Seviche is wonderful. The calamari is excellent. I also really like Asiatique.

Jack Fry's for updated Southern
The Patron for locally-produced ingredients
De La Torre's for tapas
Primo for Italian
There are also the standards, like Morton's or Ruth's Chris, which are expensive (especially Morton's), but very reliable and not overly fancy. They're good birthday dinner venues.
