of bread
2. Meats (if there are multiple types then I vary them, ie: turkey chicken)
3. cheese
4. Another layer of meats
5. Tomato
6. Lettuce (leaf lettuce that i've ripped into bite sized pieces, but not shredded)
7. Salt and pepper
8. A little olive oil
9. Slice of bread...then I cut it in half (always)

I really can't stand it when a deli will put the lettuce and tomato on the bottom of the sandwich, under the meat and cheese. The purpose of the lettuce and tomato should be to help keep it from being too dry so you bite into the bread and then get lettuce, tomato (maybe cheese before that) and then the meat.
And to the person who eats a meatloaf sandwich w/ mayo. I have two words for you: Paula Dean. Blech!

tomato/lettuce should be on TOP, never on the bottom of the main ingredient in the sandwich
I like my mayo to touch the veggies, rather than the cheese
mustard should touch the cheese or "veggie meat" not the lettuce/tomato

Haha, not gonna lie, you sound a bit obsessive compulsive. BUT I do have to say, I could see where it would make a difference. It's whatever you want to hit your mouth first! I've never been particular though and still seem to enjoy my sandwiches.

tomatoes cant touch the bread, hate the feeling of bread + tomato on my teeth... must have a layer of lettuce, then cheese, then tomato, then meat or whatever else is on the sandwhich.

My dad had a deli for almost 40 years, and sold thousands of hero sandwiches. He was convinced that the order was the key to the taste. If he wanted to amplify a flavor he'd put it nearer the tongue. That is to say nearer the lower half of the hero.
