Copying a good idea - Will be in Philadelphia next week

I'll be in Philadelphia next week, from cheesesteaks to italian delis, what do you recommend?

16 Comments:

Wow! The cheesesteak debate in Philadelphia gets pretty animated! There are many to choose from and many Italian delis to choose from. I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia. There are regular debates on Chowhound on these subjects. Have you taken a look? For fear of any Philadelphian weighing in.............I am keeping quiet on this!!

Philadelphia Magazine does a "Best of Philly" every year. The following link will take you to whatever type and price of cuisine you'd like - in the city and the suburbs. Really easy to navigate and you can't go wrong with any of their recommendations. Enjoy your visit!

@Perky - You Da Bomb!!

@crazyspice.......I'm blushing. ;-)

Ginos, Italian Market, Federal Pretzel and pick up some tastykakes at the Wawa.

Pat's Steaks, or any mom & pop store in various parts of the city...other than Pat's & Geno's, Center City cheesesteaks suck IMO. Maybe if you get out to University City, you might have some luck.

If you'd like a cafe breakfast or lunch, try Blue in Green, in The White Building on 105 S. 12th Street. It used to be on Jeweler's Row (Sansom Street) and had great breakfast latkes. Haven't been there since it moved, but the owner is known to be a maven baker.

Enjoy Philly! I used to live near Villanova, PA (on the Main Line).

I get down to Philly about once every 3 months or so. The last stop before heading out of town is always, without fail, brunch at Creperie Beaumonde. I've considered moving just so I could have brunch there every Sunday.

Monk's or Eulogy, for bars. Both specialized in Belgian-style food and beer, have great menus, and longer beer lists. Personally, I'm partial to Eulogy, but I know plenty of people who enjoy Monk's.

Ralph's Restaurant for Italian: http://www.ralphsrestaurant.com/
(the meatballs will blow your mind; the recipe is on their site)

Tony Luke's for cheesesteaks: http://www.tonylukes.com/

@NorthernBBQer - I am trying to stay out of this particular debate! There was quite the lively one on CH. BUT, you are SO on the money here. ;-D

Do try a stop at the Reading Terminal Market, and Hi end- Susanna Foo's

The White Dog Cafe in University City and Fork in Old City. Bangin' food.

Pat's or Gino's for cheesesteaks.

Reading Terminal Market or Di Bruno Brother's for shopping.

Morning Glory Diner or Creperie Beaumonde for breakfast.

Buddhakan (or any Steven Starr restaurant for that matter) for high end.

I second the Reading Terminal market! The amish ladies make an AMAZING Pennsylvania Dutch chicken & dumplings (think thick country egg noodles) Even if you don't eat there it's great just to browse all of the vendors, cheese shops, meat shops, etc

Steve's Prince of Steaks up in the Northeast for cheesteaks,
Zorba's for amazing no frills Greek in the Fairmount section, right down the street from Eastern State where it is rumored Willie Sutton escaped from and went down the street to The London Grill for a pint while waiting to be re-arrested!
Wherever you go, it's Philly and it's hard to go wrong!Enjoy

@ALL - SHOUTING HERE!!!!!!! It is GENOS!!!!!!! NOT GINOS!!!!!!!

Thank you.............. If you have actually been there, you would KNOW that!!!
